A Book of Scars (Breen and Tozer)
A Book of Scars (Breen and Tozer)
by William Shaw
Edition: Hardcover
Price: £16.58

4.0 out of 5 stars Searing, 6 July 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
By far the most violent of the Breen and Tozer trilogy, this book was difficult to read at times, especially at the conclusion which abandoned the thoughtful exploration of relationships and sixties society of the previous volumes and seemed to be more of a screenplay for a horror film. Mr Shaw may feel the excesses are justified by the subplot. There is a hint of a fourth story in the last pages, but I think the saga has run its course, with the two main characters left to an uncertain future. Again there is a strong African thread to the plot, and there would be opportunities to tackle UDI or even the Groundnut Scheme in subsequent stories. Shaw is a very good writer, and has created two memorable and complex characters; the supporting cast are not handled quite as deftly. I hope he does not do a Peter Robinson and let quality lapse in subsequent stories, as they stand the three books are up with Ian Rankin and John Harvey.

3.0 out of 5 stars Summer base layer, 30 Jun. 2015

Lightweight technical base layer, good for summer bike rides but a bit flimsy- can hear stitches giving when I pull it over my admittedly large head

To Dwell in Darkness (Duncan Kincaid/Gemma James Novels)
To Dwell in Darkness (Duncan Kincaid/Gemma James Novels)
by Deborah Crombie
Edition: Paperback
Price: £9.02

4.0 out of 5 stars Here here, 30 Jun. 2015

This is a good series of detective novels with a likeable if cluttered cast of characters, but this episode seems to have been written with an eye on the next instalment, with some unresolved elements that spoil the ending. Yet again with this writer, proof reading has been neglected, with Americanisms and a big clanger over 'hear hear'- even in the paperback version. Kincaid and his family seem too cosy to be true, no doubt that will be challenged in the next book. The paperback also had a very flimsy cover, not good when this writer is such a big seller.

4.0 out of 5 stars Does the Summer job, 5 Jun. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I wanted a lightweight Summer top that would go over a short sleeved T shirt or proper cycling top, and this fits the bill well. XXL just right for my 6'2" 14stone + frame. 2 pockets, one zipped, a little shallow. Should last for a couple of Summers which is all you'd expect at the price. I like high-viz as local drivers here in the New Forest are either careless or arrogant or senile (or all 3). Have to be careful not to scare the horses though!

5.0 out of 5 stars Good series opener, 15 April 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Very promising start to what is promised to be a series, very well plotted and pretty credible, although most readers will no doubt claim to have solved it early on. The writing is competent, the female heroine attractive, I hope Ms Grey hasn't killed off to many of her secondary characters. Highly recommended.

Same item available with different logo and more expensive elsewhere, useful mini multitool covering most cycling bolts and screws and will fit in back pocket, not the lightest multitool but good for day to day emergency use.

Playing with Fire (Jessica Daniel Series)
Playing with Fire (Jessica Daniel Series)
by Kerry Wilkinson
Edition: Paperback
Price: £5.99

5.0 out of 5 stars Good starting point?, 11 Mar. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Best Jessica Daniel story of the 4 or 5 I have read, and although it references earlier cases it would be a good starting point. I suspect that some personal experience and greater care with the writing are responsible. Minor characters are well drawn, Jessica's boyfriend remains very passive and lightly sketched out.

Crossing the Line (Jessica Daniel Series)
Crossing the Line (Jessica Daniel Series)
by Kerry Wilkinson
Edition: Paperback
Price: £6.39

3.0 out of 5 stars OK formulaic police procedural, 1 Mar. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I don't think the series adds a great deal to detective fiction, Jessica the heroine never emerges as a fully rounded character, despite having more than her fair share of issues (infertility, mother in a care home, bad driving) and some of the many peripheral characters are underwritten; Adam, who should be more than peripheral, does not come to life at all and as with many detective stories the long arm of coincidence is fully employed. At times the writing gets bogged down, as with the pop festival, and the establishing of the link between the victims is unconvincing. The Manchester setting is OK although the Northern Quarter has rather more to it than shown here. Not a complete dud, but not the sort of book you can't put down.
