Almost Human - Fan Edition [DVD]
Almost Human - Fan Edition [DVD]
Dvd ~ Tomas Milian

5.0 out of 5 stars what a revelation!, 7 Mar 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
i bought this expecting it to be decent, but it really exceeded my expectations! What a great role for Tomas Milian, he really impresses and is alternately really humourous and scary, all the time a showcase of what a kind of pathetic, cringing individual and his loser friends can achieve when armed with some trusty machine guns. Also another great role for the detective played by Henry Silva. Really, this eclipses most US crime films of the 70's ive seen, and is a must-see for crime genre fans. If i had to decribe the film in terms of well known USA films id describe it as a cross between Mean Streets and Last House on the Left. Go see!

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice stylised spaghetti western, 2 Mar 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Id give this film 3.5 out of 4 stars. It has a great opening sequence, one of the best ive seen, and possibly the greatest villain ive ever seen in a spaghetti western, the fancy dressed, lolling-headed son of the ranch owner, just makes you hate him as soon as he appears on screen! Another nice touch is the chinese supporting actor who keeps reappearing through the movie and dishing out words of wisdom from Confucious. Franco Nero and George Hilton are well cast. Unfortunately the story doesnt live up to the initial promise really, mainly i would put the blame down to the script and directing rather than plot. A nice western from 1966 and some nice moments, heavily stylised so really ticks the spaghetti box, but lacks drama and action. This DVD contains the International dub and the American dub, both which have different voice actors. The chinese guy is unintelligible in the International dub! So no wonder the distributor re-dubbed it for the US market. However, i would rate this movie as a must own for hardcore Spaghetti Western fanatics simply for the movies style.

3.0 out of 5 stars OK low budget tongue in cheek Italian war movie, 2 Mar 2013
This review is from: Inglorious Bastards [DVD] (DVD)
Ok low budget war film, with decent action and explosions. Some nice humour, although sometimes it reminds me a little too much of Police Academy, so if you hate that avoid this. Also some of the actors are pretty annoying (again like Police Academy). A great premise and plot but average script, however it would no doubt have been well thought of in the 70's but now we have gotten used to more sophisticated war movies and it doesnt hold a candle to those. Some weird aspects to the story, like the rascist, murdering member of the group actually winning the girl at the end. eh? Completely unbelievable so dont watch it if youre looking for realism.

Dvd ~ Ernest Borgnine

2.0 out of 5 stars Approach with caution, 1 Mar 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Ive been on a Italo-Western watching binge lately and this has to be the worst one ive seen yet. In fact i would prefer to watch the much-derided "God's Gun" over this. The main problem is the acting, with both Earnest Borgnine and George Hilton being particularly wooden and bad. This is a major problem as they are the leads. It has some decent moments and dialogue but is let down by a pretty bad story and bad acting and directing. Im not sure who the audience are supposed to be rooting for, as George Hiltons gang is pretty unlikeable and so is Borgnines character. I was about to switch it off in mid viewing as it hits a particularly low point around mid-way. If you can make it through to the end there is a absolutely laughable death scene and most unconvincing knife fight ive ever seen. As other people have said, Lucio Fulci was somehow involved in this travesty, i think the cinematography and camerawork is reminiscent of his style, but this is in no way a recommendation. I would put this film on a pretty low down priority for a spaghetti western fans viewing.

3.0 out of 5 stars Big budget exploitation, 15 Feb 2013
I thought this film was ok, certainly as good or better than most of the Spaghetti westerns it is trying to emulate, however it is no Leone picture and has its faults. I am personally not a fan of Christoph Waltz and here he is again with his rambling pretentious dialogue which can only be blamed on Tarantino's writing assuming it was scripted and trying too hard to please internet fanboys. Tarantino was at his best with his initial movies, Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction and Jackie Brown are bona fide classics. However, his initial success seems to have gone to his head and he now funnels all his attentions into making big-budget exploitation movies. The exploitation genre always had an excuse for its bad taste and often bad filmmaking as it was low budget fare which relied on cheap shocks and crass promotional gimmicks to recoup its and the distributors costs. Tarantino does not have this excuse and is capable of maing so much better movies. Why not try to ape Leone westerns instead of down-market exploitation films? A mystery which only Tarantino can answer - however this is a decent exploitation film but not a great piece of cinema so treat it as such.

