The Social Media Bible: Tactics, Tools, and Strategies for Business Success
The Social Media Bible: Tactics, Tools, and Strategies for Business Success
by Lon Safko
Edition: Paperback
Price: £16.58

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, mostly for beginners, 20 Nov 2013
I am very clued up with social media and I was looking for a good book that was discussing mostly social media strategy. From this point of view the book is OK, but not great. However, the author explains that he tried to fulfil several aims, and strategy was only one of them. If you are totally new to social media this book is truly great as it goes through the main ones, how to use them, why, how and everything you need to know as a beginner. I like the use of the QR and the links to a comprehensive website. The book does not cover some of the new entries like Pinterest and Instagram in detail, but this world is evolving so quickly that it is nearly impossible to stay on top of it in between editions.

Overall a great book if you are a newbie, a very good book if you are already knowledgeable in this field and a good book if you are very knowledgeable and want more ideas on strategy. Overall, well worth the price. The author's website offers bonus content.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great if you are interested in skincare, 20 Nov 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I like skincare and I wanted to learn more about what it is good and what is just hyped marketing rubbish. This book is written by a dermatologist (not a random self professed YT "guru" or aesthetician) with proper qualifications and experience. Of course she mentions her products (well, it is a marketing tool for her after all!) but she also mentions suitable products offered by the competitors at all price points.

The part on the diet is very similar to the Clean & Lean system by James Duigan. What I really enjoyed is the explanation of the lies cosmetic companies tell us to sell overpriced stuff, the phases that help achieving a great skin (no promises of miracles here), a list of ingredients that are good and where to find them and an how to do an analysis + possible solutions (the magic pot does not exist). Very easy to read, not patronising (unlike Paula's Choice). A must have if you do not want to be ripped off when purchasing products and if you want to buy stuff that work (it tells you what to look for an what it does for your skin).

5.0 out of 5 stars Great value, 20 Nov 2013

This is really great value for money. I was struggling to find quality Epsom salts in a reasonable quantity and here I found the solution. 4 kilos would last me a long time. The bucket has got a lid that allows to close it tightly so no product gets exposed to air or humidity. I found it funny that it is aimed at horses (the label made me laugh a lot!!). If you are not bothered with the product being originally aimed at horses and are interested in a good priced and quality product go ahead and purchase this! Delivered very quickly and well packaged.

4.0 out of 5 stars Well researched but sad character, 8 Nov 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The book is very well researched by the author. The first chapter is quite slow as it starts by referring to the different versions of her life that Chanel provided to people. Chanel was born in a poor family, the father disappearing after her mother gave birth to her sister and to her. When the mother died Gabrielle was just 11 and it is likely that she and her siblings were left in the house with the dead body for a few days whilst her father was missing. The father returned and quickly dropped Gabrielle and the sisters to an orphanage. These events will accompany Chanel for her entire life, leading her to have nightmares also during the latest days of her life. Times at the orphanage were grim, with no love and sense of abandonment. Chanel admitted that she thought about committing suicide. She left the orphanage at 18 and moved with the grandparents. Life was not a happy ride. She left her grandparents house and went to live with a playboy with whom she was having an affair: she had no money, women did not have rights of any kind at the time and she became the lover of this man. She met the love of her life, Boy and moved in with him. She did not find happiness though: he was unfaithful and more interested in expanding the family business and marry into the aristocracy.

The story of Gabrielle Chanel is surrounded by drama, affairs, betrayal. She was a great business woman, who was well ahead of her times. At the same time she looked ruthless, with the dark shadow of abandonment that followed her continuously.

