5.0 out of 5 stars no problems at all - just what I wanted, 17 Oct 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Contrary to those people who have given poor reviews about this product, mine are fine. You have to read and understand the instructions to operate the sliding mechanisms properly - maybe those who found their poles difficult to telescope hadn't done things correctly. (A bit like those fold-up tents - when you know how they go you can fold them in a few seconds. If you don't know how, they can take hours before you end up wedging them behind the settee in exasperation and writing reviews saying how useless they are!)
The package contained two circular pieces that looked like they screwed onto the pole ends, but their purpose and how do get them on were not obvious. I rang the phone no on the instruction sheet - the call was answered straight away, and the information I wanted was obtained immediately.

Note: these poles are aluminium and not carbon fibre, but they are still very lightweight. Note also that they are hiking/walking poles NOT Nordic walking poles which are shaped differently. They are probably not suitable for long treks in difficult terrain, just like you probably wouldn't wear a cheapish pair of shoes to climb all the Scottish peaks. But they are useful for shorter walks in woodland, on footpaths, etc., and for those who for example have knee pain (my reason for getting them) and need just a little additional stylish help to get around. For that - they are a great help.

Skylanders: The Machine of Doom
Skylanders: The Machine of Doom

4.0 out of 5 stars A bit like the Goons, 13 Oct 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a very amusing and unlikely story. I read it aloud to my 8 year old grandson (who is familiar with the Skylanders characters) who listened with rapt attention telling me to "carry on" whenever I stopped. In many places he laughed out loud, and indeed it is written very amusingly, intelligently and wittily. The surreal and unlikely plot It is very reminiscent (to those of us old enough to remember) of the madcap Goon Show stories. Kaos has similarities to Moriarty, and some of the expressions and phrases used are straight out of the mouths of dear Neddy Seagoon and friends.

When you read aloud to someone, you're eyes have a chance to scan ahead, useful as there are some rather violent descriptions from time to time that are not needed, which I thought spoil the whimsical nature the story, and which I therefore automatically edited out. It is for this reason that I dropped a star.

4.0 out of 5 stars I would have given it 5* but ..., 13 Oct 2013

These hooks are great and well worth the money (including the postage), as other reviewers have noted. I would have given it 5 stars but dropped a star the wooden hooks sometimes come out of the plastic tubing, and this is a nuisance. To solve this problem, I stuck them in with Evostik Strong glue which I already had so didn't have to fork out to buy it, and this holds everything together fine.

5.0 out of 5 stars I totally disagree with the critics, 13 Oct 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This film had poor reviews from the critics who said that it was shallow and a let down after Midnight in Paris. DON'T TAKE ANY NOTICE OF THEM.
This is a wonderful film, all about how the trivia and shallowness of everyday life become so life-absorbing to most people.

This is a feel-good film, very amusing, with loads of wonderfully witty lines that cause you to laugh aloud. The story lines are superbly crafted and interwoven, and the directing and photography are first class. It's vintage Woody Allen - in positive happy mood (though with the usual occasional amusingly philosophical interjections about life's meaning and death) - all the way through, and all the threads are wrapped up neatly so that everyone in the film is grateful.

Highly, highly recommended. A treasure of a film. I really, really love it.

5.0 out of 5 stars You can't go abroad without this, 21 Aug 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
For planning rail journeys on the continent, this is indispensable, though a terrifying rumour has it that it might be the last version to be published. Planning such rail trips using the internet is hopeless, limiting and immensely frustrating. with this book you can see at once all the routes and have a much clearer idea of how services link together. If it's not to be published again, how ever will we occasional continental rail wanders manage?

5.0 out of 5 stars These are just great, 21 Aug 2013

I love these - they're just so clever and effective. They're NOTHING at all like those old hinged pop-up clip-ons, but much more modern and cool. Others wouldn't know you were wearing them - and with one quick swish they can be single handedly removed and dropped in a shirt top pocket. Excellent.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a wonderful book, 21 Aug 2013

It's more of a detailed but practical reference book on the techniques used for making pop-ups. There are lots of drawings and photographs to guide, with some beautiful designs. Not for a child (although an older child (say 11+) who is really interested in this subject could probably follow the instructions) but great for an adult to work through and then to share the techniques. Thoroughly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars A book to keep, 21 Aug 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is an excellent book, and ideal for a retired grandad (=me) to practice making the examples before sharing with grandchildren (8 +) who might like this sort of thing when they come round after school and just want to sit and do something quietly and constructive for a while. Twenty-nine models, a few very simple, a few challenging, and all quite clever.

5.0 out of 5 stars feedback from present recipient, 21 Aug 2013

I gave this as a present to a family member who is now living in the States, and who told me (after quite a while as it is a very long book) that he had enjoyed reading this - it had improved his knowledge of the history of the US enormously, being much more revealing than many standard histories he'd come across.

5.0 out of 5 stars one of the very best, 6 Jun 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
There are lots of these cut out model books and they are very cleverly designed. This is one of the very best of all and has wonderful inside ghostly scenes. It's great for doing with a child (aged around 8 +) who is interested in modelling, a bit at a time over two - three weeks. Actually it's strangely very relaxing for an adult to do when there's nothing on the telly and you're fed up of playing around on the computer. It's only when you cut out the parts and fold and bend them into shape, you'll appreciate how wonderfully thought-out and designed this model is.
