5.0 out of 5 stars Top Class songwriting team - + don't overlook Hungry Bird, 30 July 2013
The songwriting partnership is excellent on this album and combined with KD'd enviable ease of vocal technique makes this album quite something. The band add a rockier sound in places but at the same time this is foiled by seemingly effortless acoustic ballads. It's worth noting there is an extended version of this album available with a few extra numbers including the sublime 'Hungry Bird' -be sure to download this track if you don't have it!!

5.0 out of 5 stars colourful fun, 9 May 2012

I really enjoyed this puzzle - brightly coloured and very imaginative subject
Lots of detail - a teeny spider, keys, ghouls, legged books and spells !
Good to see this subject in the 500 format which I prefer!

4.0 out of 5 stars more of the good stuff - but it's fast!, 18 Oct 2010
I ordered this as soon as I had volume 1 which I found very useful learning at home.
This is more of the same - very useful for ornaments - but be warned Karim goes at pace on some of the
advanced rhythms - Fellahi for eg!
I also have Amir Naoum's dvd which I think also would suit a complete beginner!

If you are a dancer who specializes in drum solos - the sections with Ewa should appeal.

It's a minor niggle but personally I could lose the bloopers section - another solo/group performance
would be better use of disc space

5.0 out of 5 stars dipping your toe in !, 10 Sep 2010
If you are taking a safari or beach hotel in East Africa this is a compact useful guide to allow you
a couple of local words/phrases to try out in Kiswahili. Don't expect grammar tables etc as it is aimed at the tourist
but it is accessible, lightweight and quite colourful!

5.0 out of 5 stars travelling light!, 10 Sep 2010
helpful more compact version of the standard Insights guide - weighs a lot less if travelling light.
I read the fuller version before travelling which is very good but very rather heavy - maybe the producers could
address this fact?

3.0 out of 5 stars Is this author saying that same sex partnerships are the answer?, 27 Aug 2008
I read this book very recently and was purturbed by it as it does seem to suggest that the only really happy realtionships we can experience in this life might be same sex partnerships - I doubt this was the author's intention but that's how it struck me. Anyone else feel the same? I'm straight by the way.

5.0 out of 5 stars "Gallagher at his belting best", 4 Sep 2007
This review is from: Rory Gallagher (Audio CD)
As a huge Rory fan, this album remains my all time favourite! The sound is somewhat reminiscent of the days of Taste but the album is highly original in terms of writing and solo playing. Gallagher appears totally at ease producing incredible solos and enviably catchy riffs. On each track Gallagher succeeds in extricating different textures and sounds from his guitar work which has great energy and pace, well supported by his fellow musicians. The solos on "The Last Time" and "I fall apart" are really special. I hate to sound like a boring old fart (42) but people who were lucky enough to have seen Taste live or Gallagher in these early days of his career really saw an individual and original talent that is very seldom encountered today.

5.0 out of 5 stars AN EXCEPTIONAL ALBUM FOR A SUBLIME SONGSTRESS, 24 Feb 2007
This review is from: When I Was a Boy (Audio CD)
This is indeed an exceptional album!

I bought this album after hearing 2 of Siberry's songs covered by KD Lang on her "hymns of the 49th parallel" and in my ignorance was expecting a rather gentle 'country' album.

How wrong I was!! Instead I was totally overwhelmed by the innovative artistic content of this work. The strength of personality and remarkable vocal quality come through in each song - rather reminiscent of Kate Bush's very individual style! Siberry sings about the 'big stuff' in life - Love, Passion, Faith, Loss, Pain and Spirituality. The sublime quality of the vocal improvisation of "Sweet Incarnadine" is breath taking and the raw emotional power which comes through to the listener on 'The Vigil' is simply heartbreaking.

All the songs have a beautifully lyric quality and there are uplifting ballads too: 'Calling all angels' and "Love is everything' have beatiful melodic line. There's also Siberry at her most sensual - the powerful rhythmic quality of "The Temple" and "Sail across the water" are all extremely enjoyable songs. In fact there isn't a bad song on this album. Definitely recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars People, Love, Life and Death - what else do we have?, 24 Feb 2007
Not since the 1980s and Alan Bleasdale's "Boys from the Blackstuff" has a tv drama series had such an effect on me. I have seen all the 6 feet under series now and found it to be compelling and startling in its dramatic content and brilliantly acted by a consistently superlative cast whose replacement at any point in the series would have been quite inconceivable! Of particular note are Frances Conroy and Lauren Ambrose but everyone involved in this excellently written series is to be commended.

This concluding series has an edgy quality to the direction and the writer is masterful at portraying the passage of time at different paces for different characters involved in the story - either hurtling through life as it can seem at middle age or drifting aimlessly through the confusion of adolescence and our senior years. There is something that this series offers which will strike a dramatic chord with any viewer.

Alan Ball's writing is of a quality that is almost 'spooky' in its observation of the human psyche including all aspects our psychoses, dysfunction, heroism, betrayal, terror, quirkiness, unconditonal love, devotion and fears. It confronts head on the aspect of personal tragedy which we will all at some time in all our lives be faced with and have to struggle with to try and make sense of our time here on earth. People, Love, Life and death -these are all we ever have.
