2.0 out of 5 stars Disappoiinting - awful backing, 10 May 2015

Some great trumpet playing but horrible backing reduced much of this to "musak". Deeply disappointing

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential Reading, 10 May 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Essential reading for anyone involved in education, this book demolishes much of the tosh that passes as educational theory in the UK. Shoudl be mandatory reading for all teachers and OFSTED inspectors.

2.0 out of 5 stars I expected much better from this book, 10 May 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Very disappointing.
I expected much better from this book. Firstly, it is poorly produced, large print (not much content per page) and abysmal illustrations e.g. Mind Maps that I found illegible.
Secondly, it repeats a number of myths that have been well-refuted - e.g. "93% of communication is non-verbal" and spurious assertion that because Mind Maps have a superficial resemblance to neural network diagrams, this somehow "links into" brain functioning- but it doesn't look into the real evidence of the effectiveness of Mind Maps. It's very superficial.
Thirdly some of the applications for Mind Maps it cites, especially for Project Managers, are useless, just being rehashes of established PM techniques like Work Breakdown structures.
I DO use Mind Maps myself and find them useful; this book, however, didn't add to my knowledge greatly.

Charity & Philanthropy For Dummies
Charity & Philanthropy For Dummies
by John Werner Kluge
Edition: Paperback
Price: £16.54

3.0 out of 5 stars An OK "dummies" guide, 22 Mar. 2015
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
An OK "dummies" guide - clearly written and easy to read, but seems to spend a lot of time stating the obvious. I don't really learn much from it

Live In Germany - Green Leaves & Blue Notes Tour
Live In Germany - Green Leaves & Blue Notes Tour
Offered by Fulfillment Express
Price: £10.35

3.0 out of 5 stars OK but no more, 18 Mar. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I bought this on the strength of Chuck Leavell's sterling work backing Clapton & the Stones, but I was rather disappointed by it. Fine piano playing, of course, but after a few plays I passed the CD on. Not bad, but nothing outstanding

It's also far too long - distilling it into one CD would be a great improvement.

Brain Rules, Updated and Expanded
Brain Rules, Updated and Expanded
by John Medina
Edition: Paperback
Price: £8.79

3.0 out of 5 stars Some good material but curiously dull, 18 Mar. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This book does what it promises to do, i.e. distills a lot of psychological / neurological research relevant to education & training into a digestible form for teachers, trainers, and anyone interested in improving their own brain usage.

One of the curious things about it is that although it preaches he value of visuals to get learning across, the book relies on a lot of text and very little else - you have to look at the brain rules website, or related YouTube videos, for anything remotely visual.

Problem Solving 101: A simple book for smart people: A Simple Guide for Smart People
by Ken Watanabe
Edition: Hardcover
Price: £10.68

5.0 out of 5 stars I wish I'd read a book like this years ago!, 18 Mar. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a very short book with quite a few illustrations, but it's about quality not quantity. True,, the 3 examples used in the book are, on the face of it, childishly simple but for me that's part of the way the book makes its point - even simple things like how a schoolboy could raise $500 in a few months, or how a school band could get a good audience for a free concert, can be done well or badly, and problem-solving tools can be effectively used to do them better.

Should be compulsory reading in schools and universities, and for anyone managing projects!

Strike the Father Dead
Strike the Father Dead
by S. H. Burton
Edition: Hardcover

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book but unjustly-forgotten author, 15 Feb. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Strike the Father Dead (Hardcover)
John Wain was a very popular novelist of the 50s & 60s who later won the Booker with "Young Shoulders", but is now largely forgotten, which is a great loss as he's written some fine books which, in my opinion, have stood the test of time rather better than many of those of his contemporary and onetime friend Kingsley Amis. (Check out the chapter entitled "The Provincial All-Stars" in Dominic Sandbrook's excellent book "Never Had It So Good"

This book, largely set in the late 30s to late 50s, has two main themes: a difficult father-son relationship and jazz, which the main character finds releases him form his stifling upbringing. I found the depiction of the eras it's set in, and of location (e.g. seedy jazz clubs in Paris and London) very convincing. I won't say much about the story line - read it yourself & enjoy.

3.0 out of 5 stars OK but doesn't add much to previous albums, 15 Feb. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Nothing wrong with this album but I was disappointed with it, having expected more form the stellar cast of musicians and singers on it (Jennifer Warnes, Sharon Robinson, Roscoe Beck, Bill Gin ....) It doesn't add much to the earlier studio versions of most of the songs, and is vastly inferior to the imperious "Live in London" double mad over 30 years later
