5.0 out of 5 stars Looks like this is currently out of print, 8 Feb. 2015
This review is from: Trout Mask Replica (Audio CD)
Looks like this is currently out of print, which I find staggering.

I love everything about this album:

*The fantastic album artwork and photography
*The snippets of dialogue from the “bush recordings”
*The bizarre band member pseudonyms
*The ludicrous humour (e.g. The Blimp) and grotesque, surreal, idiot savant imagery
*The crackling atmosphere of the recordings, with Zappa chuckling from behind the producer’s chair, giving CB’s wildest ideas free rein
*And of course the amazing music – delta blues twisted inside out, mixed with free jazz (CB’s amazing saxophone work). There is so much beauty and depth to the music once you get attuned to it – it crackles with energy and creativity.

Trampled Under Foot: The Power and Excess of Led Zeppelin
Trampled Under Foot: The Power and Excess of Led Zeppelin
by Barney Hoskyns
Edition: Hardcover
Price: £20.00

4.0 out of 5 stars Bit of cut 'n' paste job, 29 Nov. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This book mainly consists of collated excerpts from past interviews rather than narrative from the author. All the same, Zeppelin fans will find it enjoyable as it flows well and the excerpts yield interesting insights into the band's story.

4.0 out of 5 stars Glad that this album is available again, 29 Nov. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Great album that hasn't been available for years. One of Beefheart's best along with Trout Mask Replica. Would have preferred actual CD rather than MP3 and is expensive for a download (7.49) but pleased with purchase as can finally replace my old vinyl copy.

Inside the Blues, 1942-1982: Four Decades of the Greatest Blues Guitarists
Inside the Blues, 1942-1982: Four Decades of the Greatest Blues Guitarists
by Dave Rubin
Edition: Paperback

3.0 out of 5 stars A good book but buy the version with CD, 17 July 2008
This is a good survey of blues guitar but make sure that you buy the other edition, also available from Amazon, which includes CD audio. The tab examples provided in the book are hard to use without an audio reference.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great value, 20 Jun. 2008
Comprehensive range of songs; accurate transcriptions; well-produced CD; useful and interesting performance notes. What more could you ask for? Also these are really good songs to get your teeth into as a guitarist, (many of them bar-room standards) even if you are not a massive Skynyrd fan.

AMPS!: The Other Half of Rock 'n' Roll
AMPS!: The Other Half of Rock 'n' Roll
by Ritchie Fliegler
Edition: Paperback
Price: £14.99

5.0 out of 5 stars very enjoyable read, 2 April 2008
Like Ritchie Fliegler's other books this is enjoyable for the general reader: he communicates his obvious knowledge of the subject in a very engaging manner. Might have benefited from more detail on the maintenance of amps, but excellent all in all.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the better books around on this subject, 2 April 2008
This is certainly not a primer for the budding amp technician - there isn't enough technical content. However, for the player who is interested in developing their knowledge of valve amplifiers, in terms of getting more out of them, it's a good book. It's comprehensive, well-written and well-presented, in my view. I'm no expert but I have looked at a number of the books out there on this subject and this one compares favourably.

5.0 out of 5 stars A good purchase even if you're not a fanatic, 6 Feb. 2008
This review is from: Five Easy Pieces (Audio CD)
Unlike some box sets this is not targeted at the completist who wants all of the outtakes etc. If you are a fan of Scott Walker but only have the first four solo albums plus the later stuff (Tilt etc) then this is a good purchase. It means you can cover off the best bits of his '60s Walker Bros and '70s solo career plus out of print (comparative) rarities like 'Til The Band Comes In and his four tracks from Nite Flites (which are sensational, by the way). If you are a Scott novice this box probably provides you with all the tracks you will need, since it contains the essential stuff as well. Each CD is based around a theme, making the listening experience a coherent one.

5.0 out of 5 stars a must for all Elevators and Erickson fans, 12 Jan. 2008
this seems a real labour of love - very detailed, based on extensive interviews, plenty on the social and cultural context of the psychedelic era, great photographs. if you are interested in the Elevators then I highly recommend this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars an entertaining and informative book with great photographs, 12 Dec. 2007
the author explores a number of classic / specimen guitar rigs in order to demonstrate how each piece of equipment contributes to the classic sound. the book provides a fair degree of technical insight but is unlikely to discourage the general reader. some great photos as well that I've not seen before. my only quibble might be around the classic rigs the author has chosen - it's light on contemporary (post 1980) rock. nonetheless a very enjoyable read and great value.
