5.0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT, IN-DEPTH, FUN, 12 Nov. 2013
An excellent 6th volume to the author's current volumes 1-5 of the Madinah Arabic Reader Series. With fun-filled artwork and illustrations, use of large fonts and generous spacing, use of various typographical devises, A4 size, coloured pages, fully vowelled words, and a wealth of knowledge - all contribute to reading this 6th volume with ease, pleasure, and enjoyment of Arabic.

The exhaustive pages of Arabic vocabulary in Volume 6 - both classical and modern Arabic - are greatly beneficial and spare the student of hours of searching for word meanings in the dictionaries.

Full credit to the author for the diligent hard work put in, culminating in this brilliant course for non-natives to master Arabic. See volumes 1-5 here at Amazon.

Madinah Arabic Reader Book 4
Madinah Arabic Reader Book 4

Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars VIBRANT & EXCELLENT, 23 Aug. 2013
It is very rewarding to know this course is used in schools and colleges in many parts of the world.

Though the course title says "for children", the course is equally suited in my opinion for adults because an adult needs colours, illustrations, large print, fun and vibrancy - such as I found in this course - to learn and master a foreign language.

I find this course is vibrant and excellent for non-natives of Arabic. It teaches classical and modern Arabic in clear, logical steps and covers an extensive amount. It is beautifully produced. Pages are filled with fun, colourful pictures to aid understanding rules, examples, vocabulary, and lexical and grammatical elements.

I thoroughly enjoyed the copious exercises which are filled with variety and creativity. The conversations are easy and clear to understand and contain the grammar rules learnt in the lesson in an applied and 'every-day' way.

I also appreciate the author's exceptional qualifications which gives me confidence that I have found one of the best teachers for non-Arabs: Dr. V. Abdur Rahim (author) is a Scholar of Arabic who specialises in teaching Arabic to non-natives. He has been teaching Arabic to non-natives for 50 years. He was formerly Professor of Arabic for 30 years at the Islaamic University, Madinah. He has MPhil and PhD degrees in Arabic Philology from the University of al-Azhar (Cairo, Egypt), and majored in English Literature and Language. He is also an expert of European languages. Knowing all this is very rewarding.

Arabic Course for English Speaking Students: v. 1: Originally Devised and Taught at Madinah Islamic University
Arabic Course for English Speaking Students: v. 1: Originally Devised and Taught at Madinah Islamic University
by V. Abdur Rahim
Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars A WORLD-RENOWNED COURSE. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT, 22 May 2012
I have finished the course and found it outstanding, a "must buy". This course is world-renowed, is used in schools, colleges and universities in many parts of the world, and the back cover says it successfully helps acquire an understanding of hundreds of Qur'aanic passages, Hadiiths, poetry, parables, classical and modern Arabic texts etc. I fully agree.

NOTICEABLE FEATURES OF THE COURSE IN MY OPINION:

* Written in an easy, step-by-step format
* Explanations are clear, in polished English and Arabic
* Material is meticulously well-structured and logically organised
* Covers an extensive amount of the Arabic Sciences
* Works on the weighty principle that you learn the fundamentals before learning the details
* You learn what is easy before what is more challenging
* Lessons connect to each other: what is previously learnt, is revised by blending material into new points being taught
* Copious, creative exercises give ample drilling in of material

A SIGNIFICANT ATTRACTION FOR ME:

One significant attraction for me is that the author is not an ordinary teacher but a Scholar of Arabic who is also an expert of foreign languages, and speaks English fluently. He obtained his MPhil and PhD degrees in Arabic Philology from the renowned University of Al-Azhar (Cairo, Egypt) and also majored in English Language and Literature. The author was formerly Professor of Arabic Philology for 30 years at the world-renowned Islaamic University, Madinah and has taught Arabic to non-Arabs for more than 50 years (yes, more than 50 years!)

