1.0 out of 5 stars Only For Keener Fans Of This Comedy Pairing, 25 Aug 2012
Fairly typical of British films which seek to capitalise on the current trend in popular home-grown sitcom stars, it is very weak indeed but still capable of squeezing a few quid from the loyal fans. To a non-fan, however, the script is poor, the story could have been written by a group of naughty schoolboys, the stars are pretty unconvincing and the meagre budget is all too obvious. That said, it's not entirely bad as there are actually a few good jokes in there but too few to save it from failing as a comedy. This film's one big achievement is the truly amazing feat of boring me to sleep during a seemingly endless display of half naked, attractive young women - I just about managed to struggle through it over two sittings.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Good Effort But Not Outstanding, 23 Aug 2012
This review is from: Ambush [DVD] (DVD)
This is a worthy enough snapshot of a part of WW2 that is probably little known outside Finland and as such will be of some specific interest to Finns and students of military history (such as I) particularly with regard to the authentic equipment in use. On closer inspection, however, this is a fairly routine war story exploring fairly common themes - which is understandable because certain themes are common to most if not all wars but aside from the setting and the nationalities involved there really is very little to distinguish this from a hundred other worthy war films. In conclusion, while not without interest it is also not outstanding.

2.0 out of 5 stars Slight Improvement On Clash ..., 23 Aug 2012
This film suffers from all the same faults as "Clash" - ie bad script, wooden acting, too much reliance on effects but because it seems somehow less self-conscious of being a big, brash, pseudo-mythological action affair with all the aforementioned flaws it succeeds in being generally easier to watch and more forgivable - the result is a movie that is a little more entertaining and a little less annoying than its forerunner.

1.0 out of 5 stars Bad Doggy ..., 11 Jun 2012
This Spoof version of the classic Sherlock Holmes story has a strong cast of well-knowns and is completely devoid of laughs despite trying very, VERY hard in its pursuit of comedy. A spoof film with a heavyweight cast and zero laughs is inevitably just tiresomely self indulgent - tiresome indeed.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not 'avin' a larf ...., 18 May 2012
This review is from: Big Fat Gypsy Gangster [DVD] (DVD)
For a film of this type to work it must have laughs in abundance and it must have characters who are likeable despite their plot driving flaws. This has neither of those qualities so all we are left with is an unfunny movie which glorifies all the low and nasty things and offers nothing to wash away the unpleasant taste of it all. Not 'avin' a larf.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good quality and price, 13 May 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I came to these "super premium" FOTL t-shirts after trying the "heavy cotton" version from the same vendor and finding them not as heavy as I would prefer. These are a bit more like what I'm after - good quality, nice cut though still not as heavy as some American T-shirts in my inventory. The fit is tailored to comfortable so if you like them looser then go a size up. Generally recommended as good on quality and value given my earlier comments.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not Really Very "Heavy", 9 May 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I bought the white one which was delivered fairly quickly. It's a nice enough t-shirt and is well made and cut with decent ribbing around the neck and a nice bright white colour. The fit is tailored to comfortable so if you want it loose then go a size up. The problem is it's not really as heavy as I expected of a t-shirt described as "heavy cotton". Sure it's heavier than most of the tat that very often passes for t-shirts in the UK and which usually go out of shape after a couple of wearings but short of some of the genuinely heavy, built to last offerings I've acquired from the USA. I realise that the seller gives the respective fabric weights in the product description but that meant nothing to me until I had the t-shirt in my hands as a point of reference. Perhaps the coloured options will impress me more as they are described as being 10gms heavier.

Update June 2012 - See my review of the "Super Premium FOTL" version from the same seller.

Martin M170 Extra Light Acoustic Guitar Strings
Price: £3.99

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Tone, 9 April 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Like many thinner bodied electro-acoustics mine usually sounds better plugged in so that's the way I usually play it. The beautiful, warm, rich and balanced tone of these strings, however, makes it sing out like it's in love plugged in or not. There's a great smooth, professional feel to them and an unquantifiable "something" that inspires a relaxed confidence which makes me want to play more and more. At the asking price they've got to be a bargain as I keep thinking I've just traded my guitar in for a much more expensive one. Highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars More Than Nostalgia, 7 Mar 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is an eerily atmospheric folk horror/SciFi tale with a Nigel Kneale-esque feel which was originally screened for UK kids in an early evening slot. At the time it first appeared on TV I was myself a kid very much glued to the screen and more than occasionally a little scared - but that was when I was a kid ... So it was that I bought this DVD fully expecting my childish nostalgia to be burst like a child's party balloon. Pleasantly surprised was I to discover that it is still an effective, well structured story which mostly withstands the scrutiny of my jaded adult mind. I say "mostly" because the drama school histrionics of the child actors can be a little wearing at times as they jar you out of the trance-like state that the very capable Ian Cuthbertson, Gareth Thomas and Freddie Jones have drawn you into but generally it's a ripping yarn nicely told. In addition, the conversion to DVD is quite acceptable and the extra features, which feature a couple of decent interviews and a bit more, are worthwhile.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great First Season ... but ..., 29 Jan 2012
This season (Season One) of the series which ran for five seasons is very good. It is thought provoking, original and intriguing scifi with more than a hint of mystery to it. There are a few minor "silly sci-fi" moments to be found but gratifyingly few and, though it is not entirely well cast, most of the important characters ie Boone, Sandoval and Da'an are convincing. The problem is that Season One leaves many important questions unanswered and the remaining four seasons not only fail to answer those questions even remotely convincingly but are VERY poor in comparison ranging from quite bad to really awful by Season Five. So, if you are coming to this series now as a new viewer you should be aware that, though you may well enjoy this season, you will more than likely be very frustrated and disappointed by what comes after and may also conclude (as I have) that the makers actually never knew where it was going: a realisation which sheds a somewhat less favourable light on even this enjoyable first season.
