The Girl Who Saved the King of Sweden
The Girl Who Saved the King of Sweden
Price: £1.99

3.0 out of 5 stars An easy read...., 16 Nov. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A lightly humerous and casual walk through the life of a girl from Soweto who manages, along her life's unfortunate journey, to pick up a retinue of strange companions and... an atomic bomb!
Not as good as the author's other book/film; "The hundred year old man who climbed out of the window" which was a much richer read in both humour and story depth. Not a bad book, though.

Hmmmm. A bit light-weight, methinks. The authors spent too much time angsting (is that a word?) with the main character's feelings and not enough time on making other than a fairly predictable plot. The 3 books would have nicely fitted into one and at the end of parts 1-3 I couldn't be bothered with any other of the parts to come. It passed the time.

Bite: The most gripping thriller you will ever read
Bite: The most gripping thriller you will ever read

3.0 out of 5 stars Something to get your teeth into..., 11 Oct. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
NOT the most gripping thriller you will ever read (Trade description Act?) but a fairly nice read and simple story with 2 threads (one of them a Diary thread) running alongside each other. Only coming together at the end to understand the relevance of the Diary thread - clever! Main topic for the book is Mosquitos; a missing lady scientist who specialises in Mosquitos, a possible epidemic of mosquito bites, a drugs conglomerate who want nothing to do with a cure for mosquito bites... and, a race against time to find a cure for .....mosquito bites. Oh yes, the "Bite" title refers to...you've guessed, Mosquito Bites!
It does sound a bit thin but the "thriller" bit of the story is good and a welcome and fresh change from Murderers, Spys, Drug dealers et al.

5.0 out of 5 stars A HUGE adventure!!, 11 Sept. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Very clever how the writer uses three seperate stories that all start at the same time of the alien invasion. They are then interwoven as the books progress making this an epic adventure. Kept me occupied for ages (1000+ pages!) and the ending allows you to finish the adventure but also allows for follow-up books to continue with the main characters. As the stories interweave, I did find it a tiny bit confusing when each chapter jumped between characters alternatively. This made me skip back to the previous chapter to remind myself where it left off. However, enjoyable and clever writing. Top marks to the author. A well-deserved 5-stars.

3.0 out of 5 stars Twilight Saga copy....., 9 Jun. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Quite a readable book but as I progressed I realised that it appears to be a copy of the Twilight Saga, albeit with angels/spirits etc.instead of werewolves/vampires, good versus bad blah... blah.. This stopped me buying any more of the series.

The plot is a world apart from the usual apocolypse book, so well done there. The reason for the "Terrorist" action was not explained, leaving me to ponder... why? And then the baddie got shot. Book finished. I can only presume that the author had got fed up with their own book and decided how to end it so there's no sequel. Hmmmm.......

3.0 out of 5 stars Wonky table...., 1 Jun. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
An easy to read style of writing but this did not compensate for the lack of action in the plot. Two thirds of the way in the plot started to up tempo and I was left wondering how it was all going to fit into the last third. Now I know. Rush the end to it's conclusion and leave a few obvious plot questions unanswered. If I'd bought this as a book, it might have come in useful for propping up the leg of a wonky table.

4.0 out of 5 stars The ending leaves it open for more...., 5 May 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The last part of this trilogy wasn't as gripping as the previous two....it was well written, but how to end it? I suppose we all expect the heroine to fight through and conquer the alien invaders but I'm glad it didn't happen. The ending is logical and conclusive for the trilogy BUT it does allow some follow ups (which is what, I think, we are promised). What I couldn't grasp was that a so-called intelligent super-alien race couldn't grasp that we humans are fully cognitive beings and deserved more than extinction. How would they have felt if we did this to them...?

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun, Fun, Fun...., 28 Mar. 2014

A lovely, light, skipping and humerous read. Delightful characters and a great plot that knits the main elderly character's past with his present journey, having "escaped" from the Retirement Home where he felt incarcerated. You should love it. Apparently, it was overlooked by the publishers first time.... a bit like the Harry Potter books were. There, that says it! Enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Oh yes, you need to read this....., 28 Mar. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Not having read "The Shining" I was wondering if I should have, as I opened this book and started. I shouldn't have worried, it stands alone extremely well and is beautifully written to convey the friendship between the goodies and the horribleness (is that a word?) of the baddies. If, like me, you grimaced at King's earlier "Lisey's Game" and "Duma Key", you should find this a great read to restore your faith in King's ability to make good writing (although he has penned some right bummers, in my view).
