5.0 out of 5 stars Not so Young'uns now, but they still rank alongside the best, 19 Jun. 2015

Another fabulous album from the three lads, who in all fairness aren't so young anymore, but, again they show how tight harmonies can work, Highlights for me are Tenting Tonight, The Streets of Lahore, Billy Bragg's Between The Wars and Private Hughes, but, in fairness, there isn't a bad track on the album, and, as they have shown on past work, they are really good at what they do. A must for anyone's collection and no mistake.

5.0 out of 5 stars Definitely Not The Curate's Egg!, 9 April 2015

Compared to her other albums, this is a lot more experimental, in fact, so much so when first hearing it I wrongly compared it to The Curate's Egg, good in places. This opinion has changed quite dramatically after a few listens, and, I now beg each and every one of you to give this album a try, it is truly wonderful...

5.0 out of 5 stars Thought Provoking Norma, 5 April 2015

This review is from: The Very Thought Of You (Audio CD)
This is a remarkable album. Very thought provoking as it deals with real life situations and Norma's fantasies. Songs ranging from the premature death of Al Bowlly to the confrontation of Josef Locke and Fairport Convention in a pub in Covent Garden and the declaration by Freddie Mercury that he was HIV Positive. And then there is the wonderful Fallen Leaves, a song written by Eliza Carthy which tells us of Men's views of what constitutes beauty in Women. This is a must for any record collection...

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, 6 Sept. 2014

It is the story of a violin, it is half narration, half music, it is very poignant, it is bittersweet, it is thought provoking, it is brilliant...

5.0 out of 5 stars A Capella at it finest, 17 Jun. 2014

Four well established stars with an excitement that stems from brilliant harmony singing and fresh bright instrumentals. They show a great affinity for the music, and clearly enjoy performing together. Only very rare talents can draw both the largest and smallest audiences into an intimacy like this. The album combines both accompanied and a Capella songs … using both new and traditional songs perfectly...

5.0 out of 5 stars Revenge Of The Folksinger, 9 Mar. 2014

What a voice, what diction, one day, hopefully, all music will sound like this.

Olivia Chaney was born in Florence, but grew up in Oxford and has obviously been classically trained. The instrumentation is sparse, but the voice more than makes up for this. The one fault being there are only five tracks on this, but, don't let that put you off, it is superb.

She has appeared with many folk artists, including Seth Lakeman and Alasdair Roberts, but is certainly equal to performing on her own. There is supposed to be a debut album coming out this year (2104), and we are already looking forward to it.

If you have already heard King's Horses on 'Revenge Of The Folksingers' you will know what to expect, if not, please, give yourself a treat and buy a copy of this for your collection, you will not regret it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Their best in years, 10 Nov. 2013

It does not matter if you are a fan of Terry Pratchett or not, this is a very good album, but the fact of Terry's involvement may make it more accessible to people who wouldn't necessarily have bought it, so, that is a good thing. But, it really is a fabulous album. It harks back to earlier albums with an energy that hasn't been heard for since Bloody Men, and the two new players Julian Littman and Peter Zorn have fitted in very well. It is also nice that Peter Knight plays a large part in this album, something that hasn't been heard for a while. Maddy Prior seems to get better and better, as does Rick Kemp and Liam Genocky is still a fabulous drummer. The addition of John Spiers and Kathryn Tickell on Melodeon and Northumbrian Pipes really works. What more can I say, go out and buy this album, I promise you will not be disappointed.

What a voice Linda Thompson still has, and with fabulous songs, a stellar cast of Musicians (including Richard, Teddy and Kami Thompson) and her own consumate skill, she has turned out another wonderful album, and there isn't one standout track, they are all great, and her back to basics approach is just sublime. Linda has been missed, but, with this recording she has again proved that her albums are definitely worth waiting for. Do buy the album, you will not regret it...

5.0 out of 5 stars Typical Eric Bogle, 30 May 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: A Toss Of The Coin (Audio CD)
Eric is one of the best singer/songwriters of the last twenty or thirty years, and on A Toss Of The Coin he gives us seven new songs, with two songs from John Munro, which John expertly sings as well, along with a fabulous version of In Flanders Fields. This album is a must for Eric Bogle fans, and, if you are not a fan, probably a decent place to start. There is nothing on this album to match No Man's Land or The Band Played Waltzing Matilda, but, after saying that, there is not a bad track on here either.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous Folk, 30 May 2013

With a haunting voice and sparse accompaniment, Fay Hield tackles these songs with gusto, and, it is a joy to listen to. King Henry, Mad Family and The Looking Glass are the stand-out tracks at the moment to me, but, with more plays that may change, not that I will stop loving said tracks, but, in all honesty there isn't a bad track on the album, so, favourites will come and go, it really is that sort of album.
