2.0 out of 5 stars Following the Cavendon Women, 28 Mar. 2015

I was looking forward to seeing how the Cavendon story would continue. Albeit that I read it in one day, as it was a page turning book, it disappointed. Barbara needs a better editor! She mentions PORTRAITS by Constable early on! There are other anomalies which irk and the language used by characters is much more 21st century than 1920s! Do read it if you want to follow the characters in the two families, but don't put it high on your "must reads" Fun to have Emma Harte mentioned!!

3.0 out of 5 stars Keep this for your beach reading, 28 Mar. 2015

A pleasant read that runs out of steam near the end. Not as good as the usual Patricia Scanlan books. The interweaving of old and new friendships all centred on Ireland catches the imagination, but I'd save this for the beach when concentration can wander, rather than read it on a winter evening when you want a satisfying story.

1.0 out of 5 stars NOT VINTAGE KATIE FFORDE, 19 Feb. 2015

This review is from: A Vintage Wedding (Kindle Edition)
What a disappointment. I had been looking forward to her latest novel, but this consists of dialogue held apart by a very thin plot. Three women meet for the first time and within half an hour are setting up a company. The raison d'etre for this wedding company fades to be revived later in the book. Previous Katie Fforde novels have focussed on one main character with good supporting local colour. This one with three women with a less than satisfactory scenario is a let down. Possibly a read for the beach!

This is a superb book of Commonwealth War Grave Commission cemeteries. As well as the amazingly varied photographs the introductory text is well worth reading. The purpose behind the establishment of the Commission and subsequent design and establishment of the cemeteries is clearly written. A must for anyone interested in how we have commemorated and honoured those who fell in the Great War.

A real surprise, so I won't give away any plot-lines. A really good read; great how one is reminded of the characters at the start.

3.0 out of 5 stars Absorbing trilogy, pity about the poor translation, 28 July 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This trilogy was absorbing in content, but thoroughly spoiled by the translation by an American. I would have given 5 stars for the story but was so disappointed as the translations were in American terms for English places and his misunderstanding of England were woeful. A priest in the Church of England does not have his first "rectorate" for example!! For a new perspective on immigration and sheep rearing, and the immigrants relations with the Maori people it is a really good read, so don't be put off by the infelicities. Good to be able to read a "landscape" book in one go and find out what happens to all the generations.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superbly researched, 22 May 2014

I took this book on holiday to Europe with not much knowledge of its content, having enjoyed her previous novel. Visiting Budapest and Vienna and reading Sisi's story and the "Fortune Hunter" himself made it all the more interesting. A really absorbing read and well worth a second read. The attention to detail of the events is superb