Mighty Thor, The: Everything Burns
Mighty Thor, The: Everything Burns
by Matt Fraction
Edition: Paperback
Price: 11.99

3.0 out of 5 stars Convoluted, 26 Jan 2013
Having read through this once, i found the plot pretty convoluted, unclear and confusing at times. The story, while having some nice aspects, probably would have benefited from less issues. Editorial inteference may have caused the story to be stretched to fit a required number of issues, at least that how it seemed to me. The story progressively gets better, though i found the first few issues pretty tedious. It has nice artwork generally and the ending is fairly satisfying and neatly ties together all the loose threads. Probably worth a read for fans of Gillen's Journey into Mystery (which includes me, i didnt read any of Fraction's Thor which may be why i was confused at times) but not as good as rest of the run IMO. INCLUDES MIGHTY THOR #18-22 AND JOURNEY INTO MYSTERY #642-645.

5.0 out of 5 stars worth it, 15 Jan 2013
This review is from: Minimum Carnage (Paperback)
I really liked this mini event, tieing into both the Venom and Scarlet Spider series. A story in 6 parts, it includes Venom #26-27, Scarlet Spider #10-11, and the two bookend one shots, Minimum Carnage Alpha and Minimum Carnage Omega. Great story, involving Venom and Scarlet Spider going into the microverse to try and stop Carnage from wreaking havoc there. A nice, classic old Marvel feel. Fans of Maximum Carnage and Symbiote Wars stories of the 1990's will love it.

3.0 out of 5 stars flawed, 13 Jan 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I believe the premise for this book was flawed. like another reviewer has said, it is best looked as an art book rather than a book for reading. To help the reader, they could have had 2 sections, 1 for complete stories, and another for the various hit & miss pages and episodes that Bolland did. Also, i do believe a nice recolouring job would have given this book more of a kick. the way the book is, in sequence of publication, i suppose the benefit is you can watch Bollands work change over time but you never know if when you start reading a story you are even going to get an ending. also, some of the earliar episodes have double page spreads where speech bubbles are lost in the books gutter due to tight binding. overall, average 3 stars. nice to see the artwork in oversized format but not exactly a must purchase due to the flaws.

1.0 out of 5 stars Huge disappointment - poorly designed book, 21 Dec 2012
I bought this expecting it to be a complete covers collection, as this series has had a lot of rare variants issued. Instead, a lot of the best covers are not featured. At best, the covers shown all have a white border around them reducing the size, there are a lot of pages wasted with pointless text and detail shots of things which dont really warrant a closer look. Some average covers are reproduced mutliple times and then better ones are inexplicably reduced to not much better than thumbnails with a lot of blank unused space around them. I would have been made happy to just have seen a complete collection of full page covers with no text or other frills at all. Ugh! If you want to see how to do a perfect art book take a look at IDW'S Dave Stevens Stories and Covers. A disappointment indeed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended, 20 Dec 2012

Great book - page after page of breathtaking artwork by the master of 80's pin up art. Multiple variations of each drawing, showing pencil layouts and finished inks seperately, and frequently there is additional blown up detail shots. A wealth of Stevens' 80's indie covers are represented from Eclipse, Pacific and the like, along with rare inked comic book pages featuring Tarzan, Star Wars as well as some lesser known characters. If this book was bigger size, it'd be considered an 'Artists edition' with a considerably larger price tag. As it is, its still oversized and great value. Dave Stevens fans will lap it up, non fans are sure to become fans after seeing this book.
