4.0 out of 5 stars Tactics is the key to victory, 8 Nov. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
As we all know any game is a gamble as to whether it'll be good or bad, for those who have played dark souls the style of gameplay here will seem like familiar territory. I however have never played dark souls, it didnt grip me but Lords of the fallen did. Now for starters the graphics are beyond beautiful, looking out at the snow covered mountains is a joy in itself. the graphics even go one step further in that if you are fighting an enemy who has the sun at his back you will be blinded thus giving him the advantage until you shift position, now there are very few games that do that. The voice acting is typically bad, especially the main character, but then again such things are pretty much expected for games these days. Most are very easy to complete, without any real sense of challenge. The game also rewards exploration and there are some "cracked" walls dotted throughout the games areas that can easily be knocked down to reveal hidden treasures. In that respect the game is very good because it wants you to go off the beaten track and to explore.

There are however a few issues with the game, for starters the story could have been done better. At the very beginning you arrive at one of the games only two locations, the keystone monastery, with your companion Kaslo and are told that you, Harkyn, have been let out of prison to fight the invading Roghar hordes. There is no real detailed explanation about who you are, why you were in prison or anything like that. there just doesnt appear to be any "flesh" to the characters we meet, they all seem to just be there and you're expected to go with flow. Now Lords of the Fallen markets itself as an RPG and yes it does have the typical side quests and some form of decision making process that all RPGs are meant to have, however some of the side quests are a little pointless and frankly could have been designed better. But my main criticism of the game is the bugs, i've been playing the game for a few days now and at least once a day the game crashes completely. I'm going along happily cutting through waves of monsters then suddenly the screen cuts out with a message saying "an error has occurred" and i have to log back into the game again and start from where i last saved which means i've lost all the XP i had gained after my previous save. There are also a few sound and graphics glitches that randomly occur if i've been playing the game for long enough, that's usually a sign its about to crash so i head to the nearest save spot and log out. When i start the game up again everything is now fixed...for the time being. Yes it's damn annoying but it doesnt make the game impossible to play. Hopefully a few patches will arrive shortly and that'll fix the problem. we'll wait and see.

Now for the good points, the key to the game is tactics, tactics and more tactics. If you believe its a simply case of hack'slash = victory then you'll be dissapointed. The trick is to plan for each encounter, now some enemies are very very weak and a few hacks with your sword will kill them but very quickly you'll be meeting some really tough critters that will lunge at you, dodge your attacks, block them with shields and even spit poison at you and shoot you with fire arrows...sometimes all at once. and even if you kill them some enemies will blow up in a last ditch attempt to take you with them. Now obviously they can be beaten but you will need to choose your weapons, armour and fighting style before each engagement and frankly i find that marvelous. for example you are going to face an enemy with a shield, you've got some good armour but your weapon doesnt do much damage now that's ok because your weight is very low meaning you have fantastic maneuverability and can dodge his attacks with ease thus meaning you will be taking him down bit by bit. What's that you say? you want that badass sword you found which does 70+ damage? well yes you can equip that but your strength isnt hight enough to use it effectively so you'll be pointlessly swinging a very heavy weapon that will do very little damage. Tactics is the key. The boss fights are many and varied (11 in total) and each have their own way of battling, and when you do enough damage to them they'll change tactics and come at you in a different way. But once you've beaten them once you'll quickly figure out their fighting style and they'll be pretty easy to beat. Again planning is the key...otherwise you'll just end up dying over and over again.

Overall Lords of the Fallen is a fun and enjoyable to game to play, it may be short for a standard RPG (took me 17 hours to complete everything). It's a game that is visually stunning and forces you to strategise as well as rewarding exploration. Yes there are glitches and bugs with the game, but it's definitely one to play.

4.0 out of 5 stars What went wrong Peter Jackson?, 26 Oct. 2014
The second part of the Hobbit story is about to be unleashed in an extended version which i am counting down the days till it's release. However i feel that this film only deserves four stars because it's simply not as good as the first, let me be very clear the film is great and wonderful but it just doesnt have that same "strength" to it for lack of a better word that its predecessor had. The Lord of the Rings films went from great to amazing to spectacular, here its gone from amazing to good. This begs the question, what the hell happened Peter Jackson?

The film starts off well enough, the scenery is great and the landscapes are divine...seeing the dwarves sail across the lake towards the lonely mountain never fails to make my eyes bulge. Even lake town and the appearance of new characters has been done well, Bard, Thranduil, the Master and his servant Alfred all play their parts exceptionally well...i tip my hat to the great talent that is Stephen Fry at this point. But there are certain issues with the film that has dragged it down.

Firstly is the scene when we meet Beorn, it just didnt have the same impact as the book. Beorn is an important character in the book and it just didnt come across well in the film, definitely could have been done much better.

