Hymns for Prayer and Praise (Hymnal)
Hymns for Prayer and Praise (Hymnal)
by J. Harper
Edition: Hardcover

5.0 out of 5 stars 1996 1st Edition of Hymns for Prayer and Praise - hardback, 31 Oct 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A beautiful copy, clearly printed. Plainchant hymns are printed separately from standard notation ones, which is helpful for the less or non- musically literate. The price was fair and it was delivered promptly. The sellers were extremely helpful when I enquired about which edition it was. Again, the year of edition had not been advertised by the seller although it is important to do so in this case because the 2012 edition is different from the 1996 one (including the hymn numbering, and omission of some of the 1996 hymns). Later, they advertised it again showing the date. I cannot commend these sellers enough, they were so helpful and kind The hymn book, like the 2012 edition, is used extensively in communities, and in some churches and groups. It greatly enriches worship and links the worshippers with tradition and the wider Church.

The Franciscan charism in the church
The Franciscan charism in the church
by Anselm W Romb
Edition: Hardcover

5.0 out of 5 stars The Franciscan Charism in the Church, 31 Oct 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a superb analysis of what the Franciscan Charism is and how it is lived among Roman Catholic Franciscans in 1969. It is completely relevant to 2013 and to Anglican Franciscans. It is clearly written and encourages all that is best in St. Francis' way of life. It has a broader view of the three Orders, and rightly classes the Third Order as Religious, as St. Francis stipulated. My copy was used and so opened rather loosely but none of the pages were unbound and the covers were in good condition. I am extremely pleased with this very fairly priced book and its delivery. It is invaluable as a reference book for Franciscans.

Hymns for Prayer and Praise: Full Music (Hymns for Prayer & Praise)
Hymns for Prayer and Praise: Full Music (Hymns for Prayer & Praise)
by John Harper
Edition: Hardcover

5.0 out of 5 stars The 2012 revised edition of Hymns for Prayer and Praise - full music hardback, 31 Oct 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This revised edition of the 1996 1st edition contains many of the hymns from the first edition, although not all, sadly. However, it contains many new hymns which enrich worship in our religious communities, churches, and groups. It is clearly printed, although running the plainchant stemless notes between the standard notation is not so easy for the less musical to follow. Obviously, to have printed the two notations separately would have thickened the book, and so made it heavier to hold and harder to keep on the music board, but on the whole, it could have been kinder to the less musically literate. It is important to consider the many members of the general public and religious who are not musically literate, or less so, in order to make worship in communities, churches and groups more inclusive. This is the only failing of the very fine book, and it is surmountable as long as the stemless notes are pointed out by a leader before the book is used, and followed strongly by those who are musically literate. The sellers of the book were extremely helpful, offering to receive the book back if I needed to return it and purchase the 1996 edition instead. In the end, I kept the 2012 edition, having thought I was ordering the 1996. In this case, it is important to put edition dates on the advertised copies. I would definitely buy books from the sellers again. They are very kind and understanding.

Celebrating Night Prayer: From "Celebrating Common Prayer" (Society of St Francis)
Celebrating Night Prayer: From "Celebrating Common Prayer" (Society of St Francis)
by Society of Saint Francis
Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars Celebrating Night Prayer With Music from the Society of St. Francis, 27 Aug 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This treasure of plainchanted Night Prayer (Compline) is clear and easy to read and follow. The pointing is easy to understand and fits the plainchant which is in 5-line stave stemless notes with key signatures, apart from the ancient Salve Regina at the end, and even the block plainchant for that is easy to follow. Finding one's way through the book is easy and well mapped and the music is beautiful, unitive and focussing. It is not just for 'Religious' but for everybody who wants to sing Compline, whether alone or in groups, in Religious Houses, churches, at home, in schools, or a small meeting room. It's a small booklet and should be inexpensively priced. It was written by Brotehr Reginald Box, of the Anglican Society of St. Francis and it has been used with joy for a couple of decades.

