3.0 out of 5 stars Clever & Claustrophobic, 5 Jun 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Fire cracker prose makes this book a compulsive read. The adrenalin ride of professional gambling is beautifully captured and you live every bet at the baccarat tables with 'Lord Doyle'. Little in the way of plot, and characterisation a little weak, but overall a compelling book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good book but unsatisfying ending, 17 Mar 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Beautifully written,as always, by William Boyd - well plotted with great characters. Let down, for me, by a lacklustre ending.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good, not great, 15 Feb 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Typically tight and we'll written, though not one of Tyler's best. I found the pace a little slow and Aaron, the principal character, unsympathetic. The frustrations, joys and regrets of marriage are cleverly (of course) presented.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great watch naff strap, 10 Aug 2009
This watch is great value for money. Big, clear display with back light if needed. Easy to set and adjust. Date and time at a glance. Shame about the velcro strap though as the velcro at the end of the strap rapidly wears. This means that the end of the strap doesn't sit flush with the rest of it - it sticks up and looks untidy/catches on things. If it weren't for the strap this would be 5 stars.

Nice looking case that does exactly what it's supposed to do. Easy to open and close and provides a good level of protection for the camera.

The Crossing (Border Trilogy) (paperback)
The Crossing (Border Trilogy) (paperback)
by Cormac McCarthy

4.0 out of 5 stars Great writing, 21 May 2009
This is a bleak but wonderfully written piece of work that draws you into the trials and travels of Billy Parnham. It is a worthy companion to 'All the Pretty Horses' as part of McCarthy's Border Trilogy. If it has faults they are firstly too much navel gazing philosophy from some of the characters encountered by Parnham, and secondly too much use of Spanish dialogue, a potential source of frustration for non-Spanish speakers.

4.0 out of 5 stars Why the poor strap?, 21 May 2009
This a great watch for the money - easy to read and very easy to set up with a good backlight. But the velcro strap is rubbish as the velcro at the very end rapidly wears and leaves the end of the strap flapping in the wind. A plastic strap would make this a 5* purchase.

5.0 out of 5 stars Astounding Versatility, 16 Mar 2009
This review is from: Love Tattoo (Audio CD)
This is a wonderful album, astounding in its versatility and all the more praiseworthy given that it is almost entirely self-penned. Imelda May puts in a superbly polished performance, easily moving from upbeat, throbbing numbers to slow, sensitive and thoughtful songs. It's also a sensual performance with Imelda's throaty voice attacking and caressing the vocals in turns. A final mention for her musicians who are all highly talented and supportive in what is, for me, one of the best albums I've heard in a long time.
