5.0 out of 5 stars A great film. Ignore the 1 star philistines., 15 Jan. 2015
This review is from: Locke [DVD] (DVD)
All the one star reviews for this film are a travesty. It just goes to show that something comes along that doesn't fit the mould, that dares to do something a little differently and people just can't handle it. Tom Hardy was brilliant, totally convincing and as far as I could hear his Welsh accent was fine. Hope he and the film win awards.

5.0 out of 5 stars You can't hear it on the radio/you can't hear it everywhere you go!, 5 Dec. 2014
Whilst fans may quibble with the track listing as they are wont to when a real albums band releases a best off (certainly not a greatest hits) no one, and certainly not me whose been listening since the release of Being There, can deny that all these tracks are (late) greats. This collection contains a good balance of the upbeat (Monday, Hummingbird, Wilco (the song) and the darker and more contemplative side of Wilco's music (Im trying to break your heat, Handshake Drugs, Misunderstood. The last a peak amongst peaks! The number of picks from each album: 4 from AM, 6 from Being There, Summer Teeth, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot and A Ghost Is Born respectively and 3 each from their last two releases (plus a few from the Bragg/Guthrie project) reflects the general critical consensus that Wilco had a mid-career run of classics (their second through fifth albums) and have since moved on to a respectable but less mercurial latter day period.

A band who arose from the ashes of the quintessential alt-country band Uncle Tupelo - for whom Jeff Tweedy represented the more personal, soulful and musically adventurous ying to Jay Farrar's more political, traditional yang -Tweedy has led his band through incarnations of rootsy rock on Being There, spry pop on Summer Teeth, each album increasingly experimental in nature culminating in the cause celebre (for reasons not entirely musical) Yankee Hotel Foxtrot and the Jim O'Rourke assisted and personal favourite, A Ghost Is Born. (Missed cuts from that album the coruscating Muzzle of Bees and compulsively weird Company In My Back). Axe man extraordinaire Nels Cline joined for 2007's Sky Blue Sky which saw a return to a more traditional sound. (There's no 15 minute track simulating a migraine for starters!) WIlco (The Album) is one album with two songs that definitely should have been included: the hyper-intense murder narrative Bull Black Nova and the beautiful, classic song writing of Country Disappeared. But hey I'm quibbling just like I said I would! Personally I would buy everything, at least from Being There through A Ghost Is Born which you could do for not much more than the price of this comp but for a neat package of a great American band this is a great collection.

2.0 out of 5 stars No Kim or Lee. And no surprises., 9 Nov. 2014
This review is from: The Best Day (Audio CD)
Am I alone in never having really GOT Sonic Youth?
Despite thinking I should.
Despite loving many of the bands they blazed a trail for, Dinosaur Jr. ,Pavement, BtS, YLT, Royal Trux, Tortoise etc.
They have a handful of songs that are pretty cool: Becuz, Teenage Riot, Total Trash, Rain On Tin but apart from Washing Machine I can't think of one album I KNOW all the way through let alone LIKE all the way through.
This Thurston Moore album is v. mid noughties SY in style and just sounds stale. I heard it being raved over on 6music's Round table. Poor Kate Tempest had clearly never heard of Moore and despite not wanting to sound ignorant of such an out-rock godhead was clearly fairly unmoved. You don't have to like anything just cos you're supposed to.

3.0 out of 5 stars useful but not beautiful. stylus ghastly., 4 Aug. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
For the money a decent case. Real leather or smells like it, with heavy not particularly attractive white stitching round the edges. The screen protector I screwed up the application of which and has through away. The stylus is utterly cheap and tacky and barely works. For four quid the case alone is fine but you may feel prepared to spend a bit more money for something slightly more refined.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not so good second outing for DC Griffiths, 2 July 2013
I struggled to finish this having really enjoyed Talking to the Dead. In short it just lacked the freshness of the first book and without the revelations about Fiona the case being investigated needed to be really captivating and for me it just wasn't. The author seemed to want to recapture the weirdness of key Fiona scenes from the first book but having her lamely 'sense' Khalifi is no substitue for the mortury scene from TTtD. Some good moments such as the lunch with Watkins (although the several instances of casual homophobia leading up to it, 'lezzer suits' ? didn't further endear Fiona to me) and the meeting between Lev and Buzz only highlighted how little seemed to be happening for pages and pages. Similarly, the incongrous action movie denoument. Clearly the author is pacing himself and a good story that delves properly into FG's backstory mustn't come too soon but this wasn't the one to have in the meantime.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great phones, great company, 12 Jun. 2013
Bought these last year and about 15 months later they went in one ear. To be honest I've never had a pair of ear or headphones last more than two years before going in this way. My AKG's bought in 2011 have just done this. Luckily RHA give the product a three year warranty and they have a really excellent customer care policy. Just look at how they respond to the one star reviews here for proof. So, a couple of emails later and I've a new pair. The replacable ear buds are tougher (and also tougher to get on but hopefully this makes it harder for them to accidentaly come off). The L and R are clearer and the jack is now L-shaped so hopefully also tougher. Soundwise they're excellent, easily the match of CX300s or some much more expensive Shure phones. What else...? I really like the fabric cable! In sum excellent product from an excellent company.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent collection, 15 Mar. 2013
This review is from: The Turing Test (Kindle Edition)
Having just finished Chris's excellent novel dark Eden I was keen to read more. This collection contains some excellent stuff. I especially liked the stories concerned with a virtual reality London. I also really liked the fact that Several of the stories were linked. Am very much looking forward to reading Chris's next collection and will probably make time to read most of his stuff.

For 49p this is worth it just for Ted klein's excellent Poroth Farm which doubles as a reading list of weird writers! Am eagerly looking forward to the rest of the collection but the bars been set high with that one.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent if slightly confusing boxset, 14 Jan. 2013
This review is from: The Smiths Complete (Audio CD)
Five stars for the music obviously. My only gripe is the replica sleeves leave the lyrics impossible to read without a magnifying glass. Putting one in the box would have been a nice touch! Also 'World won't listen'contains just 1 track that isn't anywhere else in the set as far as I can tell. Not everyone is aware of the smiths convoluted release history so a word as to why this is would have been appreciated.

5.0 out of 5 stars I need to buy this again !, 30 May 2012
This review is from: Bad Brains (Audio CD)
A classic "lent and lost" CD for me this. Wanting a wider sense of their music I bought Banned in Dc: Bad Brains Greatest Riffs as a replacement which is great BUT the version of "Sailing On" isn't quite as good (ie. powerful). Incredible band, insane musicians. Roughly an 80/20 split between NY hardcore punk assault (but with chops to spare) punctuated by sublime dub/reggae.
