Ever After: A Cinderella Story [1998] [DVD]
Ever After: A Cinderella Story [1998] [DVD]
Dvd ~ Drew Barrymore
Price: £4.20

4.0 out of 5 stars The "Real" Cinderella, 3 Mar 2012
An ingenious idea: tell the story of "Cinderella" as if the fairy-story were a distorted version of something that really happened. The story is there, but there are no magic spells, and no fairy godmother (though Leonardo da Vinci gets Drew Barrymore to the ball!). Very enjoyable - we know more or less what is going to happen, but there are nice twists. And Angelica Houston makes a fine stepmother!

3.0 out of 5 stars The Last "Sarah Janes", 3 Mar 2012
This contains the last three episodes made before the sad death of Eizabeth Sladen. Two of them are not perhaps up to the usual high standard of the series - "Sky" is a bit feeble, and "The Man Who Never Was", with a brilliant central idea, has one or two weaknesses; buyt the remaining one is very good indeed, and in fact rather moving. We are also given a series of tributes to Elizabeth Sladen (with clips from earlier adventures with Dr Who).

When God Spoke English: The Making of the King James Bible
When God Spoke English: The Making of the King James Bible

4.0 out of 5 stars The birth of the KJV, 21 Jan 2012
This fascinating and eminently readable book sets the making of the King James or Authorized version of the Bible in its context (including the major factor in thast context, King James himself), as well as narrating the history of the work as far as this can eb ascertained. Nicolson's own comments are usually brilliant, though at times he sneaks in a conjecture about his characters' hidden thoughts or deeds which is purely speculative. I greatly enjoyed reading it, and emereged with a good deal of respect for the Translators, as well as more knowledge of their strngths and weaknesses as people.

2.0 out of 5 stars The Crock of Gold, 16 Dec 2011
This review is from: The Crock of Gold (Paperback)
The content is absolutely glorious. It manages to be funny and serious, even solemn. It moves between legend, fantasy and even at times the commonplace. It is full of gems of language (a curse in ehich "policemsn were exposed naked to the blushes of Eternity", for instance0. But the production is awful. It seems to have been reproduced from an edition with smaller pages, and whenever a word was hyphenated at the end of a line, the hyphen is solemny reproduced in the middle of th text. So while the book itself merits five stars, this edition scores only two!

5.0 out of 5 stars Long-awaited reissue, 23 Oct 2011
This review is from: All Hallows' Eve (Paperback)
This was the last and arguably best of Williams's supernatural;/spiritual thrillers, long unavailable in this country. It has one of the creepiest openings ever written, a strangely convincing picture oflife after death, a fromidable villain, and penetrating insight into the human soul, good or evil. It also has an excellent introduction by T. S. Eliot.

3.0 out of 5 stars Belloc's Cautionary Verses, 23 Oct 2011
The verses are of course superb. It is a shame that they do not include
the splendid illustrations by "B.T.B." which accompanied the edition I was brought up on. If they had, this would get five stars!

Stardust [DVD] [2007]
Stardust [DVD] [2007]
Dvd ~ Michelle Pfeiffer
Price: £3.00

4.0 out of 5 stars FSF/R/C, 16 April 2010
This review is from: Stardust [DVD] [2007] (DVD)
A mixture of fantasy and romantic comedy. Highly enjoyable; my only criticism would be that occasionally it moved too fast, and it was hard to make sure one knew what was happening.
