A Pig of Cold Poison (Gil Cunningham)
A Pig of Cold Poison (Gil Cunningham)
Price: £5.22

3.0 out of 5 stars Keep a Scottish dialect dictionary to hand..., 28 July 2014

A good read, once past the first and very confusing chapter which introduces you to more characters than are in War and Peace! A bit derivative, however; the Shardlake novels are much better if you like historical detective fiction.

A terrific and page-turner of a read which seems to have been as well-researched as all Lindsey Davis's other books. Just wish I had it when I was doing the Civil War at school!

This is lovely, and works perfectly as a light covering over your shoulders on a hot night. Just be careful not to catch it on anything; it snags very easily!

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant, 30 May 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A terrific read which is incredibly well-researched. How one historian can bring together history, archaeology, legend... from so many different periods and sources is a mystery, but Davies does it. I just wish I had bought a hardback instead of a paperback; the soft version is difficult to handle.

5.0 out of 5 stars Revealing and intriguing, 14 Jan 2014
An excellent selection from a huge archive which reveals much about the man and the scholar. The early letters particularly reveal a humorous, self-effacing, gentle and kind person whose public persona may have appeared completely differently. If anything, the volume is slightly over-footnoted but better too much than too little. The introductory paragraphs are enlightening and fascinating. The letters about the Hitler diaries fiasco are intriguing and alone tell us much of the real character of Hugh Trevor-Roper. A terrific read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant!, 28 Jun 2013

How can you go wrong with Michael Wood? The learning is evident but delivered with a light touch. The book is beautifully illustrated, too, and I learnt a huge amount both from the texts and the pictures. It arrived on time and in perfect condition.

A gentle book, well-researched and well-written, and perfect for holiday reading. The characters are believable, and the only downside is the rather implausible ending!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating., 24 May 2013

This review is from: An English Affair (Hardcover)
A terrific read, taking us first through the dramatis personae of the Profumo Affair, and then through the case itself. No-one comes out of it with much sympathy, but the writing is superb, clear, amusing in many places, laugh-out-loud in others, and desperately sad most of the way. I would thoroughly recommend it, particularly to anyone who has a memory of those extraordinary times, and to anyone who thinks that feminism hasn't achieved anything over the last 50 years.
