4.0 out of 5 stars Decent budget earbuds, 10 Jun. 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I had seen enough good reviews (on Amazon and elsewhere) to take a chance on these budget bluetooth headphones. They function well so far.

Pros:
- low cost
- simple setup / operation
- good battery life

Cons:
- not the best fit for my ears

The shape / design of the earpieces meant that I had trouble getting the business end of the earbud far enough in to my ear, so the sound tends to lose its bass end, for which you need a good seal with the soft rubber tip. Oh well, you're never going to know how that will work out without actually trying a pair - they might suit your head just fine.

The built-in ear hooks hold things in place well, even when running.

Battery life is quoted around 4-5 hours and this seems about right. I mostly use them for running, so I only need them for up to an hour at a time, but get several trips in before they need charging.

I had trouble with my first set, but customer support got in touch and offered a replacement set, no questions asked. Good service.

No Mercy
No Mercy
by Colin Forbes
Edition: Paperback

2.0 out of 5 stars No Mercy? No Editing!, 29 Nov. 2010
This review is from: No Mercy (Paperback)
I was talked into reading this book by a colleague, partly because the author is my namesake, and partly out of curiosity to test his assertion that this is the worst novel he has ever read.

So - worst novel ever? Well, no - although it certainly has many flaws. The dialogue is strangely stilted, which gives Tweed and his colleagues an unbelievable quality from the outset. Nobody talks like that in real life. In addition, there seems to be little logical reasoning taking Tweed from one encounter to the next. He drives from one place to the next, seemingly at random, along roads which are named and described in tedious detail, to visit suspects who fail to answer his questions. He nevertheless deduces the reason for several grizzly deaths and averts a major terrorist incident.

It also struck me as odd that while Tweed and his colleagues are part of the official Intelligence Services of this country (and Tweed himself is on speaking terms with the Prime Minister) they don't always act as though they are on the side of the law. Having killed a man (in self defence) they don't have the body sent anywhere for official identification and disposal - they throw it down a drain to hide it! There are more examples, but I wouldn't want to spoil the end of the book for anyone.

Despite all these flaws I actually quite enjoyed reading this, if only for the fun of discussing the contradictions and unlikeliness of it all with others who have been subjected to it! As a casual read, and with forewarning of its shortcomings, it's really no worse than Dan Brown, for example.

The whole book has the feel of something that has not received any editing, but been rushed to the printer instead, knowing that there was an existing audience who would buy it regardless.

So, not a ringing endorsement of the book, but in terms of "so bad that it's good" you might just enjoy it.

4.0 out of 5 stars A cracking series, 11 Jun. 2010
I'm loving this series of books. The fourth and this, the fifth, volumes have been real page turners.

The book does end on something of a cliff-hanger - but the sixth and, for the time being, final book is now published so I'll be investing in that very shortly.

One interesting thing about reading this series is the divided loyalties you feel as a reader. There's not exactly a clear 'good' or 'bad' side of the unfolding events, so you can end up rooting for a group of people who are actually terrorists and drug-traffickers!

Anyway, it's a fun book, not to be taken too seriously, but well worth a read.

The Merchants' War (Merchant Princes)
The Merchants' War (Merchant Princes)
by Charles Stross
Edition: Mass Market Paperback
Price: £6.99

4.0 out of 5 stars Best in the series so far, 24 May 2010
Probably my favourite volume of this series so far. The pace of the story-telling is just right and kept me turning the pages compulsively, right into a major cliffhanger!

In previous books, I've found it a little hard to follow the political intrigue amongst the Clan factions, and it had been 18 months since I read the third book so I was slightly apprehensive about picking the story up again. However, with just a little re-capping I found the story easy to get in to.

While moving Miriam's story forward (a little) Charles Stross has brought a few new elements to the broader plot and I'm looking forward to seeing how things go in the next book. There's even a hint of science fictional elements to come (won't say any more than that!) but then travelling between parallel earths is the central theme of the books, so perhaps that's not really so new after all?

As mentioned in almost every review here, this is very much one part of a series - you must read the first three books before tackling this one and be aware that there are two more to follow!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great entry-level camera, 12 May 2010
I recently purchased this camera for my son, as his first 'proper' digital camera and we've been very happy with it. The bundle here (with case and rechargeable batteries) gives you almost everything you need to get started - you will need to invest in an SD card too.

The screen is bright and clear and the quality of the resulting pictures is more than good enough for displaying on computers or digital picture frames and for making prints. Physically, the unit is compact and pretty light-weight, so easy to take with you.

The 3x zoom is perhaps the most limiting factor to any more serious user, but this is a great buy for capturing simple snaps of your friends and the places you visit to share afterwards.

Nintendo DS-LITE Replacement Battery - Double Capacity 1600mAh
Nintendo DS-LITE Replacement Battery - Double Capacity 1600mAh

Price: £0.99

4.0 out of 5 stars Great value replacement battery, 4 May 2010
For a very minimal fee, this is a great investement if you find you spend more time charging your DS than you do playing it! Does exactly what you would expect and gives your console a new lease of life.

The bundled scredriver was, unfotunately, completely useless - but I'm not sure that including a tool that gets used once and then thrown away is a great idea anyway. Installation is simple and quick. Recommended.

A Snowball In Hell
A Snowball In Hell
by Christopher Brookmyre
Edition: Paperback
Price: £9.99

4.0 out of 5 stars Another great read, 14 July 2009
This review is from: A Snowball In Hell (Paperback)
This is another very fine novel from Christopher Brookmyre.

I might take exception with the `hilarious' tag on the book's cover. There are far fewer laugh-out-loud comedy situations than in some of his previous novels. Instead, there are digs at a number of targets in our modern, celebrity obsessed culture, which had me nodding along in amused agreement.

As mentioned elsewhere, some of the characters are making a re-appearance from earlier books and it probably helps to be familiar with the back catalogue when reading this one.

The plot romps along at a good pace with more than enough twists and misdirections to keep you guessing until the end.

I've yet to be disappointed by a Brookmyre novel. My only complaint is that one a year just isn't enough!

4.0 out of 5 stars Buy it and burn your own playlist, 11 Feb. 2009
This review is from: Happiness Is The Road (Audio CD)
My short recommendation. Anyone with a slight interest in Marillion's music should definitely buy this album.

My expanded view - there's just a bit too much 'filler' for this to work successfully as a double album. Of course, if you ask ten different fans what the best tracks are you would get ten different answers.

Given the low price of this newly issued double CD set, I would recommond that you buy it, listen a few times and setup a playlist or burn a single CD of the tracks that work for you.

Marillion have always innovated and experimented with their sound. It's why I love them. There truly is something here for all tastes, so get listening!
