5.0 out of 5 stars Supergroup or one-off project?, 16 Feb. 2014

Whichever, this is a superb roots album. I was a bit annoyed to find out that this album was already released six months ago. I only just found out. Grayson Capps and Will Kimbrough, both long time heroes of mine, team up here for a formidable effort of countrified acoustic jams.
Capps' title track, the funny singalong Mr.Lee, the great ballad Oh Colorado sung by Savana Lee (of the duo Sugarcane Jane). That's just the first three songs. Wonderful!
The old Grayson song 'Poison' get a brandnew reworking also.
And all of it recorded on the back porch!
A fantastic effort.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great voices of Cuba, 9 Dec. 2013
Two CD's, sixty years of Cuban vocal history. All that at a small price.
All the big names are here so if you've never heard Cuban music this is about the best place to start.

5.0 out of 5 stars New Soul's where it's at!, 21 Oct. 2013

Well. I finally forked over 10 quid for the privilege of having these four songs.
I was hoping the price would come down after a while but that didn't happen.
At least I got a five star EP out of it. Fan of both Reed and the Spanish Pepper Pots, I must say they work together terribly well. Classic Soul done extremely well.
Let's see how Reed's new album will turn out. This is a tasty apéritif.

1.0 out of 5 stars Stop that screeching!, 13 Sept. 2013

I thought the day would never come. Eventually it did. Robert Fisher has made a bad album.
Five years ago I heard voices saying Pilgrim Road was his downfall. I still maintain that was his masterpiece.I still do.
Ghost Republic is just a badly worked out acoustic collection where even his voice sounds uninterested.
But above all that screeching saw sound that's used everywhere makes it unlistenable for me.
Enough.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's in the genes, 30 Jan. 2013
This review is from: Fourth Corner (Audio CD)
Daughter of guitar wonderboy Chris Whitley and Belgian mother Hélene Gevaert (whose brother Alain plays with dEUS).
Chris lived for a number of years in Ghent and, after a turbulent life and some great albums, unfortunately passed away in 2005.
But in Trixie he has a daughter who brilliantly carries the torch.
She already had a couple of EP's under her belt but Fourth Corner, her full lenght debut, took a long while to get a release. The album was already recorded in the Spring of 2012 so it took almost a year to finally see the light of day. Why?
Did I mention Black Dub? Thanks to father Chris, Daniel Lanois invited her to be part of his Black Dub band and they recorded one truly fantastic album. On hindsight it's her voice that really carried that album.
Fourth Corner, by the way, is just as good.
Some of her older songs get a new coat of paint:Irene, Breathe you in my dreams, Oh the joy, Pieces.
The only one really missing here is I'd rather go blind.
Sometimes she soars, sometimes its all doom.
But it's been a long while since I heard such a fantastic debut.
I'm proud to be a Belgian even if Trixie Whitley is only half.

5.0 out of 5 stars My personal favorite, 27 Dec. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The superb series called Backbeats has reached thirty titles and all are most excellent.
Love & Jealousy (The deeper side of southern soul) is clearly my personal favorite. I simply keep playing it more than any of the others.
There's great cuts by Syl Johnson, Otis Clay, Fontella Bass (r.i.p), O.V. Wright and Al Green.
The most pleasantly surprising are the two tracks by Quiet Elegance.
All the music is slow burning sensual soul perfect for an evening at home with a new lady.
A must buy for under £ 5.

4.0 out of 5 stars When two giants collide, 21 Dec. 2012
This review is from: Buddy and Jim [VINYL] (Vinyl)
Somehow it must have been written in the stars that these two gentlemen of the alt. scene were to record an album together.
At 34 minutes it is indeed a short collaboration but one that covers a broad spectrum. Rock, Bluegrass, Country, tearjerkers and
Rumba (!).
Despite all these different genres the CD flows smoothly and hangs together very well.
Neither Buddy Miller nor Jim Lauderdale should need further introduction. Miller's the player and producer of many alt. country pearls while Lauderdale is more or less the Bluegrass specialist.
Julie, Buddy's wife also contributes a song and two co-writes.
There's not a bad song on this and it's a true pleasure to hear these two wonderful artists together.
Buy and enjoy!

4.0 out of 5 stars Norway's golden voice, 30 Nov. 2012
This review is from: Wait By the Fire (Audio CD)
The best singer ever to come out of Norway has been on the solo path ever since his equally golden band Midnight Choir split up back in 2004.
His latest project is a tribute cd full of Chip Taylor songs. Approved by the great man himself who wrote the afterword in the booklet and even contributed a new song "This Darkest Day".
Paal has delved deeply in Chip's back catalogue but also recorded a brilliant version of the best known "Angel of the Morning".
The music sounds a lot like Midnight Choir. Lots of space, minimal backing which brings out the best in Flaata's voice.

Tracks:
Wait by the fire
He sits at my table
Angel of the morning
I can make it with you
If I stop loving you
Sleepy eyes
Graceland souvenirs
Weaker moments
You didn't get here last night
This darkest day

Perfect music for spending those dark cold winter nights by an open fire.

5.0 out of 5 stars It crawled from the swamp, 23 Nov. 2012

Swamp Pop started officially in 1955 but didn't have a name yet. This double disc has songs from 1955 to 1961 with the bulk in 1958-59.
Most of the artist were probably superstars in the five parishes that surrounded theirs. Some were lucky enough to be know in New Orleans or the neighbouring states of Texas or Mississippi.
A few(and only a few) went nationwide with one or two singles.
Clearly Swamp Pop was a local phenomenon.

Out of the 65 tracks here you will surely know a couple of names: Bobby Charles, Phil Phillips, Jimmy Clanton, Johnnie Allen, John Fred & his Playboy Band.
But! Do names like Guitar Jr, Jivin'Gene, Glenn Wells & the Blends,T.K.Hulin or Gabe Dean ring a bell? There's many more of these unknowns on these two discs.

The Music? There's lots of slows here but not all.
Most are in waltz time and that was de rigeur at the time. Lyrically most themes are about lost love, falling in love, betrayal...you get the picture.

This compilation covers only six years and a small part of the U.S.A.
But it's the same time where Bill Haley, Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis and Roy Orbison became household names.

The artists on Swamp Pop in fact deserved the same stardom. The music on these two discs is, in fact, just as good.

You can't leave this in the racks as it's under seven pounds.

You know what to do, don't you?

5.0 out of 5 stars This is one CD to buy, 5 Nov. 2012
This review is from: The Fame Recordings (Audio CD)
We all know Dan Penn as the songwriter who didn't like to step into the limelight himself.
He wrote the hits for others often with Spooner Oldham but also with Donnie Frits or Marlin Greene or Bob Killen.
We all know the big hits he's written for others: The Letter By The Box Tops, Dark End of The Street, I'm your puppet, Do Right Woman.
You will not find many of Penn's solo output rather many compilation albums of his songs sung by others.
Yeah, that kind of man.
But now, with the Fame recordings, you'll find a whole album of Penn's demo's (most in fully recorded form).
Some of his hits are here: The Puppet (as it was originally called) and You left the Water Running and It Tears Me Up.
Lesser known beauties as Rainbow Road and Far from the Maddenning Crowd are certainly worth their weight.
Anyway, 24 tracks that are all worth of your time.
This really is the album to get for 2012.
