5.0 out of 5 stars SHOCKING!, 31 Aug. 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Shock Doctrine [DVD] [2009] (DVD)
This documentary is SHOCKING!
Extremely well constructed, explained and referenced
It explains and puts in a nut-shell the terrifying method governments, namely USA & UK, use to manipulate the populations of slave nations, (their own and others) by 'shocking' them into subsevience.
It is far too complex and detailed to explain adequately here so I would highly recommend buying this dvd if want your eyes opened to a fascinating reality that is so 'in-your-face' in life that it largely goes un-noticed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Superb RARE footage - AWFUL quality sound / picture, 2 July 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This DVD contains fantastic footage of the best (known) poets from the 80's - highlights for me were Adrian Mitchell and his daughter - so powerfull! Adrian Henri and John Cooper Clarke (of course) - Benjamin Zephaniah and Jules - the latter making her only surviving recorded performance (to my knowledge - if anyone knows of anything else by her still obtainable please post a 'comment' here and let me know - PLEAEAEAEASE:)
The only downside is the sound/picture quality which are both terrible and serves to remind us how the technology of video has improved so immensely in the last couple of decades. Though this poor quality reproductiuon is very disappointing and irritating THIS DVD IS A MUST BUY for any fan of any of the poets herein as there's now't else around and the quality of their poetry is unsurpassed in relevance for anyone who lived through the 80's in Britain or anyone who wants to know the reality of it from a poets perspective.

4.0 out of 5 stars Musicians & Performance: BRILLIANT! Production: NOT!, 28 April 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This was evidently another great gig by Patti 'and her band' - they are all well on form, tight and as professional as ever whilst Patti still seems able to retain her unique raw edginess that defines her style / persona. BRILLIANT!

The one thing that lets this dvd down is the recording levels - reminiscent of the old tape recorders in the 1980's when a loud bit happens and the automatic recording level plumets momentarily to an annoyingly quieter level. So what should be an extra loud bit is turned into an extra quiet bit! This is ridiculous here considering this concert was recorded in 2010! I thought the techno geeks might have got this basic fundamental 'detail' right in this day and age!

That said, this defect in the recording sound levels is mainly on the first couple of tracks, so it's well worth sticking with it for the remainder of the gig - which is truly awesome!

IT IS STILL WELL WELL WELL WORTH BUYING THIS DVD!

The picture quality, camera angles & editing is excellent, only being very slightly spoiled by the title of each song being sprawled across the screen in an overly BIG picture obscuring banner for a few seconds too long at the start of each track.

Tracks: space monkey, free money, play with fire, ghost dance, my blakean year, beneath the southern cross, we three, people who died, dancing barefoot, people have the power, wing, gloria.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE BEST FOLK ALBUM FOR YEARS, 10 Mar. 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Handmade Life (Audio CD)
I'd never heard of Chris Wood before his BBC folk awards nomination and seeing him perform 'hollow point' there.
I was so blown away by the understated power of his lyrics and tentatively tenderly precise acoustic guitar that I immediately bought this album half expecting that track to be the best one on it. I was and still am in total awe to find it was just one of several such brilliant songs therein.

'The Grand Correction' is my absolute favourite track though and quite possibly the best folk song I've ever heard! I MEAN EVER! It's SO good!

This man is a poet of the highest order with true insight, a precise ability to express it and is completely 'right-on' in his observations and sentiment! This song touched my demoralised, pecimistic-recession blighted spirit and lifted me right up & filled me with new strength and a reinvigorated belief in human-kind - reassuring me that I'm not the only one to feel like this!

And the music, the arrangements, the instrumentation on all tracks is simply brilliant and ouzes authenticity!

Buy this & 'Let The Grand Correction Commence!'

5.0 out of 5 stars Super-Psych-Rock-Ambience, 8 Jan. 2011
This review is from: Time actor (Audio CD)
This is a superb collaboration between Klaus Schulze (synth man) and Arthur Brown, who sings/speaks on all the original tracks (the last one's a 'bonus' track not originally on the album and lacks the god of hellfire).

Think; Gong/Tangerine Dream/Hawkwind and your'e in the right headspace.

Try to get the CD tho - sounds loads better than squished mp3's! Klaus obviously put so much effort into the multi layering and depth of the synths, it seems a shame to 'one-dimensionalize' them with mp3 compresson!

Added 04.08.2011: - All the above still applies but having just got the new remastered edition IT'S EVEN BETTER!!!
EXTREMELY WELL RE-MASTERED!

4.0 out of 5 stars Get it 4 "MY WALL", 10 Nov. 2010
This review is from: White 1 (Audio CD)
I got this for 'My Wall' as I'm into Julian Cope and it was so worth it!

An awesome track - the Arch Drude is poetic and dark in equal measure. As always a superb lyricist.
Only problem I have is that once he's finnished the track goes on and on and on for toooooo long - just like rest of the album:

BORING!

BLIMEY - PASS THE RAZOR BLADES MAN!

This is truly superb!
A great big poem written and recited by Penny Rimbaud (ex drummer/lyricist with anarcho-punk band CRASS) with a great big backing track by the British chamber choir doing Samuel Berber's Agnus Dei + POWERFUL!

5.0 out of 5 stars How? = WOW!, 9 Nov. 2010
This review is from: Penny Rimbaud's How? (Audio CD)
WOW!
This was a HUGE surprise of the EXTREMELY PLEASANT kind!
Having been a 'fan' (for want of a more accurately descriptive word) of CRASS since the 80's, I was not expecting this from Penny, (then drummer/lyricist of CRASS).
This is lyricly a genuine MASTER-PEACE!
Extremely POWERFUL and INTELLIGENT - it certainly get's the old addrenalin and the old grey matter moving!
A FULL-ON poetic rant of the highest order!
This sit's nicely alongside my 2 Patrick Jones CD's, especially 'Tongues For A Stammering Time' (you've gotta check that out!).
Penny Is accompanied by evocative and SUPERB sax on 'Howl' which definately adds another dimension to the atmosphere of the whole! Although this is primarily a 'spoken word' piece it does have a pervasive rhythm and assimilating cadence which carries you along like a rollercoaster!
As you'd expect from Penny, he takes NO PRISONERS - and rightly so!
(((Check out Penny's 'Oh America' CD too - if you can find it - that is simillarly BRILLIANT)))

5.0 out of 5 stars MY FAVOURITE ALBUM OF ALL TIME - JUST GOT BETTER!, 6 Nov. 2010
This review is from: Give And Take (Audio CD)
I JUST GOT THIS AND IT IS TRULY SUPERB!

I already had the other cd version but this knocks the spots of it by a mile!

FANTASTIC to hear the 'bonus' tracks again after SO LONG - Especially 'ADDICTED' - sounding even better than it used to on vinyl - hard as that is to beleive!

If you've never heard this album before and like gong/hawkwind/arthur brown etc - (you know where I'm coming from?) but always wished they were a bit more 'PUNKED UP!' this baby is for you!

In a nutshel it's like the best elements of all these but with an injection of CRASS/ZOUNDS style Anarchia!

Let's go!!!