Chanel was making up stories to cover up her unhappyness and sadness, she spoke about growing up with aunts (instead of nuns in the orphanage) and twisted events. She manipulated people and was manipulated by them. She became a living legend but has never accomplished the most important thing that was to find peace. Extremely sad story of a truly remarkable woman. I do not like her, even if I sympathise with her personal drama and the choices that she made considering the odds were against her for being a woman and wanting to be independent. I particularly loathe the choices she made in murky times when she tried to use the anti semitic laws to get her hands on the perfume business that she co-owned with the Bourjois owners and the cynicism of cutting out completely her family that was in need (she became a multimillionaire thanks to her business and perfume royalties) show how unpleasant she was as an individual - true she had a hard childhood but money clearly cannot buy happiness. She died alone in Paris, surrounded by servants and her jewels but no real love.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good but not great, 5 Nov 2013
I was interested in this collection dedicated to the most important designers in history. Leaving aside the debatable choice to cover Ralph Lauren instead of the real big designers such as Giorgio Armani, YSL or Prada, I like they dedicated a book to Balenciaga - a brand that is usually neglected. The book is OK, pretty basic. I like the quality of the pictures but it is a little bit thin in terms of overall quality of the book. Ok, it is just over £10 so I cannot expect miracles but I would have expected more meaty content. It is like reading an article in a magazine splattered over +100 pages with some images here and there. I will have to try another book in this series to see if it is just an unfortunate result or if it is the constant element in this collection.

I buy the Filofax refills via Amazon every year. I really like the cotton cream version, it looks very luxurious and it is easier on the eyes than the traditional white. Super quick delivery, competitive price.

1.0 out of 5 stars Boring, 1 Nov 2013
I like SJP, but this movie is really boring. She plays the part of a mum that is divided between career and family. It shows the usual cliche of a woman that is dull and messy and struggles to do things right. She gets the possibility to pitch a proposal to an important client and she starts travelling to NYC from Boston. This creates tensions in the family and the husband plays grumpy. Whilst it is clear that women are discriminated in the workplace, especially when they have children, the part that I found annoying is that SJP's character is a cliche' of a woman that goes through lists all day long, that is trying to do it all and that has to compromise at all costs. Really boring movie, predictable and not funny. I really did not enjoy it. Luckily I did not purchase the DVD as it would have been a waste of money.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent for dry and sensitive skins, 30 Oct 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I have read great reviews about this product on specialised magazines. dermatologists in the US swear by this product. Unfortunately in Europe it is not readily available. Luckily Amazon resolved the issue!! The liquid is very mild, a sort of "thick" gel that does not foam. It is scent free and leaves my skin clean and happy. It contains ceramides and hyaluronic acid, it is fragrance free. Remarkable formula and much cheaper than high end brands on the high street. I like the pump dispenser and the 355ml last about 4 to 5 months with daily use, twice a day (a little goes a long way).

I wish that it will become available in Europe as the seller is atrocious (unfortunately this does not come via amazon itself). It took three weeks to be delivered, the seller did not reply to emails and the delivery costs are very high. Overall the product is great, but the seller is not. Up to you if you want to use the seller as the product is very good. In the US they pay about $10 for what we pay nearly £20 + 3 weeks for delivery!

5.0 out of 5 stars Love this product!, 29 Oct 2013
This is the first retinol that I use. And it does work. Do not expect miracles though. It helps exfoliating the skin and even if it contains 1,5% retinol it is not too harsh. I have not had any issues with flaking, irritation or redness. My skin is more radiant, the skin tone more even and overall I am happy with it. I use four drops for my face and neck. The product is very liquid and comes with a dropper. I put 4 drops in the palm of my hand and I apply it bit by bit on my face and then on my neck. It is scent free.

This is NOT retin-A (which is only a prescription product). It is better than SkinCeuticals Retexturing Activator and cheaper. I started using it every odd day and after my skin showed no sign of irritation I started using it every night. Due to the exfoliation effect you have to use a sunscreen everyday during the day (at least SPF30). This product should be used between October to April/May, when the light/sun is not too intense (well, depending on where you live in the UK).

This author clearly knows what she is talking about. In this book she offers pragmatic advice on how to look for work in a savvy way . She starts with the important element of determining who you are and what you really want. However, this is not one of those lala land books that say you can achieve anything. It shows you how to create plan A but also plan B in case things do not work out as wished. Covers CVs, cover letters, how to approach the market in the traditional and non traditional way, how to answer tricky questions. One of the best books on the topic. Also her book on how to write CVs is excellent.
