The Loyal Servant: A Very British Political Thriller (Angela Tate Investigations - Book 1)
Price: £1.59

4.0 out of 5 stars Politics for those with a conscience?, 6 April 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A tale about someone who finds matters are not as they should be, and where honesty is slipping. What do you do when wrong things happen and you are able to expose them? An honest description, with a main character who addresses her conscience and authority with courage and honesty. A good read.

Jeeves and the Yule-tide Spirit

4.0 out of 5 stars jeeves again., 6 April 2014

Yet another pleasant uncomplicated story of the inimitable Jeeves and Wooster. Yet another example of dithering, amiable buffoonery and gentle wit combining to immerse the reader in the comfortable warmth of a good story well written. If you have never read Wodehouse, please do: if you have not, please give it a try, as you will be glad.

4.0 out of 5 stars History and adventure make the mark., 6 April 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A story that moves across countries and covers a heap of history, archaeology and legend with admirable ease. If nothing else, use it as a source of interesting factoids from history. The heroine is gutsy and unafraid, erudite and knowledgeable, the storyline quite plausible and fast moving. Read and enjoy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Bruno does it again., 6 April 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Treachery (Kindle Edition)
The heretic Bruno finds himself deep in intrigue and murder, rubbing shoulders with famous historical characters and the unrecorded poor, endeavouring with his usual perspicacity and self-doubt to solve a mystery with a deadline. Realistic in feeling and historical background, this series goes from strength to strength.

4.0 out of 5 stars a good companion to classics, 1 Jan 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
If you wanted to appear erudite when Classical mythology was mentioned, or felt embarrassed when Classical references were made in any literary form and you failed to pick it up, this is the work which should help you do better next time! Not an exciting opus, but a tremendously useful addition to your library.

Twas the Night before Christmas A Visit from St. Nicholas
Price: £0.00

4.0 out of 5 stars a need to remember classic, 1 Jan 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
If you have never read this, you need to, if only to find the names of Santa's reindeer. Not a work of poetic brilliance, but an indication of what seems an iconic perception for American Christmases past present and future.

Le Fantôme de l'Opéra (French Edition)
Le Fantôme de l'Opéra (French Edition)
Price: £0.00

4.0 out of 5 stars Dark mystery, 26 Jun 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The tale in the original language which inspired the musical and films. Leroux tells his dark story gradually, describing a realistic Parisian theatre background, based on the true Opera, then expanding our view to take in the eerie events in the depths of the theatre. The figure of the Phantom takes on solidity as the tale develops, and we begin to feel the attachment and the dread which the heroine of the piece feels for the starnge and vengeful character. This is a story well described and worth a read in French.

The Man with Two Left Feet And Other Stories
The Man with Two Left Feet And Other Stories

4.0 out of 5 stars gentle humour, eloquently delivered., 26 Jun 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Mr. Wodehouse at his gentle best, languidly telling stories of chance and opportunity which gently draw the reader into his world. He attracts with calm, wry and witty observations which raise a smile or even a small chuckle, and the storylines make sense as a whole despite some unlikely beginnings. Wodehouse depicts situations from a bygone era, yet they still have an effect on modern humour spots. Read and enjoy.

A Short History of H.M.S. Victory
A Short History of H.M.S. Victory
Price: £0.00

3.0 out of 5 stars A good ship's life, 27 May 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This short book does what it intended; it details the life of Nelson's last command from before his arrival on the stage unti its decommissioning as the Navy's command ship in Portsmouth. Much of this peiod covers the time when Britannia seemed to rule most of the waves, and the author wraps both histories together quite efficiently. He does not question much, but the story reads well. At the history's close, he becomes the prophet of what is to be, for he desired the Victory to become a museum and example at a time when she was fading fast. Not a great book, but a useful footnote to a time of British effort and success at sea.
