5.0 out of 5 stars Poignant especially the Roll of Honour that is chapter twelve!, 2 Nov. 2014
Along with the well deserved accolades that others have written about this book it has a hidden gem that I was unaware of when purchasing my copy online. Chapter twelve is devoted to the roll of honour of those commemorated on the Beckenham War Memorial. Nearly 600 men out of 711 names have been identified and as much information as can be ascertained has been meticulously researched to give the reader a personal view of the men who paid the ultimate sacrifice. A wonderful book and a fitting tribute to our forefathers.

I think a better name for this book would have been "Beckenham Through Time in Pictures". There is not much meat on the bone but a selection of photographs "then and now" with an interesting potted history in a few sentences. Depending on your expectancy I would recommend that you personally look this over before purchasing to avoid any possible disappointment! From my point of view being a Beckenham boy and growing up there in the early post war years I have had much enjoyment in trawling through this book (as far as it went) and it is a most welcome addition to my bookshelf.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simple but Effective!!, 30 Aug. 2014

I would not rely on this product alone but used in conjunction with regular cleaning, vacuuming and spray treatment (especially if you have a serious infestation) this is a very effective device. However it is not a magic solution so don't just put these down for a couple days and expect to solve the problem.
Regular vacuuming and of course treating the source ( usually your cat or dog and often both) will break the life cycle of the flea and return your home to harmony!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Innovative and good value!!, 19 Aug. 2014

Solid protection for your S4 mini at a very good price. The only weak point will be the plastic holding the phone in place but this is no different to any other case I have had and should do good service under normal everyday treatment. You will have to leave the case open to recharge your phone that some may find a bit inconvenient but it has not been a problem for me. It comes with a sticky screen protector should you need one and a small polishing cloth.
I especially like the sleep/wake function when the cover is opened and closed plus the magnetic catch that flips over to cover and protect the camera lens when you put it in your pocket or bag. Nice one!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Meets my expectations!!, 15 Feb. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Just to put the record straight these binoculars by Barr and Stroud are in no way connected to the British company that made fine optical equipment for the Royal Navy during two world wars. There is no UK factory that some would like to believe but these optics are made in China for a UK company who purchased the brand name around 2008.
The 10 year warranty is not as comprehensive as first appears with only the first five years covering parts and labour and they reserve the right to repair or replace defective parts as necessary at their sole discretion. The next five years is only covering the parts and not the labour. The warranty does not cover rubber eyecups, neck straps, rubber coatings and coverings and cases that are subject to wear and tear. Optical misalignment (image distortion or double image caused by dislodging of prisms) is also not covered under warranty as this will only happen if the product has been subject to a shock or has been dropped. Problems arising because of misuse, accidental damage, water penetration (excluding waterproof models) invasion of dust/dirt, cleaning and damage caused by cleaning is also excluded. So the best of luck with that if you have any problems down the line!
On the bright side these are a very respectable pair of waterproof, fog proof, nitrogen filled optics for around £70.00. However if I were using binoculars for serious use on a regular basis I would explore other options. Nicely weighted with a comfortable grip and an image quality that is more than adequate but fringing on the outer edges is sometimes noticeable in certain situations but perfectly acceptable at this lower end of the market. I did use these for a bit of moon gazing but was not all that impressed and would not recommend them for that activity.
The carrying case is soft and unpadded which offers little protection but overall if you are a casual user looking for a decent pair of affordable binoculars these could be an excellent choice.

5.0 out of 5 stars A little gem of a book about a fast disappearing generation!!, 18 April 2012
This review is from: The Sugar Girls (Paperback)
There are few accolades I can add about this book that has not already been noted. It was for me a well written and absorbing account of social history in that part of the East End of London towards the final months of the Second World War and the early years beyond.

All the girls worked at Tate & Lyle who for many years was not only the biggest but the most generous employer in the area which is why jobs there were so sort after. Having been employed there for over 30 years I was able to happily identify with many of the work related themes and some of the characters mentioned.

My only real small criticism is that the girls' stories follow a time line with the opening chapter devoted to Ethel's early memories then Lilian followed by Gladys. By the time you reach chapter 4 the story reverts back to Ethel and so on. Joan's arrival in chapter 14 adds to the complicated mix so unless you have an outstanding memory you find yourself referring to previous chapters to refresh yourself on what happened to whom, where and when. Therefore I would suggest that this book be consumed in one or two sittings which will help to maintain the thread of the individual stories and personalities. The Kindle edition allows you to download their stories individually and it might suit some to read the book in the same manner. However, that is just a personal opinion.

The authors notes at the end admit to using their own research and imagination to fill in gaps where old memories are incomplete and that is apparent in some of the writing and the style of language used but it does not detract from a very fine, honest book that tugs at every emotion in equal measure and generates a warm admiration for some very special ladies!! Just read it!!

4.0 out of 5 stars No good for a zoom lens over 42mm!, 11 Oct. 2011
I only had this flashgun for a very short time and for general use it was up to the mark and fair value. However it is inadequate with any zoom lens over 42mm (four thirds) as you will be left with a dark shadowy line on the bottom of your images where the flash hits the end of the lens. I upgraded to the more powerful Polaroid PL126-PZ which gives the flash clearance over the lens but regret to say that it is no longer available for Olympus/Panasonic camera's on Amazon.

5.0 out of 5 stars A little gem, well worth reading!!, 26 May 2010
This review is from: D-Day to Berlin (Hardcover)
I would liken this book to a fine coating of snow on the landscape. It covers all aspects as the title suggests but does not get bogged down in fine detail. In just 327 pages Andrew Williams has written a very short, yet clear and balanced account of the western allies advance from D-Day onwards. By avoiding jingoism and overly expressed self opinions he has produced a fine book which is easily read over a few nights and a recommended addition to your bookshelf.
