4.0 out of 5 stars The message almost overwhelmed the story, 29 May 2013

This book was as good as Anne Perry's other Pitt novels but I can't help feeling that it could have been better with a lighter touch.Perry does rather tend to beat her reader over the head with the particular message that she is trying to get over , this time the evil of rape .The attitudes of her charactars was much more that of today's metropolitan liberals rather than the Victorian middle class and didn't sit well with some of them.Parents didn't discuss these matters with their children so openly in the 20th century , let alone the 19th .Having said that the charactarisation was as good as ever and the plot full of twists and turns although the ending seemed a little rushed. It was still a darn good read.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good first attempt, 2 April 2013

On the whole I enjoyed this book , the charactars were well portrayed and the story moves along at a fair pace but it did seemed a little stilted at times - maybe the result of having two different authors. As someone who lives near to Granada I was interested in how the city was portrayed but I found that aspect the most disappointing .The authors were so keen to inject local colour into it that they overdid the naming of the streets , buildings , bars etc which sometimes got in the way of the story telling and it turned into more of a travel guide at times .Despite this over enthusiasm though it was still a good read.

If you want a perfume that smells like honeysuckle steer clear of this product. It is awful , it smells like a cheap chemical toilet cleaner.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not one of his best but still enjoyable, 18 April 2012

I am a great fan of this series but was a touch disappointed with this latest offering. The author seems to be loosing his historical accuracy a little , especially with the dialogue , a couple of times I found myself thinking ®they just would not have said that at the time ®.Nor does the Sandy sub plot seem to gel with the main action .However , despite playing fast and loose with the geography of Lincolnshire the main plot and well - loved characars are still as good as ever.

2.0 out of 5 stars A poor Christie rehash, 22 Jan 2012
I have loved all the previous John Rawlings book but this one was a big disapointment , it had the feel of a pot boiler churned out to a formula with a story line shamelessly pinched from Murder on the Orient Express. It lacked the sparkle and style of the previous books.I only hope that this was a one off abberation and that Deryn gets back on form with the next in the series.

Betrayal at Lisson Grove
Betrayal at Lisson Grove
by Anne Perry
Edition: Paperback
Price: £7.48

4.0 out of 5 stars Back on form, 22 Aug 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
After a shaky performance in her previous Pitt novel , Anne Perry is back on form with this one with good charactarisation and tight plotting .It was easy to spot the villain early on in the story but nonetheless was a very enjoyable read. The only downside was the ending which seemed to be quite rushed and the story seemed cut off rather too quickly , as if the author had grown tired of it and was anxious to get it on it's way to the publisher.

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, 4 Jun 2011

What a waste of money! I was expecting a multi - layered historical novel , what I got was a poor replica of a Mills and Boon romance.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, 24 July 2009
I am a huge fan of Anne Perry's Pitt series but was deeply disappointed with her latest work. The scenario is just so far fetched and unbelievable and full of obvious flaws - where did they find all the bllod to put into the port bottles smuggled into the Palace and wouldn't it have clotted too much to be unusable by the time they needed it?

My irritation was compounded by having the charactars examine every nuance of their predicament , usually a paragraph's worth or more of narrative , in the split second between thinking and speaking.Normal people just don't behave like that.

The only bright point was the expanding of Gracie's charactar who is emerging as a much more intersting and rounded person which hopefully Perry will continue to do in future books.