This profile is enough for those of us who want the best possible teacher to teach us non-Arabs, the Arabic language.

MY CONCLUSION OF THE ARABIC LANGUAGE:

One finishes the course concluding that Arabic is innocent of all the misconceptions associated with it. It is not a difficult language at all to learn, but very easy, has a very logical lexical and grammatical system, is admired and beautiful. One feels indebted to the author for the diligent hard work put in resulting in an excellent course, doing justice to the Arabic language by teaching it in the right way that shows Arabic's true nature.

FOLLOW-ON-COURSES BY THE AUTHOR:

I have continued to study classical and modern Arabic through this author's many follow-on books and courses and found each one to be excellent with multiple benefits. The Shaykh makes it a point to teach vast aspects of Arabc, in simple language with simple examples, connecting the knowledge he teaches as well as revise the knowledge that students have learnt previously with him. Such teaching methods have greatly paved the way for me to learn advanced Arabic easily, in connected form, which continues to open up greater doors to enjoying and mastering Arabic. One follow-on course here at Amazon by the author is: "Selections From the Glorious Qur'aan - With Lexical and Grammatical Notes."

Finally, you can make contact with this great teacher and Shaykh as he has a website that teaches Arabic to non-native speakers of it. It contains free Arabic language books and courses, free Arabic lessons, Q & As and more. The web address is mentioned in the "book description" of the following book published by Amazon:

Europe Speak Arabic
Europe Speak Arabic

5.0 out of 5 stars FASCINATING CONTENT, WILL ASTONISH EVERY EUROPEAN!, 19 May 2012
This review is from: Europe Speak Arabic (Paperback)
The content fascinated me, the facts astonished me, and the author's profound depth of knowledge of foreign languages - their etymology, phonetic change and semantic development, delighted me. The book is a unique discussion on the massive contribution of the Arabic language in developing and enhancing the world's languages and cultures, with special focus on European languages and cultures and how their rich heritages trace back to the generosity of Arabic in improving Europe and its civilisation.

It will astonish and fascinate every European to discover that many every-day words he/she speaks in his/her mother tongue, are originally Arabic words, which Europe borrowed from Arabic to improve its own languages and communication systems.

The author shows profound respect for other cultures and views, and only discusses those words which European linguists accept have been borrowed from Arabic into European languages.

Though the branches of knowledge discussed are vast and intricate, this book states it is for the lay-person, and I found that exactly true. The author writes the entire book as a spirited dialogue between two charismatic characters named Ahmad and Eric who delve into various academic subjects as well as every-day, ordinary subjects. Ahmad teaches Eric the etymology, phonetic change and semantic development of scores and scores of words, from every European language! One must read it to appreciate the mastery of the author and his knowledge and skill.

"Europe Speaks Arabic" was described by one journalist as "monumental". Here are some extracts from this review taken from a popular magazine:

EXTRACTS FROM THE BOOK REVIEW:

"The title of the book ['Europe Speaks Arabic'] is startling and is meant to startle. The impact of Arabic on European languages had been so vast, so wide-ranging and so enduring and yet subjected to such indifference and had been taken for granted so frustratingly that it needed a scholar of titanic proportions like Dr. V. Abdur Rahim to make the present-day Europeans realize how much they should be indebted to Arabic..."

"The title cover of the book carries a photograph of a bridge in London, suggesting that Arabic is a bridge between East and West..."

"...The vast erudition of the author is reflected in ([the numerous quotations given in the book]. Their appropriateness is a matter of marvel."

"The diversity of the branches of learning from which passages are taken out for illustration, leaves the reader awe-struck. The learned Doctor, has drawn on the books he read as a student of the Intermediate class and of the BA (Hons.) Degree course. There are certain books quoted which are centuries old. The quotations are given in their original spelling without modernising them. A reflection on the scale of hard work put into the collection of the extracts and the number of years spent in the collection overwhelms a grateful reader..."

