And Sons
And Sons
by David Gilbert
Edition: Hardcover
Price: 11.89

3.0 out of 5 stars Not what I hoped, 15 May 2014
This review is from: And Sons (Hardcover)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
I read some reviews of this book before buying it and thought it sounded like a very good read. However I don't think this book lives up to that expectation.

Some good sections, some interesting ideas (especially a more fanciful notion that arises later on through the book) but wow, these are some unlikeable people! All the main characters had very little to connect you to them - basically they're an assortment of bullies, underachievers and frustrated losers. The main narrative character is so wet and miserable that you just feel like reaching into the book and giving him a good shake! I also thought that David Gilbert's portrayal of the teenagers fell into the usual trap of writing dialogue / thoughts that sound nothing like most teenagers on earth. One minute Andy (the young son) is using lines such as "like the Met on Eightieth and Fifth, with the knights and stuff?" and then the next has thoughts such as "death existing as gesture rather than extinction"! I always find inconsistencies like that pull you straight out of the narrative and remind that this is a piece of writing rather than an immersive story. I suppose you could argue that we are seeing Andy through the prism of the narrator's writing but it still doesn't ring very true for me.

Overall I would say that it's not a terrible book but wasn't the wonderful piece of writing I was hoping for.

3.0 out of 5 stars Sweet dreams, 15 May 2014
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
A good idea - use an existing light switch to fit this soft night light and turn it on when your little one is drifting off. The device fits well into a standard bayonet fitting and is easy to set up. However adding this to the standard light fitting does make your light bulb hang that bit lower - not a good look if you have a small lampshade as we did.

Click once to put the nightlight on, click off and on again to put the main light on. Cycle round as needed. All sounds fine but in reality it proves to be quite a frustrating experience. As any parent of a small child will tell you, the chances of you putting the nightlight on and walking away for the rest of the evening are quite rare - therefore every time you need to go in and put the main light on you have to cycle through the clicks to get the proper illumination. Not good when your little one is screaming away! Overall a good idea and does what it is supposed to do but, in my opinion, it doesn't quite work.

1.0 out of 5 stars Truly awful and dangerous, 15 May 2014
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
The "shavette" (hideous term) sounds like it should work well - all the benefits of a cut throat razor but with the convenience of a disposable. However the whole design is shockingly bad - having to snap a razor blade in two and insert it into a flimsy housing is a recipe for sliced fingers or worse! It seems amazing that something so poorly designed and frankly dangerous is openly for sale. Very very poor product and I couldn't recommend it to anyone.

Case Logic Universal Folio for 7-8 inch Tablet
Case Logic Universal Folio for 7-8 inch Tablet
Price: 29.43

3.0 out of 5 stars Just doesn't cover it..., 7 Feb 2014
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
We got this cover for our Nexus 7 tablet. It claims that it fits all kinds of 7-8" tablets but in reality this is achieved by spring clips that fit over your tablet and hold it in place. It works after a fashion but it never feels truly secure and the tablet seems to jiggle around a bit inside the case. The construction is solid (not luxurious) but the tablet feels like it could survive a decent whack whilst buried inside! Overall though I think it's way overpriced for what it is - 30+ for a case which doesn't fit your tablet exactly is way too steep! Couple this with the bland design and you could get something very similar for a fifth of the price elsewhere.

Tacwise Z3-140 Staple Gun. Staple Gun Tacker
Tacwise Z3-140 Staple Gun. Staple Gun Tacker
Price: 19.81

5.0 out of 5 stars Wise Tacking..., 7 Feb 2014
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
This staple gun seems sturdy and professional and so far has performed very well. The edge adjuster (a spacer which attaches to the gun and allows you to maintain a consistent line whilst moving along the edge of your material) is a very useful feature when doing a row of stapling. It seems like such a simple idea but it works really well!. The action on the trigger is responsive and it doesn't feel like you have to stand on the handle to get a staple out (which was a problem with our last staple gun). All in all a solid piece of kit that will hopefully be a toolbox staple (arf!) for years to come.

5.0 out of 5 stars Clean and bright..., 5 Dec 2013
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
These bulbs were used to replace some existing earlier generation energy saving bulbs. The difference is remarkable. The older bulbs look so cold in comparison (despite claiming to be "warm white") and the spread of light from these bulbs is excellent. In fact, it's very hard to tell the difference between these and the old inefficient halogen GU10 bulbs. It's not really possible to give a mark on the longevity of these bulbs but they seem very well made and I have no reason to think they won't go the distance at the moment. Very impressed overall.

How to Babysit a Grandad
How to Babysit a Grandad
by Jean Reagan
Edition: Paperback
Price: 5.24

4.0 out of 5 stars Grandads need a lot of looking after!, 28 Oct 2013
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
A nice book featuring a little boy "looking after" his grandad (essentially doing all the things grandads do when baby sitting but reversing the perception of the roles and putting the child in charge of the baby sitting!) The images are lovely and my two children at 3 and 2 enjoyed looking at some of the extra details (e.g. the little lizards, the pictures in the drawings, the grandad wearing all the clothes etc). It's a nice book for grandads to read to the grandchildren but it's also a good one for parents as a reminder of the fun times children can have with grandad when he isn't with them. The only slight drawback for me is the bullet point style on some of the pages which doesn't flow and make it as pleasant to read as, say, a rhyming story or something with a rhythm. However, it's an entertaining book and one my children seem to have enjoyed so far.

Orla Kiely Home

5.0 out of 5 stars High Class, 28 Oct 2013
This review is from: Orla Kiely Home (Hardcover)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
My wife is a big fan of Orla Kiely products so she was delighted to see this book. It's a big fat volume with an awful lot of inspiration using Orla's 60s and 70s-style designs. Things that may look garish or out of place on their own come together beautifully and the images are stunning. The book is very well put together, beautifully printed and bound and as well as being inspirational would look great simply displayed in the home. The designs may not be to everyone's taste but Orla rules OK in this house so the book is a perfect summation of her retro but modern design. I can hear the ping of inspiration in my wife's brain on most of the pages and that's the perfect recommendation.

5.0 out of 5 stars I got the power..., 25 Oct 2013
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
I bought a slightly smaller version of this device a while ago which lasted me and my mate through a whole festival charging every day, this device is even better. At 10000mAh it stores a lot of power (obviously) so it is quite heavy but it charges quickly, connects easily and even looks nice. All in all a top product and invaluable for holidays, festivals, coach and train journeys etc. I got at least 3 charges out of it and it's still got juice left in it!

Big Data For Dummies
Big Data For Dummies
by Judith Hurwitz
Edition: Paperback
Price: 14.95

4.0 out of 5 stars Big topics, 25 Oct 2013
This review is from: Big Data For Dummies (Paperback)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
This book introduces most of the main concepts about Big Data - a buzz phrase that has found itself at the top of tree in recent years. Speaking as a non-techy, there was stuff that still went over my head, despite the tried and tested Dummies format (maybe I am still *that* much of a dummy!) but there were parts that were tailored to practical business application and would equip you as a BA or PM with the knowledge to consider whether any of the big data principles could work in your organisation. It makes for good reading and demystifies some of the murk that surrounds this hot topic. Definitely recommended as a starting point.
