Dealer's Choice (Modern Classics)
Dealer's Choice (Modern Classics)
by Patrick Marber
Edition: Paperback
Price: £9.69

3.0 out of 5 stars Probably about to get a dusting down, 22 April 2014
With gambling all the rage in Cameron's Britain, Dealers Choice is probably going to get programmed any time soon. I saw a second run production at The Yorkshire Playhouse, with, bizarrely, the bloke from Humphrey's House (or some such kids' TV show) in the lead. He was very good though the play is a little bit short on atmosphere - don't know what a good director could do with it but with the parlous state of theatre at the moment I guess it will turned into a musical.

5.0 out of 5 stars Eulogy For Nicholson, 20 April 2014
This review is from: About Schmidt [DVD] [2003] (DVD)
Jack's been in my life longer than most of my girlfriends (and that's Jack's dialogue) - I wrote a 5000 word essay on The Shining - sold by his wicked personality. Film stars are always of their generation - and Jack has been a leader of his.

2.0 out of 5 stars Preppy Nonsense, 20 April 2014
Overprivileged kids in public school fight the system courtesy of Robin Williams - all in Gucci loafers and Burberry mackintoshes.

Edition: Paperback

3.0 out of 5 stars As A Bona Fide Lunatic, 14 April 2014
As a bona fide lunatic myself I found this very interesting - Jerry, the lunatic who put his head against electricity meters to hear the hum. It's nearly as bad as turning the lights off on your dashboard as it makes the road ahead clearer.

3.0 out of 5 stars Beatles Influence, 13 April 2014
There's a definite Beatles influence here - rhythm is definitely Merseyside. The satire is spot on, and I'm sure it sold loads. Miss Halliwell should sing from her throat instead of her haircut.

The Secret Agent: A Simple Tale (Penguin Classics)
The Secret Agent: A Simple Tale (Penguin Classics)
by Joseph Conrad
Edition: Paperback
Price: £6.39

5.0 out of 5 stars Blew me away, 6 April 2014
In this age of state-sponsored terrorism, Joseph Conrad delves deeper and contextualises turn of the century England to pinpoint the forces at work and the antagonists who perpetrate the crime. Bildungsroman. The characters are beautifully drawn and if this book was in smellyvision they would be crawling off the page: Mr. Adolf Verloc, whose "good nature" inspires his indolence, so that the only thing he can be is a spy.

The plot rattles along at a cracking pace - that's not to say it's a cut and paste job like - say - Wilbur Smith - but woven into scenes with real people who are as tangible in 21st century Britain as they were in 19th Century Britain. There is light here too; gentle passages of comedy and black humour as the inevitable moves towards it's conclusion. I really enjoyed it.

It's a great book that carries you away into another world. It's very sad too as lives unravel and perpetrators go unpunished. A must.

Cart And Cwidder (Dalemark Quartet)
Cart And Cwidder (Dalemark Quartet)
by Diana Wynne Jones
Edition: Paperback

3.0 out of 5 stars A Change Of Direction for the Late Great Ms. Wynne Jones, 5 April 2014
After the populist books of Eight Days of Luke and The Ogre Downstairs, Wynne Jones moved up a notch into fantasy.

As with all works of art, some people, who wanted more of the same populist drama, were left behind (me included).

Cart And Cwidder makes more demands of it's readers and can be a bit miasmic - if you buy into this sort of thing you'll probably end up as a contracts lawyer!

3.0 out of 5 stars Lights, camera, inaction, 3 April 2014
This review is from: Lourdes [DVD] (DVD)
I'm not expecting Yamaha 750 trials bike to burst through the scenery and spray its muck everywhere but a little bit of plot would have gone a long way. Including actualite from a mass in a fiction film is not a cinematic move. One for the media studies groups only.

Jean-Luc Godard (French Film Directors)
Jean-Luc Godard (French Film Directors)
by Douglas Morrey
Edition: Paperback
Price: £14.99

4.0 out of 5 stars Contextual, 2 April 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Context is everything in cinema and this book - celebrating the world's most popular living film director - is not short of it.

Jean Luc Godard comes across as a stimulating artist and it is nice to see some of his more difficult films opened out into print.
