4.0 out of 5 stars Good insight to the modern music business, 8 Dec 2013

For a first attempt, this is a very good short novel, giving an insight to the wheeler-dealings of the modern music scene. The story charts the rise of Charlie. A young aspiring footballer and musician, Charlie is fascinated at an early age by pop music, specifically 70's pop music. After becoming entranced by the BBC programme top of the pops 2, he is bought a fender stratocaster copy and a marshall amp. From there on in he knows which way his life has to go.........

5.0 out of 5 stars an unusual, but really enjoyable read., 4 Oct 2013

Think of a hybrid of Harry Potter, Dr Who and Sherlock Holmes. Hard isnt it? Read this book and you will see. The author writes scripts for doctor who, but it is his knowledge and love of London is what really impresses me. The book is a fantastical journey through the streets and areas of London. Witchcraft, legend, black magic. All appear in this great story. It starts with our hero P.C Peter Grant meeting with a ghost and escalates into a mad crazy adventure with great characters. Cant read wait to read the next novel in the series.

I'd never heard or heard of this guy until I saw the movie. That opened my ears as well as my eyes. Great music from a great songwriter and performer. I'll say no more. Buy, listen and make your own mind up. I recommend the movie as well. I was enthralled by it as I had no idea how the story would turn out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bowie.....what more is there to say., 5 Aug 2013

Being a teenager and living in England was a strange experience at times. The world seemed to dip into black and white at times. 3 day weeks, powercuts, my dad losing his job as the London docks were closed, The miners strikes and worse of all Thatcher getting into power at the end of the decade. The one thing that brought joy and colour into our lives was the music. The undisputed king - or queen me dad might have said! - was David Bowie. with this album he hit a peak where he remained until the 80's really. I love this album. As soon as you listen to the first track, 5 years, you are hooked. Its a fantastic ride and the great guitar riffs of Mick Ronson help things along gloriously. The music dips and sways between the emotional , 5 years, rock and roll suicide. To the joyful starman, soul love and moonage daydream. Give it a go people. Listen to a man who is right up there with the beatles and the stones as being a legend of British popular music.

Very much a jazz influenced album. Although I much prefer some of the dans other albums - countdown to ecstacy, royal scam, pretsel logic - this album still sounds good and original years after it was released.

Quite ponderous, but quite amusing in how foreigners see the British - mainly the Welsh - from their perspective. However its not really a funny read. Its moves quite slowly, but you cant put it down until you find out exactly where the tale is going.

5.0 out of 5 stars Real soul music, 25 July 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is real soul! Not that syrupy over produced motown stuff! I actually like motown too, but if had to make a choice between Otis and Marvin, Otis would win hands down. Sam and Dave versus the four tops? Do me a favour! Diana Ross versus Gladys Staples, get a life! No contest! Anway, if you love old time soul how it used to be this is the album for you.
