His miniature reverence flounders through the day his principles snagging on the passing procession of self-interested humanity. The humour fades rather against the sad reality of life in the capital. And there are lessons. It's my favourite sitcom. But don't watch if religion bothers you. It is fun for grown ups.

What carries me away is Ted Hughes' conjuring of a godscape that has not the slightest relevance to contemporary existance. A work of the imagination endowed with a life that we cannot know except through a narrative created by a poet. The economy of his línes is startling. They are neither verse nor prose but their clarity makes this work sing. We are in a world of wild sensuality overwhelmed by passions so far removed from our planet that we seem to be astride a comet laughing out loud at global warming, polítical correctness and contemporary relevance. I enjoyed the ride.

This is new and exciting stuff. It draws together work by Strogatz and others who have contributed parts of the narrative that is now so ably set out in this text. The capacity of network models to explain apparently disordered behaviour in populations so various is vastly stimulating. It's better than fine dining and sex.

Bill Davison was an original, an impossible character totally impervious to doubt or criticism, but judged on his performances an electrifying cornetist.

England plunged from the Miracle/Morality plays into Shakespeare's theatre within a decade or two. The two genres are poles apart and yet there is a similarity lurking below the surface that says something about the English character. I think that whatever it is, it is still saying it. To regard this as "primitive" theatre is a mistake.

5.0 out of 5 stars A good buy and useful kit, 18 Jan 2014

I bought the bike to strengthen a knee weakened by arthritis and a torn cartilage. Progress is slow because I am 80 but there has been a marked improvement even now. I am completely satisfied by its performance, it has worked perfectly from day one and it was easy to assemble. It arrived when the supplier said it would, properly packed and undamaged. Anyone else buying it should pay attention to the security pin that holds the two jointed struts in position. It must be inserted into the appropriate hole or the thing will collapse accompanied by much grieving. I am 6 feet tall and 92kilos so the taller customers should be content with it.

Offenbach is regarded as a composer of comic opera, Orpheus and so on. The Tales of Hoffman is sometimes put in the same box but it should be taken out wiped and put to sit beside The Magic Flute; sopranos get their moments in the spotlight in both works and the element of fun is prominent. Offenbach's talent for composing a strong melody made him a famous. His talent for producing lively shows made him rich. These are not the the qualities most admired in a creative artist nowadays. So enjoy a superior example of the pleasure of humming the tunes long after you put the DVD back in its box. It will remind you of more expansive times when you didn't wear jeans to the ball and "accessible" meant you could get through the door of the carriage without creasing your crinoline.

Focussing our attention on just one tragic figure was a stroke of genius. Butterfly is an impossible figment but there's the hook. The real people who surround her appear dangerously self absorbed. Butterfly stands alone the essence of real tragedy. The music is fabulous and seductive, the performances superb. If you don't want to be carried away, try something else, Wozzek perhaps.

I bought this to write with: emails, letters and word processing generally. WiFi seemed to be a luxury one time now it's essential. If this is what you want it's perfect. Later versions of Windows than XP are pointless unless you play games and photograph everyone in sight. It arrived when they said it would, in perfect condition ready to go.

Good Evening Everybody [DVD] [2010]
Good Evening Everybody [DVD] [2010]
Dvd ~ Louis Armstrong

5.0 out of 5 stars My hero, 4 July 2013

Armstrong was one of a very few jazz men to be born in abject poverty, I mean no shoes. His progress from coalman to one of the primary influences on popular music in the 20th century is legendary. This is his last birthday celebration. It radiates goodwill, a rare virtue though a professional quality in his performances. The respect shown by his fellow musicians is genuine, the audience is enthralled and the music is straight from the hearts of extraordinary musicians who were his friends. Who is doing that these days?