5.0 out of 5 stars Indiana Jones, from the Ark to the Holy Grail., 25 July 2013

This review is from: Indiana Jones Trilogy [DVD] (DVD)
The Indiana Jones films are a rich mixture of action, humour, inventiveness, and some very serious philosophy, all bound together by the superb Indie and his friends and enemies. The films range from American college archaeology lecture rooms, to deserts and the insides of ancient pyramid-like temples, to the bowels of Indian mountains, South American jungles, and Germany in the 3rd Reich. The characters are fascinating, but Harrison Ford as Indie, most of all. After watching the first film,'Raiders of the Lost Ark' with John Williams' catchy theme and exciting atmospheric music for mystical scenes, one cannot wait to see the next one, 'Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.' This is about a nasty Indian society of kidnapping thugs who use child labour to keep their secret, murderous rituals going inside a mountain and who capture the heroine and prepare to toast her. The classic Saturday Matinee cliffhangers run right through it, with Indie fighting grossly evil genius in impossible situations. Again, humour relieves the tension and there are issues to be considered philosophically, though they're different from the ones in 'Raiders.' Third in the trilogy is 'Indiana Jones and the Search for the Holy Grail.' which is marvellous. We get some of Indie's own history featuring Sean Connery as his remarkable dad. Train roof duels, ancient writings and very funny escapes of father and son provide huge entertainment as well as some poignant scenes. The Nazis are after the means of ruling the world again in an unholy search for the Holy Grail, also being pursued by Indie and his dad. The philosophy is even deeper than that of 'Raiders' and there are some very fine illustrations of the nature of faith and trust, as well as remarkable insight. it is easy to go back to Raiders and watch all three straight through again after finishing 'The Search for the Holy Grail.' Add on 'Indiana Jones and The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull' with its allusions to the other three, and even greater humour as Indie faces an atomic blast and the Russians attempting to take over America, plus a surprise and you have exciting adventure film-watching for years to come.

Spiritual Formation: Following the Movements of the Spirit
Spiritual Formation: Following the Movements of the Spirit

3.0 out of 5 stars Nouwen presented with the aid of friends, 14 Jun 2013

I've never liked Nouwen much. His concern with himself, usually rather sad concern, gets up my nose, as does his 'self-help' and ratehr patronising attitude towards 'groups,' and contrived style of writing. (I did enjoy parts of his book, 'The Prodigal Son, 'some years ago.) 'Spiritual Formation' was recommended for a purpose so I bought it. Very expensive for the few pages and half a dozen art reproductions. The front cover is pretty. The book concerns spiritual formation for individuals and groups. I found a few insightful passages but most of what he wrote, or was reported as writing was well-known, basic stuff like Lectio Divina, which has been practised in the Anglican and Roman Catholic church for centuries. So has 'the way of the heart' and honest prayer. Neville Ward's book on Prayer is far deeper and more radical and very much more honest. I wouldn't recommend Nouwen's Spiritual formation, except for people who are absolute beginners in the Christian faith, and who want to discuss things in groups, and even then, I'd prefer Ward's 'Prayer.'

Call the midwife: A True Story Of the East End in the 1950s
Call the midwife: A True Story Of the East End in the 1950s

I received this as a gift, then bought one to give to someone else.
The price was very reasonable. Both books in perfect condition and the one I bought was very promptly sent.
The true stories and writing style were absolutely gripping, extremely moving, very funny sometimes, and despite the nuns on the back cover, not really religious. One got a sense of the period and place and a feeling for the excitement and fulfilling nature of midwifery . One also got a sense of the grim circumstances faced by all concerned in East End London Dockland in the 1950s when the workhouse was still a fact of life, and living conditions absolutely shocking. Despite the moans and groans of the present economic situation in Britain, life is so much better all round now, even for the poor of our time..... just. I highly recommend this book to everyone, male and female alike. It's not just a 'women's book.'

This is a useful, well-written book but the copy I received seems to have been a photocopy, which is why I gave it only 4 stars. I was expecting an ordinary printed copy.
It came within the delivery period and in good condition.

4.0 out of 5 stars Solo, by Stanford Whitmore, 1 Feb 2013

This review is from: SOLO (Hardcover)
I was disappointed because the book arrived without a cover and was quite brown inside, but other than that, it was in good condition.
The book itself is gripping and affords several readings. It's story is like a thriller. It's about an uncompromisingly individualistic young Chicago jazz pianist who is a genius without pride or ambition, other than to earn a living and retire. His extreme individualism evokes negative reactions and his seeming simplicity makes him a target for exploitation. Without intending to, he has huge effects on another virtuoso jazz pianist, and on the lives of a record shop proprietor, some concert promoters, a girl, and jazz club owners. The philosophy in this book is deep and as relevant and important today as it was when it was written. It is a deeply moving book, and for me, a very valuable one in terms of how it influenced my life as a late teenager in the 1960s. I thoroughly recommend it, though I hope other copies come with the cover on.
