2.0 out of 5 stars Predictable luvvie's film, 9 Dec 2013

The shots of Copenhagen were quite pleasant, but this was a slice of not very believable life in the actor-art world of Denmark. A lot of shouting, drinking and drugs with dysfunctional marriages and (despite everything) wonderful triumphs at the theatre. Got the feeling that it has all been done before rather better and more interestingly.

4.0 out of 5 stars a girl, a town and its shops in early 20th century, 11 Oct 2013
This review is from: High Wages (Paperback)
A good unsentimental picture of small town England around WWI. Full of fascinating detail about shops, clothes and class-attitudes. Feminist without being aggressive. Very beautifully produced by Persephone - clear print, pretty endpapers and bookmark.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not worth the effort, 25 Sep 2013

It is difficult to understand how this book gained admirers (as according to the blurb it did). The style is infuriating--every noun has to have two or more adjectives, every verb a couple of adverbs, and the effect is long winded and banal. The subject matter could have been worthwhile, but the treatment is silly and repetitive, and it is laden with cliche.

A delightful and fascinating book. All the essays are worth reading, and it is very well written. Definitely a good buy.
