4.0 out of 5 stars Worth it for the transfers!, 9 Aug. 2014

As with most trilogies, the third is the weakest. But for low budget Aussie thrills the first two more than deliver!
Mad Max may be the first pre-post apocalytic movie. It has a slower pace, but wonderful character moments and a fantastic build to a spectacular revenge fuelled finale.
Mad Max 2- or The Road Warrior, is a superior sequel that builds wonderfully on the vibe of the original. It's amazingly huge scale is pared down to an excellent intimate tale that delivers all the car carnage and truck explosions it's predecessor promised.
Beyond Thunderdome loses the personal storytelling and is a victim of its large budget Hollywood makeover. Overall though, as a Trilogy it's well worth the asking price. Extras are scarce, but audio and visual quality are stupendous across the set. With reboot/ sequel: Mad Max: Fury Road due soon, this set will no doubt receive a lavish special edition treatment. But as a place holder, & im the event Fury Road sucks, this is a bargain! Mad Max 1 & 2 contain both their original Australian dialogue, & the horrible US overdub. Part 2- Road Warrior, also comes with a commentary from writer/ director- George Miller.

4.0 out of 5 stars Ape shall review Ape., 1 Aug. 2014
A really excellent collection of the original 5 ...Apes movies.
The qualities of all the movies are debatable- everyone has their own favourites- one thing not in question, is the painstaking work the 20TH Century Fox have put into this bluray set.
Thoroughly excellent picture quality/ transfers, especially considering their age. Copious extras compliment each disc, every entry has it's own numerous documentaries and the 1968 original also contains an entire franchise spanning feature length making of that covers the entire run.
If only all studios would put this much effort into providing great value for money and rewarding fans with such a bounty.
Also included, is the long sought after and rumoured "Directors Cut," of Conquest Of The Planet Of The Apes. Unfairly neutered and cut down by a shocked studio, the restored version of this movie presents it as it was originally intended- a dark, violent portrayal of the Ape uprising against their human tormentors. Arguably, the biggest influence on recent Apes reboots- Rise... & Dawn...
At the start of my review, i said every fan will have their own favourites, here's mine:
Planet Of The Apes.
Escape From The Planet Of The Apes.
Conquest Of The Planet Of The Apes.
Feel free to agree/ disagree, but shell out for this collection. It's worth it!

4.0 out of 5 stars Keaton Returns!, 1 Aug. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Good likeness of Keaton era Batman. Plenty of articulation for easy poseability. Stands on it's own no problem and the rubbery fabric cape is a very nice accurate touch. I have two minor complaints, it seems a little small when placed next to the accompanying Danny Devito Penguin figure. And as the forthcoming wave 2 of this "DC Multiverse" figure range is set to include a Michelle Pfeiffer Catwoman, it seems a little strange that the batsuit isn't the redesigned version from Batman Returns. Nitpicks aside, this is a great little figure for adult collectors and fans of the Tim Burton Batman movies. I can't wait for the Catwoman one to complete my set!

Average figure of an average character. It'd be good if he was removable from his gigantic "Super Suit." To be pedantic, he isn't even half as big as he should be.

As a teen i loved, loved Sleeper! Their previous albums-Smart & The It Girl were great sub Blur observations on 90's Brit life, with sharp tunes and sharper/ snarkier lyrics. Whilst this third output sounds way more accomplished, the catchiness has been sacrificied for a more mature sound. Allegedly, singer, Louise Wener went to a voice coach, after many criticisms of her rather papery thin voice. Sadly, her newfound vocal confidence reduces some great tunes to leaden, mid paced anthems, that may have previously been belted out at double quick time as spiky, punk pop hits. Other than that, if you give into the "mature" sound- enjoy!

4.0 out of 5 stars I Love Robocop 2!, 31 July 2014

This review is from: RoboCop Trilogy [DVD] (DVD)
Everyone knows the rule of trilogies, the third one usually sucks. There are some exceptions- Nolan's Dark Knight movies, Bourne ( Now sadly tainted by that awful, unnecessary fourth entry.), but in general this rule always applies, and Robocop is a prime example of a trilogy gone wrong. Enough has been written about the original, it's an exemplary 80's sci fi movie that still impesses today. Thoughtful, melancholic, satirical and with a lot more to say than a film with THAT title should be able to deliver.
I also believe that Robocop 2 is a highly underrated sequel. To often lumped in with the third one as a failure, i think it's aged remarkably well. It retains the wit and violence of it's predecessor, and possesses a great cast, mostly returnees from the original. The finale is a spectacular display of destruction and heroics, that now seems oddly similar to the first Iron Man's (2008) climactic battle! I cannot defend the third, however. It really is rank. Special features are solely focused on Robocop 1, and are plentiful, it also has the gorier, nastier Director's Cut. Sadly 2 receives nothing more than trailers. Bah! Very good dvd transfers and sound quality on all three. Especially if you grew up watching these on vhs. Classic!

4.0 out of 5 stars How to do a sequel!, 31 July 2014

Cracking follow up to the original masterpiece, that manages to be both more epic, yet maintain the more intimate dysfunctional family feel of the first. Inventive, disturbing, surreal and wonderful, with great performances from a (mostly) returning cast. It only sets one foot wrong- i'll allow viewers to decide which foot and when- but a truly fantastic horrotlr sequel. And how many of those actually exist?

Sadly ending prematurely, this complete collection is a great animated show that will sit well with laymans, or just fans of the movies with no prior X-Men knowledge. It reinvents and retells classic comic storylines in a surprising, individual manner that helps distinguish it from the excellent '92 'toon. Stunningly animated, great voice acting and wonderfully complex storytelling- especially for a kids show, is the perfect intro for fans of/ or indeed a continuation of the older movie Trilogy. Highly recommended!

4.0 out of 5 stars Give It A Go!, 31 July 2014
This review is from: Robocop [Blu-ray] [2014] (Blu-ray)
First of all, i'd like to note- i think the original Robocop is an undisputed classic. I went into this remake with huge reservations, & a determination to hate it. My biggest disappointment was how much i enjoyed this reboot. Despite it's lower age certificate, it is remarkably grown up with enough violence (though a lack of on screen gore!) to satisfy die hard
fans. Characterisation is strong, & an accomplished cast (Micheal Keaton, Gary Oldman & Jay Baruchel are particular highlights!) help to paper over narrative lapses/ plot holes. It is ( though nowhere near as great!) a re-invention akin to Nolan's Batman Begins. Give it a chance- if you don't like it, it's not like it taints the original movies that culminated in the castrated Robocop 3, & the terrible family friendly tv series!

4.0 out of 5 stars Super., 23 July 2014

An amazingly definitive collection of all 4 Christopher Reeve Superman movies, & Bryan Singer's 2006 Superman Returns.
Extra features are truly exhaustive, with vintage making of features as well as newly commissioned retrospective documentaries. This boxset also contains both the theatrical and directors cuts of the original movie. And the re edited "Donner Cut" of Superman II, which largely removes some of the sillier aspects of the 1980 theatrical version (which is also included.).
Parts 3 & 4 are also included, no matter what your opinion is of them. Superman Returns, in my opinion, is a fairly underrated movie. It's a little slow paced and lacking in action, but as last years Man Of Steel has shown us, too much destruction and set pieces can be a bad thing too! Picture and sound quality is excellent overall. Though it's unlikely many people will ever play Superman 4! The collection is rounded out with a bonus disc that houses a 2hr documentary, that covers ol' Supes from his 1938 comic debut, until 2006's aforementioned 'Returns. All in all, a great package, and a must for fans of the original Reeve movies.