"The author says, `Only words recognized by European linguists as borrowings from Arabic, and mentioned in reputed dictionaries, are included in this book.' This line of abundant caution makes the book authoritative and authentic..."

"...the book...contains profoundly philosophical observations on language per se."

"...book is spiced with pun, witticism, and a sense of humour...

"...The quality of the book can be summed up in two phrases taken from the book itself: "concentrated erudition" (p.14) and "excellent exposition" (p.175).

"...The book is monumental. It is a book on the civilizing influence of Arabic which India and the world need to know".

AT-TIBYAN - Easy Way to Quranic Reading
AT-TIBYAN - Easy Way to Quranic Reading
by Dr. V. Abdur Rahim
Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars BRILLIANT, LEARNING TIME IS CONSIDERABLY REDUCED, 19 May 2012
A brilliant course which I thoroughly enjoyed. The course is geared for English-speakers and adopts an unconventional teaching approach based on advanced teaching principles and scientific co-ordinated learning. It utilises speech-sounds common to Arabic and English, then moves to sounds that are similar in both languages, then to those that are different. I found these techniques excellent and very confidence-boosting since English is made to serve as a "bridge" by which we reach the Arabic "equivalent" sound very easily. We start with sounds in our own language through which we make the transition to the Arabic speech sound. It is very effective in pinpointing the point of articulation.

Another method used is one learns the sounds of the letters before their names. This paves the way for correct pronunciation and easy recollection since learning through sounds first, is easier than learning written names.

There are exercises to drill in and practice what is learnt and an audio CD that accompanies the book which is beautifully produced, high-quality sound, classic pronunciation of Arabic and a pleasure to follow.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Full credit to the author, a Scholar of Arabic, with 50 years teaching experience, teaching Arabic to non-Arabs. The Shaykh Dr. Abdur Rahim is also an expert in foreign languages and has used his expertise of the etymology of European languages to produce this course as well as a host of Arabic language books and courses for non-natives. Such courses are successsfully used throughout the world and precisely cater for the needs of non-natives of Arabic. Knowing this is very rewarding.

FOLLOW-ON COURSES OF THE AUTHOR:

I recommend everyone to continue learning Arabic through this Shaykh's books and courses (as I have done). After "At-Tibyaan" is the following course for learning advanced classical and modern Arabic:

"Arabic Course for English-Speaking Students: Originally Devised and Taught at World-Renowned Madinah Islaamic University" 3 Vols.

Selections from the Glorious Qur'an with Lexical and Grammatical Notes
Selections from the Glorious Qur'an with Lexical and Grammatical Notes
by Dr. V. Abdur Rahim
Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars BRILLIANT COURSE, PROFOUND IN CONTENT, 19 May 2012
A brilliant course, profound in depth and content. It follows on from the author's Arabic language course I first did named:

"Arabic Language Course For English-Speaking Students: Originally Devised and Taught at [World-Renowned] Madinah Islaamic University"

"Selections from the Glorious Qur'aan" is meant for those who have graduated from the above named course, or attained proficiency in Arabic equivalent to it.

A series of lessons are taught in the "Selections" course on the grammatical topic of oath and its reply (Qasam and Jawaabu l-Qasam). I especially marvelled at learning this since it is not only a very important topic for students and teachers of Arabic to cover, but one hardly finds any attention, let alone depth, to this subject of Qasam and its Jawaab in most other books by Arabic teachers of non-natives. The author has done an exceptional task of teaching this and the host of other Qur'aanic topics with clear-cut, and copious lexical and grammatical notes for each selected passage from the Qur'aan.

The Shaykh's teaching methods bring the Arabic language to life as it is his practice to bring copious examples from the Qur'aan and Hadiiths to illustrate and drill in material being taught.

Full credit to the author for valuable teaching techniques, and 50 years of teaching experience in teaching non-Arabs, the Arabic language.

Anxious for Amazon to re-stock this.
