What would you do if you had the chance to go back and change one moment of your life?

Well, that's the conundrum facing Zach as he goes back to his Alma mater to judge a short film competition in which his younger self is competing. That he doesn't go back in time and can interact with young Zach - in fact at one point sleep with him which raises all sorts of metaphysical issues - is one of the movies most confusing aspects. However, that confusion is good as it is is shared with the old Zach (excellently played by Charlie David)and as his disbelief turns to understanding and finally acceptance, we take that ride with him all the way.

Timo Descamps makes an awesome job of being the bad guy, in every sense and Richard Harmon is just brilliant as the brooding, almost emo, that is the young Zach with all the angst that this entails.

Special mention must go to Sean Paul Lockhart who proved that he is a real actor in this movie and put in a superb performance as the troubled Chris Wachowsky, just a normal (if gorgeous) boy in love.

Two smaller but vital characters to mention - Mrs. Blossom @ Old Man Welds - who guide Zach through his time.

My one criticism was the role of the father. Although a major influence in Zach's life, I didn't feel we saw enough of him and the relationship he had with his son, particularly after the death of Zach's mother.

An extremely well made film that kept me hooked from start to finish and will be watched again soon.

BEST GAY LOVE STORIES: Summer Flings
BEST GAY LOVE STORIES: Summer Flings
by Brad Nichols
Edition: Paperback

1.0 out of 5 stars One of the worst books I have ever read!, 27 Nov. 2012
The problem with the short story format is that there is rarely time to get to know the characters properly and due to the time/space limitations situations have to work in such a way that the element of surprise is often missing. Some authors manage to get over these issues but, and this is to the credit of the compiler of this book, none of the authors here even made an attempt to overcome the problems of the short story. Amazing coincidences turn up at every corner, nobody has any issue with anyone being gay and for virtually every story, the happy ending is telegraphed in the first couple of paragraphs.

If it was so bad, then why, you may ask, did I read it all the way through? Honestly, there was a sense of hope closely followed by desperation that I would find a story I enjoyed with characters I actually cared about. Unfortunately despite my prayers it never occurred.

This is a book to take to some men only beach and read with the cover ostentatiously displayed to show that you are gay, a bit of an intellectual but as they are short stories you have no trouble interrupting your reading if the right boy comes along - a superficial idea that is worthy of a story in this book.

600 Hours of Edward
600 Hours of Edward

Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars An Awesome Surprise, 24 Nov. 2012
This review is from: 600 Hours of Edward (Paperback)
One of my colleagues picked this for our book club meeting and my initial reaction was not that great. The whole premise seemed to shout to me that this was going to be a wrist slitting bore of a book. I couldn't have been more wrong!

Everything about this book from the first to last lines had me completely hooked. The story and writing are simple yet somehow they kept this guy wanting to go on. Edward is one of the best literary characters I have ever encountered. His outlook on life is so lovely and, as someone who shares some of his characteristics, I have to say I would love him as a flat-mate.

The author showed great skill in writing 'first person' and the insight into Edward's mind that this style of writing gave the reader was both fascinating and heart-warming. For me, there were moments of sheer joy and moments of deep sadness - in fact, one part near the end found me sitting in a workman's cafe sniffling back the sobs as I read it.

A truly awesome read that I look forward to returning too soon.
