5.0 out of 5 stars classic satire, 4 Feb 2013
Orellsclassic satire on the communist revolution in soviet russia. This is still an important book to read as it has many parallels to today. Its badic message of absolute power corrupts absolutely is as relevant today as it was in 1943 when this story was written

Ok as a basic guide, but the clues it gives as examples are laughably simple, rarely are the answers more than four words long. Look elsewhere if you want anything more than the very basics.

An excellent grounding in the basics of cryptic crosswords. It contains lots of clues, most of which are tricky to difficult. Very good value for money. I believe the author has published a full length book on the subject which may be worth investigating. Highly recommended.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not what you think it might be, 1 Feb 2013

This book is not really a how to do cryptic crosswords. At its heart it is simply a book of 56 crosswords grouped into 3 levels of difficulty. It has a few tips of the very basic kind like, "don,t attempt to do the clues in order" and "check out the word count", which are not really helpful and it briefly lists the different types of clues you may encounter but does not give any examples to illustrate this. The book does have some merit as a source of practice material, which is why I give it 2 stars. For people wanting to progress with cryptic crosswords there are much better books already published out there and some good websites. Note try to get a book aimed at English crosswords, as this one and some others have an American slant.
