4.0 out of 5 stars Band of the year..., 7 Aug 2010
This review is from: Absynthe Minded (Audio CD)
...in Belgium that is.

I wouldn't exactly call it rock though. Nice pop tunes with a twist.
A sort of more relaxed dEUS if you wish.
The whole album sounds great, no bad tracks at all.

Kaz Lux' voice and Jan Akkerman's guitar are what made this band great.
All the singles are here along with the best album tracks.
Raw power that didn't last long enough.

Also check out the 'Eli' album that Akkerman made with Lux.

5.0 out of 5 stars Of the highest quality possible, 2 Aug 2010
This review is from: Threshingfloor (Audio CD)
I am not of the opinion that Woven Hand is a side project anymore. David Eugene has now made almost as many albums under that name as he did with Sixteen Horsepower.
Personally I feel that Sixteen Horsepower was a more powerful band name. But that is only a minor distraction.
The quality of the music and the lyrics have stayed on that same high level throughout Edwards' career.
This one is my favourite album so far under the new name.
Enough said. I can only recommend this highly.

5.0 out of 5 stars In a word : Essential, 21 July 2010
This review is from: Real Raw Rockabilly (Audio CD)
Get it today. Don't leave it in the racks. Not at that price!
This is an absolutely essential introduction to a genre that is all but forgotten.
Ever wonder where the Stray Cats or Robert Gordon learned their trade?
Well, it's all here.
Rockabilly at its best.

4.0 out of 5 stars A compilation that works!, 1 May 2010
I have never been a big fan of the Triffids. Especially not their critically acclaimed Born Sandy Devotional.
But this compilation works something fantastic.
If you have ever heard of them but never investigated further then this is the starting point.
It's really Terriffid!

3.0 out of 5 stars A shady release, 30 Mar 2010
This review is from: Midnight Train (Audio CD)
Just got this at a very very reasonable price.
It's not all bad, the sound quality of the rehearsals is quite adequate even.
The two live tracks not so good.
What you get is...rehearsals indeed.
There's three snippets of around one minute. The rest are more or less full versions.
Fans of Bob should get this on the basis of it being a historical document.
At a reasonable price of course.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best yet!, 5 Mar 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I've known this man's music for a long time. Though I've had this new one for about a month now I loved it from the first spin.
It's simply his best yet. And what's even better the guitar playing is extraordinarily good. Gurf Morlix yay!
The music's Hubbard's mix of country blues, gospel, whathaveyou.
You should buy this. Really.
And all that came before.
Great musician.
Amen.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ah! The archives!, 5 Dec 2009
This is a great and exciting live document from 1979.
Graham never had a better backing band than the Rumour and it shows here in full glory.
Although he changed musical direction in later years you can hear him here at the height of his rock 'n roll powers.
This was a time when the Rumour were equal to the E-Street Band.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not convinced, 16 Nov 2009
This review is from: North Hills (Dig) (Audio CD)
Uncut gave this 5 stars. Umm...
Other reviewers here find comparisons with CCR, the Band, the Eagles. Umm...
Agreed somewhere in there are echoes of the Band but mostly I find Dawes a bunch of musicians who are not clear on where they want to go with their music.
It's pleasant enough, likeable even but I'm not fully convinced.
3 stars it is from me but worth checking out.

5.0 out of 5 stars I'm fully convinced now, 16 Nov 2009

I rated Amy Millan's 2006 album Honey from the Tombs a solid 5 stars. Unusual for me I know.
The same high rating stands for this one as well.
She truly is one of the finest voices to come out of the Noughties.
Apart from that the songs and lyrics are wonderful too and the playing on this album is immaculate.
One can easily play both albums one after another and still not get tired of this great lady.
I can only urge you to buy it. It'll be a fantastic listening experience.
You have my word on that.
