This review is from: You Can't Do That (Paperback)
This is an excellent book suitable for virtually any age of child. The story is well written with a moral not conspicuously obvious, and the illustrations are equally good, and complement the story perfectly. I imagine it will be a popular choice with the vast majority of children, and adults may well enjoy the humour carefully included, in particular the newspaper illustration! Thoroughly recommended, and I trust this will be the first of many more.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, but . . . . . . ., 22 May 2014

This is a very good performance indeed, but I think it falls behind the Bayrische version conducted by Carlos Kleiber. This version is certainly let down by Eberhard Wachter, who was obviously too old at the time of the recording. But the wonderful Brigitte Fassbaender is in both sets, and is better in the Kleiber version. There are parts in this Vienna version which are superior to the Bayrische version, but on balance, I consider Kleiber's version to be the more enjoyable.

4.0 out of 5 stars Stands well among formidable competition., 22 May 2014

I would place the Bruch among the great recordings, but the Dvorak, to my mind, falls slightly behind the excellent performance by the much underrated Akiko Suwanai. I don't know if this is still available, and if not then I would say this disc is the best available, and also it is a very sensible coupling.

5.0 out of 5 stars Truly excellent, 22 May 2014

This is a DVD of an evening one would love to have been at personally. Julia Fischer is a remarkable artist: to perform, in the same concert, Saint Saens 3rd Violin Concerto and the Grieg piano concerto is incredible. Both are extremely well performed. The lond interview with Julia Fischer is also very interesting, and cannot be considered purely as a convenient fill-up. Highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars An enjoyable experience, 22 May 2014

On the whole, this is a very good performance. I think Eberhard Wachter could be replaced with advantage. but this makes for a very pleasant evening's entertainment, with very good music. It could be considered, I think, second only to The Merry Widow.

This served it's purpose, but there are better Quentin Blake cards. I would have given it three and a half, if this had been available.

5.0 out of 5 stars The one to have!, 9 Mar 2014

I have heard several recordings of this song cycle, but this is by far the best I have heard. Fischer-Dieskau was at the height of his considerable abilities when he recorded this, and a great deal of the credit for the overall excellence must go to the perfect piano accompaniment by Gerald Moore

Trial and Error (Arcturus Crime Classics)

Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars a wonderful read, 9 Mar 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is one of the most ingeniously plotted mystery novels I have ever read. I have read several of Anthony Berkeley's novels, but this is definitely the one I have enjoyed the most. Strongly recommended, and I also enjoyed the other two Ambrose Chitterwick novels, The Piccadilly Murder and The Poisoned Chocolates Case. There is nothing in modern detective fiction to equal these, or even come close!

Lucia Di Lammermoor: Libretto
Lucia Di Lammermoor: Libretto
by Gaetano Donizetti
Edition: Paperback
Price: £2.91

2.0 out of 5 stars Not brilliant, 30 Jan 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This libretto is something of a disappointment, for various reasons:
a. It is incomplete
b. the translation is poor
c. the format is badly designed; instead of the two columns on each page being Italian/English, the two columns are Italian, with the English translation on the opposite page.
Cannot recommend.

The Poisoned Chocolates Case

4.0 out of 5 stars Ingenious, 30 Jan 2014

This is a somewhat unusual and intriguing mystery novel, in that six different, and seemingly plausible, solutions are provided. The final solution is at least guessable, as the suspects become somewhat decreased as one goes along, but nevertheless it's a very worthwhile read.
