John Calvin: A Sixteenth-Century Portrait
John Calvin: A Sixteenth-Century Portrait
by William James Bouwsma
Edition: Paperback
Price: £11.00

2.0 out of 5 stars Sadly disappointing, 18 Feb 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Despite deep research, the conclusions about Calvin's life are those of an unsympathetic biographer. The chapters on Polity and the Church are very good, but the work as a whole is marred by a revisionist approach seeking to assert something novel in order to attract attention. The stones he has quarried from Calvin's sayings may be used by someone else for a more edifying purpose.

Price: £9.29

4.0 out of 5 stars A life of Calvin based on his correspondence, 30 Jan 2012

I would agree with the other review regarding the translation. However, this is a valuable insight based mainly on Calvin's correspondence and, because of this and the author's extensive knowledge of contemporary Geneva,it actually has more depth than Gordon's biography.

Commentaries on the Epistle to the Romans, 15.32-15.42
by T.H.L. Parker
Edition: Hardcover
Price: £23.69

5.0 out of 5 stars A fine study of historical theology, 1 Dec 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a very thorough and insightful study into an important period for Reformation theology. It will doubtless have a limited audience but is an interesting comparison of RC and Protestant exegesis in particular. Parker is a reliable guide in this field.

Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars A fine scholarly contribution., 1 Dec 2011

This review is from: Three French Treatise (Paperback)
This book is useful not only for emphasizing Calvin's important place in advancing the French language in the sixteenth century, but also provides an example of his elegant and incisive writing. The introduction is thorough and a useful small lexicon is provided for students at the end.

5.0 out of 5 stars Look no further., 1 Dec 2011

This is a spectacular performance. Zimmerman's skill is amazing and Bernstein manages to make the VPO sound like the Berliner. It is a powerful yet romantic performance. There may be other fine performances, but this remains unsurpassed.

3.0 out of 5 stars An uneven collection, 28 Nov 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The quality varies from very good to very poor, some stories are not even about Holmes. Some are clearly writers devoted to the Holmes genre, others are not. I was disappointed with this book, it is one of the poorest collections on offer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Karajan at his brilliant best., 26 Nov 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The soloists are in fine form and there are signs that Karajan was enjoying himself. It really is a superb performance, Karajan wielding a mighty combined force of chorus and orchestra into a beautiful harmony. The visual certainly adds to the splendour of the performance and the camera focus is always on the participants.

2.0 out of 5 stars A disappointing book, 25 Nov 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is not a conservative study (cf. page 130 " the proclamation of the myth ") but a rather superficial summary of all of Paul's Epistles, questioning the integrity of Acts and the Pastoral Epistles on the way. Paul is relegated to the level of un-Inspired theologians, although rated above average. Better introductions to Paul were done by F.B. Myer, Alexander Whyte, A.M. Hunter, or C. Swindoll. The serious student should consult H. Ridderbos.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding study, 21 Nov 2011

This is an excellent analysis of Calvin's Institutes, invaluable for the student or those who wish to 'brush up' on Calvin's doctrine. It is well researched and concisely put together without losing meaning or infiltrated by subjectivism.Parker is a reliable guide to Calvin.
