5.0 out of 5 stars Not just for the golfing enthusiast, 19 Oct 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a selection of the writing of the former Times golf correspondent, neatly divided into the months of the year in which they were written, each month being prefaced by an introduction by the author. You don't have to be a golfing enthusiast or particularly knowledgeable about golf to enjoy this collection. Much of it is, naturally, about the personalities of golf but the emphasis is on their human traits rather than their play. All in all, a thoroughly entertaining read.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not a travel book, 1 Oct 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is more a recent history of Colombia of an anecdotal kind than a travel book. There is vey little description of the wonderful sights of Colombia or any sense of the friendliness and hospitality of the Colombian people. The book is not helped by the failure to include an adequate map. That provided does not even make it clear which parts of the country the author visited. Overall not recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating and readable history, 19 April 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Do not be put off by those who have treated this serious and readable history of late antiquity as an attack on Islam. It is far from that and much more. It describes the decline of the Roman and Persian Empires and the ascent of the Arab Islamic domination of the Middle East, North Africa and southern Europe in a period of little more than 100 years. It shows how the three great monotheistic religions, including Islam, evolved over the same period of time. The book is a highly entertaining and informative account of the time and place.

3.0 out of 5 stars No Gobekli Tepe?, 19 Feb 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I became interested in Eastern Turkey after reading an account of her visit to Gobekli Tepe and Urfa by the Turkish-American author Elif Batuman in the New Yorker. I bought this book in order to find out more about the region and, in particular, Gobekli Tepe. I was therefore astonished and disappointed to find no mention in the book of this immensely important site, the discovery of which has turned the world of archaeology upside down.
