5.0 out of 5 stars Old School Epic!, 29 May 2014
This review is from: Waterloo [DVD] [1970] (DVD)
I have just watched this movie again for the first time in years (shame on me!)

I was left moved by Rod Steiger's portrayal of Bonaparte. How he portrayed him as (commonly assumed) an incredibly emotionally led individual. This personality then projecting itself on others, as well demonstrated by one of the soldiers sent to halt his return to France from exile in Elba just fainting in awe in his presence, & the rest of the accompanying troops & commanders on the beach switching allegiance. Awesome. Some of the other actors give a good show in this movie, but Mr. Steiger is the true star.

A nice little touch is when you are given an insight into the personal thoughts of Bonaparte & Wellington when a voiceover is provided whilst they look poignantly into the camera during moments of doubts. I'm sure that these things happen.

The actual production itself is genuinely HUGE. Awe inspiring to watch the masses of soldiers even marching on the screen in glorious 2.35:1...but the battle scenes and the mass formations of troops are awesome. When the camera pans across the screen whilst following Napoleon riding in front of his formations (via Wellington's spyglass) the sheer scale of the production becomes apparent. I believe that they used troops from the Soviet army to put the 'boots on the field' to achieve this massive, pre-CGI (& all the better for it) realism. Fair to say they don't make them like this anymore. However, the battle scenes are so well choreographed, you can really get carried away with it all & believe it may be real.

Awesome movie. Top drawer. 10/10. A+. Gold star. I'm sure you get the impression I really enjoy this one!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great non-CGI comic book, 20 May 2014
Great story. Good character introduction & back story. All done with no CGI effects, to the benefit & overall visual effect (i.e. les artificial) this has on the film.
As a result of the no CGI factor, I was especially impressed with the stunts! Very well choreographed & look fantastic!
I enjoy 'comic book' movies & this is one of the better ones. Not critically applauded, but what do they know.

4.0 out of 5 stars Red Army good source!, 17 Nov 2013
Glad to see that no-one has REALLY dissented from the basic purpose of this box-set. Alright, I know it is a Russian produced documentary series based upon the Great Patriotic War and all of the elements of the Red Army/ Navy/ Air Force elements involved in it....& I know that it was Russian produced, so I know that it is not completely unbiased....
HOWEVER, that apart, this series breaks down the various roles of the armed forces of Stalinist Russia & how they operated in WW2. The presentation is of good quality. The Russian presenter is backed up by a high quality of CGI background that represents the equipment/ vehicles used in the conflict while he is narrating. Beyond that, the CGI is used to good effect & quality when representing/ recreating the war. It is of a very good standard.
I know that some reviewers have been dissenting in their summaries with regard to the script not following the narration on certain parts of the series...true, but is IS a Russian series translated into English, & I know it is not perfect in this respect, but it really is not that bad. As a consequence, it is better to receive Russian TV translations to see their point of view, than a completely Western view without this facility. It provides more more 'balance'.
I thoroughly enjoyed this series, & even with it's aforementioned faults, definitely a solid 4 stars. Recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Guns n' Roses classic line up, in their pomp!, 19 Jan 2013
I originally saw this when a mate of mine (who had cable TV way back then!) recorded it & showed it to us, time & time again.
I had already seen the band in November 1987 & again in Donnington 1988 & was well caught up in the whole Gn'R whirlwind and excitement of the time. So, to me, this is always the classic line up. This was when the band were at their best, this was their TIME & this is the best live DVD I have seen of them to date (set & performances).
Professionally shot for TV & still 'intimate' in it's visual.
Guns n' Roses as they should be remembered & at the peak of their powers.

5.0 out of 5 stars TOP GUN, TOP GAME!, 28 Nov 2012
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Top Gun: Combat Zones (Video Game)
I do like shooting games & I do like flying games & I do (guilty pleasure) like the film TOP GUN!
However, apart from being able to fly an F14 Tomcat, that is about all this has in common with the movie.
Still, it has lots of varied levels. Lots of different planes to fly (some you have to earn!) & has many different types of mission & all to varied levels of challenge. Some were very difficult, but overall VERY addictive, I loved it & would heartily recommend it.
Great game. Buy it!

4.0 out of 5 stars Underrated WereWolf Legend!, 1 Dec 2011
This review is from: Skinwalkers [DVD] (2006) (DVD)
This was a cool movie! Well shot, interesting American Indian connection, conflict between good & evil politics & seriously (& wrongly in my opinion) shot to pieces by some reviewers. Good story line, too. Well worth a watch.

3.0 out of 5 stars BUILD UP to Barbarossa, 29 Sep 2011
The DVD covers the political build up to the launch of Operation Barbarossa.

The narrative philosophises about 'what ifs' like if the British had become involved in the Russo-Finnish war, etc. (i.e. would Barbarossa have even happened?), but when it eventually comes to the titanic conflict that decided WW2, there is little new.

As an avid history fan, I heard the (blatantly) plagiarised narrative, lifted directly from Olivier narrative from the (vastly superior) 'World At War' series. The producers are brazen enough to use huge tracts of this word for word! I know that the aforementioned series is world class & plagiarism is the greatest compliment, but this is just plain rude!

However, on a positive note, there was some film archive I had not yet seen previously. Additionally, it was very cheap!

2.0 out of 5 stars Sooooooooo Disappointed!!!, 28 Aug 2011
I LOVE Anna Friel, I LOVE the legend of Bathory, so I was so looking forward to watching this.
However, after initially watching the documentaries on the DVD, I realised that this may be a bit different to the sexy vampire, gore fest that I was anticipating...& indeed it was.
The film was a very protracted & drawn out & (according to the director from the making of documentary) still a hypothetical take on the legend of Bathory...& ended up a much more boring one than if it had followed the traditional take on the life of the lady in question.
Instead of a good horror movie (for which the subject matter would have been excellent) the film became a very subjective slant on how Bathory had been framed by power hungry politicians & served to suggest that the whole bathing in blood/ murderess/ vampire mythology was, not even just exaggerated, but entirely made up! Even if most of it was untrue, by the director's own admission, this was also unsubstantiated. The end result made for a very long, very boring movie, with little to save it (except for the stunning Anna Friel, couple of good battle scenes & some of the architecture in the localities of the shoot...all of which would have been better used lending themselves in a more traditional take on the Bathory legend).
For the DVD cover to proclaim 'Countess Of Blood' & 'Vampire' and then to contain teh film that it does is, at least, very misleading. VERY disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Staw Wars shooter sublime!, 22 Aug 2011
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
I had heard that this game had been well reviewed, so expectations were high. However, it did not dissapoint in the slightest.

A fine example of the console shooter genre. Pretty simple in it's purpose & what it tries to deliver. There is a SLIGHT (very) nod to strategy in the way that you can command your squad members in battle, but basically it is straight ahead blaster.

So what makes it so good? Well, EXCELLENT graphics (just about as good as I have seen on the original X-Box), sublime control system (noticed the difference when played the (still great) Star Wars Battlefront & (still good) Star Wars Jedi Academy afterwards), great attention to detail re the Star Wars context. Plus excellent cut scenes & great lighting effects (including types of vision you can choose to use in certain environments) lead to brilliant atmosphere.

A real 'adrenalin rush' type of a game, giving you a challenge whilst not being frustrating or impossible. Always bringing you back for 'one more go'! Even the open end finale of the game made me hope (momentarily) that there may be a sequel on the way...then I realised that this game was a good few years old now! Still, if anyone at Lucas Arts is reading, I have a PS3 now & would love a sequel to this on that console...

Highly recommended. A really quality item!
