5.0 out of 5 stars A classic text, 19 Dec. 2008
This book is an entertaining, educational, and practical text that, surprisingly, is suitable for developers and DBAs of all levels. Like that other great book Optimizing Oracle Performance there is a theme about using a methodical approach. However, this book contains lots more technical information and is bang up-to-date with information on all recent releases of Oracle including 11gR1. I bought it in hardback and am very happy with my purchase.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not a very good book, 19 Dec. 2008
I bought this book because at the time it was the only book on the market that covered the CBO. It is not only misleading but factually incorrect in parts. Don't waste your money. If you want a real book on the CBO then you could do worse than look at Cost-Based Oracle Fundamentals: v. 1 (Expert's Voice in Oracle). However, be warned that this linked book is an advanced text despite the title.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fundaments for the Advanced, 19 May 2007
The title of this book may lead some to believe this is a book for beginners. Think again! This is the most advanced and detailed Oracle book I have read. At points I thought that much of the material was unlikely to be of use in real life. However, within a couple of months of reading the book I was able to diagnose and resolve at least two problems that had completely stumped my predecessors. Diagnosing and resolving these problems required an understanding of material found exclusively in this book. As long as you are prepared to invest plenty of time in reading (and rereading) this book your understanding of this most important Oracle component will be transformed.
