5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely essential reading, 30 Dec 2008
This review is from: Heavy Weather Sailing (Hardcover)
It scares me that I ever went to sea without having read and re-read this book. If you're serious about going to sea then you need to know the techniques and skills in this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent guide, 17 Dec 2008
I am not in the military, but do an awful lot of physical activity in the mountains and hills of the UK and Europe. This is a really useful day by day guide to getting mountain fit. But you still have to do the work yourself!

1.0 out of 5 stars Absolute nonsence, 4 Feb 2004
Very American and absolute nonsence. If you look at the American reviews, they love it. Look at the English reviews, and they ridicule it. For good reason. Its only meaningful advice is be presentable, and don't wimp out when you get nervous, just go and chat to girls. All the rest is absolute garbage. Try entering his name on google and read what he gets up to.... If you are looking for good advice in this area you should read 'Flirt Coach' which is a really excellent book to help you get back on track with not just girls but life in general.

The Road to Serfdom (Routledge Classics)
The Road to Serfdom (Routledge Classics)

5.0 out of 5 stars The most important book you will read, 4 Feb 2004
Written in 1944, in clear, modern English, this book must be one of the all time classics. In a forensic but highly readable analysis, Hayek explains that social justice is the goal of all systems, Socialism, Liberalism etc, and that they are just different approaches as to how to achieve it. He then shows how Socialism despite its very good intentions inevitably leads to the opposite of its goal. Liberalism is seen as the only genuine method to achieve true social justice. It is one of the most rigorous deconstructions of political thought I have ever read and is worthy of a law court, yet remains hugely readable.

Walking the French Alps: G.R.5 (Cicerone Mountain Walking)
Walking the French Alps: G.R.5 (Cicerone Mountain Walking)

4.0 out of 5 stars A very useful guide, 19 Oct 2003
I set off from Lake Geneva in July 2003 to walk the length of the GR5 to Nice. The guide is very useful, albeit it takes a little getting used to, and this means a few wrong turns and wrong plans at first. The pace Collins sets is fast, make no mistake, especially on climbs. He also does not factor in rest periods, meals etc. He does have a tendency to over state how wonderful a particular section may be. Words such as 'sensational' and 'extraordinary' sometimes rasie expectations too high! But a very good guide that I would have hated to be without when high up & alone in the mountains!
