I was hoping to see some stocking tops in this French film but was disheartened. The background tended to upstage the actors a little bit. Perhaps it was all a little too much for Zonka; who would probably have preferred a studio film to this flimsy tale.

Documentary style story of the Vietnam war and the tragedies that befell the soldiers. Not a pretty story and sickening in its depiction of fighting and consequences.

I really like this as it's weaning me off rock music and into classical. Rachmaninov is too hard, Schumman too loud and this is just right!

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic Gold, 13 Nov 2013
This review is from: Out of Time (Audio CD)
Have started with a cliche as, in this, case it is true. I was introduced to REM by a friend at University after I asked him what it was like, post radio-saturation. He was right, it is a solid gold classic: great lyrics, fabulous musicianship.

I smiled when they split up but could find no real satisfaction in it; their legacy will grow and grow until they are playing for retired Presidents.

Interesting book on mental illness - namely anorexia. Parker pinpoints the mechanisms by which people get ill. It's an interesting book and an Amazon review doesn't do it justice; however, the problem is shown that no one listens to young people, and they get ill (especially the girls).

Perhaps, if twenty-first century Britain did more listening and less talking, then the world would be a happpier place (as evinced by this book).

The Vodi
The Vodi
by John Braine
Edition: Hardcover

3.0 out of 5 stars Still, 8 Nov 2013
This review is from: The Vodi (Hardcover)
The Vodi is an odd, still, book. There are motifs of its time: sadistic boys school, heavenly nurses, Gods and Monsters; but The Vodi takes a turn down Civvy street and reports of a young man man back from the war, who attempts to blend back into society.

There is a feeling of detachment in the book and a sort of wandering, lost, quality.

As one character puts it: "there is a surplus of men."

Britain certainly lost the peace after WW2 and The Vodi goes some way in explaining that.

Puke inducing brilliance from Anna Burns. Very much how the other half live, the wrong half. With female protagonists this is a woman's book that all women should be reading. Fay Weldon never looked so tame.

Even to a cloth-eared rock fan like me, this music sounds sublime: Mark Elder, leading the E.N.O., Rosalind Plowright, Craig Charles and Neil Howlett et al make a glorious noise.

It is all under the direction of Dr. Johnathan Miller - there won't be many like him when he's gone.

Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret (1981)
Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret (1981)

5.0 out of 5 stars Growling Satire, 4 Nov 2013
Released thirty three years' ago,Non-Stop Erotic Caberet was aimed squarely at young men and women but still resonates at 2014.

It kicks off with growling satire of Frustration, followed by the global smash Tainted Love. The London theme of the album is etched beautifully in the blue films of Sleazy City and how they make them in Sex Dwarf.

A paen to finding love in a corrupt town where money rules and women suffer.

Really enjoying the album. Good words, sung well with plenty of soul. Wales is obviously a bit downtrodden if Not Accepted Anywhere is anything to go by.

A friend of mine from the Royal Academy of Music said recently most rock musicians are: "monkeys with guitars." Listening to The Automatic - go go the monkeys!!!!!!!
