4.0 out of 5 stars Very good Eurocrime, if a little cheesy at times, 3 April 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This was better than i expected. It has some cheesy moments (the kung-fu assassins scene especially) and flags a little midway, but has a great first third and great speedboat chase finale. If you have seen either of Umberto Lenzi's "The Cynic, The Rat and The Fist" or "Rome Armed to the Teeth" you'll know what to expect, with the usual cheesy and humorous moments. This one has no cop character, it is a straight up Boss vs Boss battle. Both Henry Silva and the German actor in the leads are great. This is a joint Italian-German production and is set in Hamburg. The plot revolves around Henry Silva's character (of Sicilian origin and jetting in from USA with his family) setting up shop in Hamburg and trying to muscle in on the existing boss' territory. There is a novel and interesting sub-plot regarding the son and daughter of the 2 bosses falling in love and dating while the gang war is going on in the background. Some nice explosions and usual gunfights. Otherwise quite light on gore and violence but still a good film. This is an expensive 2 disc set which has both the German and Italian cuts of the film. Only the German cut has English options (audio/ subtitles) the Italian cut is not English friendly. The cast interviews in the extras are subtitled. I would rate this is essential viewing for fans of Eurocrime, especially if you enjoy the previously mentioned Lenzi films, as i feel this film is quite similar in tone and has a similar cheese-factor. The quality of the transfer is very nice in 1:78 widescreen. The English dub has some noise present and is only in mono but is still very watchable. A nice addition to my collection.

One of the pages in this book has been duplicated so one story is missing the final page. Thie affects page 74 and 84. Other than that, great book with excellent reproduction quality.

EDIT - I BELIEVE THIS DOES NOT AFFECT THE NEW PRINTINGS

The Violent Professionals [DVD]
The Violent Professionals [DVD]
Dvd ~ Luc Merenda

3.0 out of 5 stars average, 27 Mar 2013
Have to agree that this is an average film, Merenda in the lead playing a big factor in my non enthusiasm. He just doesnt look like a tough and gritty cop kind of guy, too much of a ponce and he always seems to be half smirking and makes you want to punch him! Other than that, its decent enough if you like these sorts of films though plot gets confusing, the villains seem to have some kind of political motive thats never properly explained. Maybe i need to know more about Italian political history to understand this aspect. The shot on the cover comes from a very small section in the film where the villains rob a bank, this film is not a film about the activities of a criminal gang where you follow them about on various "jobs" it is the typical cop undercover infiltrating the gang type of movie, lots of car chases and fist fights rather than gunplay. This film seems kind of dated now, unlike the best Italian crime films of this era which still seem modern and fresh.

This is a mst see for 1970's Italian crime movie fans. Thogh not as good as "Almost Human" its still pretty great. The crooks are youung, violent, dangerous and highly unpredictable! Anybody can get it in this movie and usually they do! Also, what a babe playing one of the crooks reluctant girlfriend! Some decent actors in the lead roles, though Milian is wasted as the detective on their trail. As usual for Italian crime movies, a pretty sobering ending. I think the movie could have been improved with a better score. One aspect i noticed was an almost complete lack of music during the film. Otherwise highly recommended.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great movie - transfer on DVD looks like bootleg, 24 Mar 2013

This review is from: Oasis Of Fear [1971] [DVD] (DVD)
I wanted to echo the previous comments about the quality of the transfer. Its pretty bad-itd be acceptable for a downloaded bootleg but for a DVD release its pretty poor, mainly due to lack of clarity and looking more like a VHS copy of a copy. Except for that, what a great film. Kind of like an ode to the late 60's and free love and youthful rebellion, with a great soundtrack, and mixed with a suspense thriller. I always like Umberto Lenzi films because he casts good, likeable actors in the leads which makes his films very watchable. His style of filmmaking is also direct and tight which benefits this movie also. Unexpected plot developments make for a tense ride and a fitting ending for the youthful rebels.

