As a life-long Nick Cage's fan, I couldn't help buying this DVD, but did so in hope rather than expectation.
The film continues the downwards trend of the likeable and very talented actor's decline. During the last ten years or so, and apart from the few interesting movies he has made, there really has been nothing but poor script choices and badly made movies. A great pity.

What with ` Her`,` Under the skin` and this movie, Scarlett Johansson seems to have become the actor to go to for the weird or unusual parts.
If this has been a deliberate career choice , then only the future will tell whether it has been a wise or a foolish move to do so.
I felt a bit of a let down after seeing the movie because, unfortunately, my expectations had been somewhat high, and I found the story not much to my liking, and the acting was far from excellent . I specifically felt sad for the great Morgan Freeman, who had a rather weak part composed of a few short scenes . An average movie, according to my own personal taste.

A terrific movie with considerable originality.
The director is obviously talented and should have a promising future in film-making. Both the main leads were excellent.
Highly recommended.

The Movie, starring Alan Ladd and Olivia De Havilland and directed by the excellent Michael Curtiz, is very good and quite entertaining, but the quality of the video transfer is appalling. I found it both irritating and distracting.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent supernatural thriller, 8 July 2011

The Rite (2011)

I have recently purchased this DVD and have enjoyed the story very much. I have decided to write this review right away and without reference to other reviews, as I wanted to make sure that my opinions are not influenced, directly or otherwise, by any other input.
As a supernatural horror, the film is excellent, and the reason is, quite simply, due to the remarkable coincidence of all the ingredients in the making of the movie, (including the directing, the script, the background music, the acting, the cinematography and the production values) having, without exception, contributed to its impact as an exciting cinematic piece . Its ultimate success, however, is largely due to the wonderful acting of the great Anthony Hopkins. It simply goes to demonstrate how a small investment by the producers in the services of a brilliant actor, can be such a rewarding experience for all concerned.
I enjoyed it greatly, and should you choose to view the DVD, I certainly hope you will too.

Highwaymen (2004)

A movie about mayhem on the highways that might not be to every one's taste. But I have watched the dvd three times, so far, and found that I had appreciated the film a bit more after each viewing

The story is about James Rennie Cray, or Rennie, for short, (Jim Caviezel,) who is on a revenge mission seeking the psychopathic killer, known as Fargo (Colm Feore,) who deliberately and savagely ran down his wife two years ago. Fargo has been brutally killing women, with his powerfully re-structured 1972 Eldorado, on the roads all over the country, and police forces have been quite unaware of his existence. His latest road victims have been: Alex Farrow (Andrea Roth,) and Ray Boone (Gordon Currie), both of whom had been friends of Molly's (Rhona Mitra) who, herself, now faces certain death by the relentess road killer. Molly, who had also lost both parents in a road accident, is befriended by Rennie. The two, hindered and assisted by a state traffic investigator named Macklin (Frankie Faison,) and with Molly as bait, attempt to trap a cleverly elusive killer.

The 80 minutes duration of the movie pass ever so quickly, and it is action all the way.

White Palace (1990)

Nora Baker (Susan Sarandon) is a 43 years old waitress working at a hamburger joint called "The White Palace" and Max Baron (James Spader) is a successful 27 years old advertising executive. The film shows how they accidentally meet and how their relationship develops. I had, however, a rather strange feeling, as the film went on, that the relationship was doomed: As individuals, they both had to carry their own emotional baggage and, beside the relatively unimportant age difference, they led distinctively contrasting lifestyles, and had very different backgrounds. For me the movie would have made a more realistic sense, had it ended differently. But the film ending is pure Hollywood.

The director, Luis Mandoki, did a decent job in adapting Glenn Savan's novel to the screen, while the two leads were rather good. Sarandon was nominated for a Golden Globe Award (1991), but won the London Critics Circle Film Award (1992) for her portrayal of Nora. The Movie grossed $ 17,487,531 in the US.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pacino and Williams at Their Best, 8 April 2011

Insomnia (2002)

Two LAPD'S homicide detectives, the senior and decorated Will Dormer (Al Pacino) and the relatively less-experienced Hap Eckhart (Martin Donovan) are on their way to a remote little town in Alaska to investigate the brutal murder of a young woman. Both have to remain without sleep for much of their stay because of the 24 -hour day light there.

They are currently being investigated by their Internal Affaires division on possible charges of evidence tampering in a previous case. Much to Dormer's chagrin, Hap, who does not seem to have too much to worry about from the investigation, has told an angry Dormer that he had agreed to cut a deal with IA. On arrival, the two detectives are met by detective Ellie Burr (Hilary Swank,) and a couple of her colleagues from the local police service. In their first attempt to apprehend a suspect, who turns out to be the real killer: a local novelist known as Walter Finch (a chillingly - subtle portrayal by Robin Williams,) Dormer accidentally shoots his friend, whose dying words suggest that Dormer had shot him on purpose.

Finch, who saw the accidental killing, contacts Dormer, and a psychological game of cat and mouse between the two protagonists ensues, except it is difficult to know who is the cat and who is the mouse. Dormer, weary, sleep-deprived and guilt-ridden over his partner's death, is a good policeman who is smart and capable, while Finch, as portrayed by the excellent Williams, is a murderously clever and an unstable killer. It is a fight that neither can afford to lose nor can be sure of winning.

The direction, by the excellent Christopher Nolan, is first-class, and the two leads are brilliant. Hilary Swank shows her star quality in the role of an idealist detective, and there is a small part for Maura Tierney (of ER fame,) as motel owner/manager, Rachel Clement.