Secondly, and we all knew this was coming, is the return of Legolas. Now credit where credit is due the film doesnt really focus all the much on our much adored elvish prince, he has a few good scenes here and there and very restricted dialogue but the film makes sure that the focus is always on Bilbo and the dwarves. Now in a way i suppose we can forgive PJ for bringing Legolas back considering we have now entered his kingdom and since this is long before the Fellowship gets underway it would make sense that he would be here in Mirkwood. So yes Legolas is an issue that the film couldnt escape from but they handled it well

Thirdly is the introduction of a pointless female character called Tauriel, what the hell the point of her is i have no idea at all. Had she been given just a small thirty second role that would've been fine, or better yet had she been removed from the film altogether things would've gone better. The actress who plays her is not without talent but it still doesnt answer the question which is what is the point of Tauriel?

Fourthly, and this is the biggest issue of all, is the "relationship" that forms between Kili and Tauriel. Peter Jackson what on earth were you thinking (or not thinking as the case may be) when you accepted this into the script? to say it goes against the book is obvious but now it appears as if you are just taking liberties and making stuff up. This is undoubtedly the core reason why many fans, myself included, were disappointed.

However a few issues does not a bad film make, there were more than enough good points to the film that made up the difference. The introduction to Smaug and his "conversation" with Bilbo was done brilliantly, even the design of the dragon was exceptional and we must not forget to give Benedict Cumberbatch his due. i'm sure this will make for interesting conversation between Holmes and Watson at 221B Baker Street.

Overall it must be said that this is a great and entertaining film, but i'm keeping my fingers crossed that Peter Jackson pulled his finger out and went back to the drawing board when he began making the third and final film so that we fans will not be disappointed a second time

5.0 out of 5 stars One does walk into Mordor...successfully, 26 Oct. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I'll admit I was a little skeptical of this game when i first heard of it but its turned out to be a gem...and an entertaining one at that. The story may be a little old hat, man has family murdered, man goes on quest for vengeance, man is aided by undead wraith who has possessed his body...you know the usual. Normally a game without an engaging story is a sign its going to fail, but that is not the case here. The real success of the game lies with the nemesis system. I cant get enough of the fact that some nameless grunt out of the horde can rise to the status of Captain when he manages to score a lucky final blow on me, who then manages through one way or another to become war chief. Then when the time comes for me to take on said warchief he recognises me from when he killed me all that time ago. He even gets doubly angry at me because i might have given him a scar or two from our previous encounter, again all of which he remembers. For those who have played the games you will instantly see similarities with regards to Assassins Creed and Batman Arkham Asylum...the part where you have Talion jump off the towers and land on the ground below was taken straight from Assassin's Creed. Yes there has been criticism about this, but it's worked brilliantly for this game. running, climbing, sneaking etc all perfectly done. Even the voice acting is something to give praise to, which is very unusual for a game because the voice acting tends to be more wooden than a tree.

As has been said the story is pretty mediocre, but the characters are not. Talion himself is likeable enough, Queen Marwen and her daughter are likeable too despite the fact they are completely fictional. Even the great, but crazy, Scottish dwarf Torvin was greatly entertaining. Torvin is one of those fictional characters that you wish were in Tolkien's book, but the one person who is and who is arguably the best character of the game is the elven smith Calebrimbor. The game has done well with regards to Tolkien's lore, it focuses on the fact that Calebrimbor was deceived by Sauron to teach him how to make the rings of power for the dwarven and human kings. It does take a few liberties however with Calebrimbor stealing the one ring from Sauron later on but you'll have to see how well that works out when you play the game yourselves. With regards to the Lore there are a few gems littered about the sandbox arena of Mordor, each of which tells you a little about the lives of the humans, elves, orcs and wizards that are or who have been linked to Mordor in the past. All of which are a pure delight for fans of Tolkien's world such as myself.

Overall Shadow of Mordor is a great game to play, even when the main campaign is done you can still go around executing any poor unfortunate orc you please...and by this time you'll have cemented your legend firmly in the psyche of every orc in the land that many will simply flee from the sight of you. The land never runs out of grunts for you to kill if you get bored

5.0 out of 5 stars Peter Jackson shines again, 26 Oct. 2014
Absolutely fantastic!
A great beginning to the start of the journey, very similar in terms of pace, scenery etc to the Fellowship of the Ring which was great. The acting is exceptional, each actor was perfectly selected for the part they had to play, and above all is the fact that Peter Jackson kept to the book as much as possible. Yes it's of course difficult to turn a children's book into a film for all ages to enjoy whilst knowing it cannot be on the same level as the Lord of the Rings trilogy, but certainly for part one of the Hobbit he has succeeded.

For all true fans of Tolkien's works this is the one to get.

