4.0 out of 5 stars Readable but..., 11 Dec. 2012
This review is from: Chasing Venus (Kindle Edition)
Diana Dempsy writes page turning books. I thought this one was well written but for one flaw - there are so few characters mentioned beyond the pricipals it is obvious early on who has committed the murders.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not a masterpiece, but well worth reading., 10 Oct. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I enjoyed this book. There was a fair amount of detail put in to recreating the depression era and it was done well and not too gratuitously. Occasionally the dialogue was a little wooden, and the characters overly predictable. The plot ticked along nicely - I cared about the characters, but there wasn't much suspense (even when it was intended.) To be honest it might have been better if the "plot twists" had been left out, as a whole it was more the style of one of those epic books in which not much happens, but you feel like you were there and enjoy getting to know the characters (eg. John Grisham) - as it was the "dramatic moments" felt a little surplus to requirement and generally contrived (eg. anything to do with Victor "the bad guy".)
I got it when it was free, which I always worry makes my review a little biased - this book isn't a work of genius, but it is worth reading, and depending on the price I'll certainly consider getting the sequel when it comes out.

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting premise, poor execution., 1 Oct. 2012

It is hard to rate this book because the idea behind it, and the historical setting is interesting and well done. Unfortunately the fictional characters who are supposed to carry the story through, are two dimensional and wooden. The plot is painfully lacking in subtlety, and not only the characters thoughts are spelled out, but frequently the psychological reasoning behind them.
The editing is reasonable, apart from a rather irritating typo that means the main characters name is "tony" rather than "Tony" throughout.
I'm not quite sure who this book would appeal to - part technical manual, part poorly written historical fiction - I got it when it was free and don't regret the couple of hours it took to read; if I had paid for it I think I would feel differently.

Tea Time in Turkey

4.0 out of 5 stars history lite., 20 Aug. 2012
I was pleasantly surprised by this book. Despite it's chatty style it was well thought out and well researched. The history parts were just the right length to give you a good overview without becoming bored. I found the personal stories interesting but slightly less credible as they were sometimes presented in a way that led to sweeping generalisations about the whole country - a thing which the author himself later comments is very hard to do as Turkey is such a diverse place. There are occasional switches in tense which ruined the flow a little bit -especially when they happened mid paragraph - but not so many it became irritating. If you have any interest in turkey and in particular the Ottomans, this is worth reading.

A Tight Wide-open Space: Finding love in a Muslim land
Price: £2.23

3.0 out of 5 stars well written, interesting, far too short., 19 Aug. 2012
This book is a mix of travelers tale, cultural reflections, and love story. All those elements are well written and well thought out, all of them are far too short - to the point where this book feels more like a prelude for something bigger rather than an actual life narrative capturing 6 years in Turkey.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good but with reservations..., 25 July 2012

The best thing about this book is having a collection of stories that span the ages and concentrate on Britain. The country has such a long history it is hard to find anything aimed at kids which covers a long space of time. When we read this we often have things to discuss afterwards and I particularly appreciate the fact boxes at the end which give a little bit more history.
However there are a few negatives. The selection of stories could certainly be better, there is also a christian bias - is the founding of the international bible league really of key importance to Britain's history??
It is also most definately a book you would read to your child, not one they would pick up for themselves. My son is seven and I find the vocabulary a little advanced for him, often simply because old fashioned words are used rather than more modern ones - it breaks the flow of the story to have to explain things too much.
Overall I think it is worth buying, unless you know of a better alternative - in which case please leave a comment underneath this review so I can buy it too!

I bought these for my son who very much enjoys setting up battle scenes and has been reading about the US civil war. The soldiers are mono-coloured and finely detailed. They certainly wouldn't stand up to any rough play, but they are really not designed as that sort of toy. The main difficulty with them is that they are fixed onto two sheets off plastic. You have to twist the soldiers to free them. The connections are far too thick to do this. I had to heat up a knife and cut through the plastic holds to release them. It might be possible to do the same with scissors but I think you might risk a few soldiers limbs in doing so. The whole process took around half an hour to complete.

The cover fits my kindle fine. It looks a little cheap and nasty - mainly because the colour is much brighter than pictured, but for the price I think I got a very reasonable deal (less than £2 at the time of purchase)

These Mario figurines are made from solid plastic and most have small circular black plastic bases to help them stand up. The figures themselves seem reasonably durable, although on day two the "key" on the bomb snapped off, however the bases are very flimsy. The black stand is NOT included (incase you are in anyway confused by the picture.) My son likes them a lot because he is an avid Mario fan, in my opinion they are overpriced for what they are, especially when you include the £6+ postage.
