5.0 out of 5 stars Still very powerful, 7 April 2007
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
If you leave aside the very cheap and tacky trailer used to introduce the episodes there is very little to criticise here. I wanted to rewatch the series after having been moved by it as a kid. Let me tell you: Roots has lost none of its power. I even felt tears trickling down my cheeks at the end. Couldn't help but feel ashamed about how black people were treated. As you'd expect the blacks are the heroes of the piece, the whites the villains. But it's not presented in quite as simplistic a formula as that. You see some whites reaching out a hand of friendship. Some blacks are portrayed as implicated in the rounding up of the slaves in the first place. The heroic characters are well rounded. Each has his/her faults. Although slavery was abolished 200 years ago it is still practised in parts of the world. Lessons can be learnt from a programme which is about maintaining one's dignity in the face of dreadful trials. A first class series which everyone should watch.

2.0 out of 5 stars Put the humour back in Bond, 7 April 2007
On the plus side I thought Daniel Craig was very good in the role and Eva Green was simply gorgeous. Now the negatives. Bond films have never been known for their strong plots but they used to have humour in them. This is a film almost entirely devoid of it. In older Bond films the violence was really just comic strip stuff- here it's deadly serious. With torture scenes and particularly violent fights, this is one of the most aggressive films you'll see in mainstream cinema. Some obviously like that. Doesn't appeal to me.

1.0 out of 5 stars The worst film ever?, 1 July 2005
This review is from: Spider-Man 2 [DVD] [2004] (DVD)
Boring from start to finish. Excellent special effetcs but that doesn't make up for the absence of an interesting plot. The film-makers took their subject matter far too seriously. This was a film which desperately needed some humour... but apart from the dreadful joke of the person playing the Spiderman tune on the violin there was none. Shockingly bad.

5.0 out of 5 stars Realistic and depressing, 30 Jun. 2005

This review is from: Salaam Bombay [DVD] (DVD)
This is very far from a feel good film- in fact it's downright depressing. But then not everything in life is rosy. The film presents a struggle through poverty. The 10 year old hero discovers that sometimes when you're down on your luck everything seems to conspire against you. It's not a particularly uplifting message but it comes across as realistic. The acting is excellent. The story doesn't always seem to be leading anywhere but then I guess that in itself is a statement on life in the ghetto. Certainly worth watching.

I fully endorse what the previous reviewer has said. Don't believe the way the film is hyped on the box. It is actually a much more subtle and beautiful film than the crass blurb would suggest. Personally I would have done the end of the film slightly differently but that is only a minor criticism of a film which is first class and well worth watching.

2.0 out of 5 stars Over-rated, 30 Jun. 2005

I must confess to being a bit disappointed by this film after all the hype. Yes it touches on many of the difficulties faced by immigrant communities and in this sense is worthy. However, most of the charcters are one-dimensional and excessively stereotypical. The leading charcter seems to have so few flaws in his character that he is totally unbelievable. The 'baddy' is so one-dimensional that he also loses all credibility. And don't even get me started on the way the immigrant officials are portrayed. I really think the film-makers should have done some research on how these people operate because it is certainly not like this. The plot of the film is formulaic and highly predictable. There are many films out there which treat this questions in a much more subtle and interesting way.

I really don't see how anyone could not like this film. That would be like not considering Bob Marley wonderful. If you like Cult Classics such as Pulp Fiction, Trainspotting, La Haine, Amores Perros then you'll love this. In fact I think I'd have to say it's better than any of the aforementioned. An absolutely wonderful film.