1.0 out of 5 stars Tedious, 23 Mar 2013

Avoid this one - i have seen a lot of the 70's italian cannibal movies and this is abosolutely the worst one ive seen. Its boring - long segments of soft, soft sex scenes and of a bunch of middle class idiots trekking through the jungle and when the gore happens its not that great either. Avoid this even if youre a fan of these movies as there is basically nothing much to recommend it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good movie, 22 Mar 2013

I liked this quite a bit, attractive actresses, nice soundtrack from Bruno Nicolai, well shot on location and pretty well acted. Has a nice 60's/70's exploitation feel.the cheesiness comes from the wardens who are pretty OTT. There is nothing especially graphic in the Directors cut (which doesnt have the XXX material) though there is a closeup of a live snake being stabbed which is pretty cruel and may not go down too well nowadays. The XXX cut is also on the disc but in French and without English subs. Overall i liked the story but it couldve had a more upbeat ending which would have been better. Also some may accuse it of lacking action but the good cast make up for this IMO. Check it out if youre a fan of classic exploitation.

3.0 out of 5 stars a different Fulci movie and a different Western, 17 Mar 2013
Four of the Apocalypse is quite an experimental film. The actual movie is not what youd expect from the title, which conjures up images of four terrible riders of vengeance on horseback intent on death and killing. The story revolves around 4 unwilling (initially) accomplices who find themselves the only ones left alive in a particularly sinful (gambling, prostitution etc)frontier town after a violent massace (instigated by the loacl lawman to cleanse it of its "vermin"). The 4 characters are a cross section of such a society, a prostitute, a drunk, a professional gambler amd a well, loony. They set off on a journey across the American wilderness to find a new town in which to settle. On their way they encounter a bandit played by Tomas Milian, their interaction is the core of the story but Milian is not actually in it for that long. This is not a "blood soaked western" as it says on the box and is not especially violent. There is a scene of Chaco the bandit flaying a piece of skin from a captured lawmans side, but other than that the violence is not very graphic. My opinion Fulci was going for a Leone type of vibe mixed with psychedelia, much of the film is pretty sedate. There is kind of a warmth to the characters relationships in the film, it would have benefited from better actors in the lead roles, apart from Milian who is as usual very good. It is not especially successful in what it is trying to achieve, so i award it an average 3 stars, a nice try and certainly a different kind of Western than most spaghettis.

Rider On The Rain [DVD]
Rider On The Rain [DVD]
Dvd ~ Charles Bronson
Price: £7.80

5.0 out of 5 stars A European crime film with unusually warm soft centre!, 12 Mar 2013
This review is from: Rider On The Rain [DVD] (DVD)
This film comes highly recommended. Ignore the cover art, as this is not a Bronson action flick, although he does have a few minutes of action toward the end. Rather, it is a murder suspense thriller, or a warm, character driven romance film. I say this as it has an unusually warm, romantic and funny interplay between the lead characters. It has a great plot and script, and is well directed and shot. The only downside is it is a touch overlong i feel, but this is a minor quibble. I would highly recommend this movie to fans of strong character-driven films and lovers of 60's and 70's European crime genre films, as well as Euro films in general and lovers of warm, romantic stories. Yes, it is a crime movie with an unusually warm, gooey and soft heart at the centre!

5.0 out of 5 stars what a revelation!, 7 Mar 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
i bought this expecting it to be decent, but it really exceeded my expectations! What a great role for Tomas Milian, he really impresses and is alternately really humourous and scary, all the time a showcase of what a kind of pathetic, cringing individual and his loser friends can achieve when armed with some trusty machine guns. Also another great role for the detective played by Henry Silva. Really, this eclipses most US crime films of the 70's ive seen, and is a must-see for crime genre fans. If i had to decribe the film in terms of well known USA films id describe it as a cross between Mean Streets and Last House on the Left. Go see!
