4.0 out of 5 stars Darkest Louisiana, 15 Jan. 2011
This review is from: 7 Walkers (Audio CD)
Yet another supergroup. It's all the fashion these days. Led by the Grateful Dead's drummer Bill Kreutzmann and Papa Mali who tones down his swamp guitar histrionics for this album. The Meter's George Porter came in on bass to replace Reed Mathis who plays on all but one track.
The music is an amalgam of swamp, boogie, blues, gospel and has often a dark undertone.
This is actually a pretty great album to listen to all the way through. It never sags and doesn't outstay its welcome.
I like it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Shine on brightly, 4 Dec. 2010
This review is from: THE SHINE (Audio CD)
This release appeared with no fanfare or promotion. One day it was there.
It's his absolute best from the recent years and that's not taking anything away from the previous four since they were brilliant as well.
I counted just one uptempo number on the whole disc, the rest is an interlocking maze of laid back swamp country ballads.
White's voice at its soothing best and the sparse backing instruments well in the back.
A dream of an album.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very British country rock, 31 Oct. 2010
Yes indeed, British.
As opposed to the country rock made popular by their American counterparts the Eagles.
A real pleasure to hear both Island albums by this band on CD again.
I know I loved them when they came out in the early 70's and still do.
Laid back, yet solid.
This proves that Jess Roden had a quality voice as he later proved again with his solo work.
Good stuff.

4.0 out of 5 stars Smashing debut EP, 23 Oct. 2010
This review is from: Raggamuffin (Audio CD)
Yes,an EP not a single. 5 wonderful tracks from a young and beatiful Belgian singer songwriter who's been playing big festivals for some time now. Just her and an acoustic guitar.
Raggamuffin is of course her big song and it gets a band treatment here as do 3 of the 4 other songs.
Don't worry, they're all good.
My only advice is to follow this EP with a full CD quickly as I wouldn't want to see the momentum getting lost.

3.0 out of 5 stars For the singles fans, 6 Oct. 2010
This review is from: Collections (Audio CD)
Nothing wrong at all with this compilation.
It's cheap and has all the singles that matter to the casual fan.
Did I mention it's cheap?

4.0 out of 5 stars It's what he does best., 3 Oct. 2010
This review is from: Georgia Warhorse (Audio CD)
And what does he do so well you may ask.
This soulful bluesy laidback rock music, that's what.
Five albums in and still growing. Another great album from the guys.
Can't say a bad thing about the whole of Georgia Warhorse.

4.0 out of 5 stars funky!, 22 Aug. 2010
This review is from: Fine, Fine Line (Audio CD)
The other reviewer is right of course.
This has nothing to do with the blues rock of Free.
Despite being one of the main songwriters in Free, Fraser changes direction in an unexpected way.
He goes all funky on this album and that is not a bad thing.
It shows courage and the need to do something else entirely.
The bonus here is that the songs are still solid.
Great effort!

4.0 out of 5 stars No more surprises, 20 Aug. 2010
This review is from: Hawk (Audio CD)
So the novelty effect is gone and the Nancy&Lee comparisons are all played out.
It indeed IS all Campbell's work and credit where credit's due.
But in the end it's Lanegan's voice that once again does the trick for me.

Solid album, good tracks and Willy Mason on two songs is a bonus.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a debut ep!, 9 Aug. 2010
Young Belgian band. They seem to sprout like, well, sprouts.

Only four songs on this ep, a bit short but very very promising.
What shall we call the music? Dreamy americana? Sounds just about right.

Oh, and get the real thing if you can find it. It comes with drawings and lyrics for each of the songs on separate cards. Nice touch.

Really looking forward to a full cd.

4.0 out of 5 stars A return to form? How should I know?, 9 Aug. 2010
This review is from: Tribal (Audio CD)
I haven't followed the good Doctor's last couple releases to be honest.
Tribal is still on first play when I write this but four stars are rewarded without any hesitation.
Fantastic grooves all the way through!
The best thing I can do now is go back and get the previous few cd's that I missed.

Carry on up that mighty Mississippi!