4.0 out of 5 stars A gamble that successfully paid off, 7 Oct. 2014

This review is from: Destiny (PS4) (Video Game)
This is without a doubt the best FPS out there at the moment, Destiny has an engaging story and numerous side missions and other challenges that change each week. You can go solo or complete the game with other players, the game is designed to be flexible so that those who want to go it alone can do so without being penalised. Yes it will be more difficult than if you played the missions with others, but the choice is yours and that is a good thing. The game features three warrior classes each with their own strengths and unique talents, again its designed to offer you choice in your play style. if you want to be a pistol toting, warp wielding warlock with a rocket launcher in his back pocket then you can be one. Now for the main downside, and its really the only downside as far as i'm concerned, and that is that your entire destiny experience is completely at the mercy and dependent upon the strength of your internet connection. If you have poor reception then you are not going to have a very fun time because the game will keep cutting out. Bungie however must've known this would happen and so even if you do lose connection and are cast back to the void of space right when you're about to deal the death blow to some major foe you've been trying to take down for the last hour then fear not because you will still keep all your upgrades, looted equipment etc that you have acquired prior to the game cutting out. There are also issues with the destiny servers, seems they still havnt got all the bugs fixed yet but things are improving and for those reasons i give it 4/5

Overall Destiny is an amazing game, its one i only decided to buy about three days before it's release, and i dont regret getting it. So come and join in the adventure and i will see you all in the tower of guardians

4.0 out of 5 stars Who's watching us?, 14 Aug. 2014
This review is from: Watch Dogs (PS4) (Video Game)
watch dogs was a game that caught my attention due to the interaction between the player and the game world, and it didnt really disappoint. yes there was not as much interaction as i would've preferred, you cant just barge into builds at your leisure but when you think about it that's not what Watch dogs is all about. You play a hacker, and by that very name would indicate that you're a person who operation in the shadows and doesnt draw attention to themself so that means no random burglaries or assaults in the middle of the street in order to pick up cash. This is NOT GTA and nor should it ever be considered similar in any way, Watch dogs is a great game in its own right and so if you want to buy it thinking its going to be no different than GTA V then this is definitely not the game for you. Now the story was pretty good for what you would expect it all to be about, hacking, uncovering secrets and shadowy underworld criminal activities, cyber warfare etc and it works well, your character doesnt inspire a great deal of sympathy because of what he does for a living but given that he gets the chance to atone for past sins (as well as putting down gangsters and other criminals) makes you want to go along for the ride and see what you can do to make the city a better place. with great power comes great responsibility and all that. The gameplay is pretty solid and easy to master, though i have to admit the driving is a bit of a nightmare because at times it felt like i was driving a concrete block rather than a vehicle. but persevere and you'll get there. I especially like the way your actions influence the people in the street, stop crimes from occurring and save lives and people will like you and allow you to walk around the street without any hassle, but piss people off enough and they'll shop you to the police faster than you can blink. The graphics were of amazing quality, especially the water, seriously it was the closest to real water i've ever seen in a game, but the city itself no matter if its day or night looks incredibly beautiful. One of the best things is that the game doesnt end with the campaign, there are PLENTY of side missions to do. The online quests are pretty fun however the main issue i take is that other gamers can "hack" into your game and annoy you, i'm playing the campaign and suddenly i'm told a "hacker" is nearby and taking my game data i therefore have a few minutes to track him down in the designated area and stop him before he succeeds. To help you the designated area the hacker is in shrinks the closer he gets to successfully stealing your data making it somewhat easier to find him, this doesnt always work and there has been many a time when i've actually got so angry at having to deal with this damn nuisance that i opened fire on everyone in the street as i figured that the law of averages would mean i would get to the hacker eventually...it doesnt always work other than to make your reputation take a serious nose dive. The characters you meet are a mixed bunch, some creepy, some hilarious and all just a little crazy in their own way but they each help make the story feel just that little bit more alive and if that helps you to get drawn into the game then so much the better.

Overall Watch Dogs is a very good game that will have you enthralled for hours on end, yes there are one of two things that could have been better but i definitely recommend this to anyone...especially to those who are not GTA obsessed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Eye candy with quality, 14 Aug. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
well for starters this was pure bliss for the eyes, then again it was primarily designed to show the world just what the PS4 was capable of but that doesnt mean it was all show and no substance. The story was a little average and the voice acting could have been better, but frankly the gameplay was superb. The campaign is a good length and there are more than a few challenges that await the player, plus its one of those games that you can enjoy playing over and over. I'm no fan of multiplayer, however from what i've seen so far i cant say i'm disappointed.

Overall it's not 5* perfect but its definitely worth buying

A fantastic book, i cannot recommend this highly enough. it contains everything you need regarding this area of the law and sets it out clearly and concisely. It has great analytical detail and if there is something that it does not contain, it more than provides you with direction as to where to find what you seek. Definitely a book worth buying
