4.0 out of 5 stars it's best read with Spotify to hand, 6 Feb. 2015

A lively, personal, highly divergent exploration of Winterreise and, especially, the world out of which it arose. You never quite know where the discussion of a song will go - part of the book's fascination but occasionally a source of frustration, with too much detail on a minor idea. It's a book that repeatedly sends you off to explore intriguing avenues for yourself - in art, history, literature, philiosophy, as well as music. Bostridge offers many insights into interpreting and performing the work: it's best read with Spotify to hand, allowing immediate access to Bostridge's own reading and those of numerous other interpretations - including the weird version with a hurdygurdy accompaniment!

Virgile's Vineyard: A Year in the Languedoc Wine Country

3.0 out of 5 stars Basic vin de pays, 25 April 2014

I found this mildly diverting, mainly because it deals with places and wines with which I'm familiar - I've been buying the wines of the eponymous Virgile for several years. The book runs amiably through a range of cliches and awkwardly stitched in background that would probably leave most readers less than fully engaged.
