4.0 out of 5 stars Apocalypse Then., 30 Nov. 2014

This is a pretty good one volume summary on the collapse of the late Bronze Age civilisations of the Eastern Mediterranean. It sticks closely to what is actually known as opposed to what has been suggested. The style is easy to read. Cline is convincing when he infers that any search for The Cause of the collapse is futile because it was a perfect storm of events. What is quite chilling is that the situation in the late Bronze Age of 'globalized' long distance trade, dependency on a key raw material that is outside of the control of the main users, centralisation into large power blocks, and so on is somewhat reflective of our world.

2.0 out of 5 stars Military manoeuvres, 30 Nov. 2014

Very heavy going and poorly mapped. I can see the utility of this book for historians and professional military officers. Only the very determined readers will get to the end.

I really wanted to like this book because there is a paucity of information on Rome's war with the Parthians. The author is enthusiastic and put in a great deal of research but the writing is poor to the point that it is difficult to read. Also it is not clear what evidence the author has for many of the firm statements he makes especially about the intent and motivation of historical characters. Sorry to be so negative as the author has worked hard on this project.

5.0 out of 5 stars Shades of Biggles, 9 Nov. 2013
The Osprey Duel format has proved popular with the target market as it packages weapon data into a historical context. This is a good example of the breed.

There is something strangely romantic about the clashes between the last biplane fighters in a world of monoplanes. The Gladiator and Fiat fought in sideshow campaigns that were like an overdue to the main concert. WWII would end with jet fighters, the ME 262 and the Meteor but somehow these far more dangerous fighters lack the glamour of for wings.

4.0 out of 5 stars A valuable resource, 9 Nov. 2013

You would think that basic source books on military campaigns would have been made irrelevant by the internet but not so. Modellers and wargamers looking for basic information on the armies of theTaiping War will find little online so there is still a market for Men at Arms books. This is a useful example. It also contains a brief overview of the politics and history of the period.

A solid work on a little known but significant event.
