Jennifer Anniston is at her usual rom-com best. The story moves along at a moderate pace, with attractive visuals and few wisecracks, coupled with some funny moments. But the extreme predictability of the story, coupled with the surprising lack of action despite the presence of the hunky Gerard Butler, drag the film down. My thoughts about the film has been summed up in the title of this review itself. Therefore, you have to make up your mind now.

4.0 out of 5 stars Satisfying, but...., 13 Dec. 2013

Compared to many other viewers and critics, who had panned this movie as "Bourne-lite", I had found the film to be quite satisfactory and clean in its capturing of the breathless pace of action (often marred by the two experimental jerky camera-movements in the original trilogy). The protagonist is also more humane compared to the perpetually beleaguered Jason Bourne. The only reason why I shed a star was the rather too open ending of the film that shouted: "sequel coming"! Otherwise, a decent and enjoyable action-movie without any pretensions and a lot of actual bang. Recommended.

Tom Cruise films contain a certain amount of glamour that transcends the story (or lack thereof) or context in every film. Perhaps it has something to do with our fascination with a basic fact that he doesn't seem to age! Never mind, let me come back to the story. One of the better science-fiction movies of recent past, this film is sumptuous in terms of visual delights. The scenes look hauntingly beautiful, the music is unobtrusive-yet-'always there', and the action-sequences are terrific. The ending seemed a bit forced, as if the happy ending had been introduced just to ensure that Cruise lovers can live the hall happily, but otherwise it was a very good movie. The DVD is strangely bereft of any special features whatsoever, and I felt bad, But otherwise, recommended.

One of the most stylish, beautiful, elegant, restrained, romantic, brutal and haunting films that I have seen. Period. Phew, now that I have managed to get all that out, I can get down to business. But that would simply mean going through the same gushing words & emotions again & again. So, let me keep it short & straight. Watch this film. Watch it for our nameless hero, watch it for every other actor & actress, watch it for its camerawork, and listen to its music. I can't praise this movie enough, and you have to see it. Highly Recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Retro delights!, 14 Nov. 2013

Science Fiction is a dangerous genre. It either relies on tropes & themes that are constantly endangered by the passage of time making them obsolete. Or, it relies on human emotions that should be timeless, but are perceived by different generations in different manner. This film, despite its over-ambitious technological dystopic visions, emphasis on exotica, melodramatic and wooden acting from the protagonists as-well-as antagonists, manages to maintain a fine balance in its handling of the subject and the story. It is assisted by a truly haunting score, and magnificent images of the city of the future, interspersed by the grime, crime, and slime of everyday living. It is obvious to understand why a "Star Wars"-boosted audience might reject this film. It is also obvious to understand why the film would attract the lovers of slow-burning theme-heavy films, with its numerous small-yet-memorable touches littered across scenes, dialogues, flashes, and atmosphere. Brilliant film, and this version does it some justice.

2.0 out of 5 stars Oh Dear!, 10 Nov. 2013

It never ceases to amaze me that irrespective of the money and big-names being invested by Hollywood in "its" adaptation of R.E. Howard's work (Conan, Kane, Sonja, we can go on), they always, ALWAYS miss the basic point: Howard's stories are legendary in their impact and continue to be loved by readers even after almost 80 years since he had committed suicide because they had something that went far-far beyond the usual tropes of pulps. Howard's works throb with a pulsating feel of life flowing with all its wonders, terrors, blood, pain and JOY. Conan has been depicted in his works not just one step above some killer ape (which is the case in this film), but as an adventurer who has a grim sense of humour, whose barbarian sense of right & wrong also hosted a fierce sense of equality & tolerance for the deviant, and who took the sword as his companion only because it enabled a straight path to survival. Film after film overlooks all these, and rely on the muscles, the sword dripping with blood, and (obviously) scantily clad women irrespective of the locale or situation. Howard's stories were NEVER this cheap, and yet Hollywood belittles & denigrates him and his characters through these portrayals. The 80-s film Conan the Barbarian [1981] [DVD], despite its protagonist being just a hulk, had managed to add several nice touches (the protagonist was damn scary, the cannibalistic orgy scenes were sensuous & disturbing, and Bergman was wonderful as Valeria). This film is a travesty in all those sense. The only sex scene in this film was so contrived and looked so out-of-context that for a while I had thought that the film-makers might have gone for CGI for its depiction as well. It's a tragedy that a top-notch actor like Ron Perlman wasn't used for longer duration, which might have provided the film with a little depth. And once they had gone for Rachel Nichols, they should have either glammed up the film suitably with her body-parts, or should have compelled her to "act" actually. Not Recommended.

We, the fans & invisible followers of Batman, have been rather sharply divided over Grant Morrison's "take" on Batman. In a post-modern and non-linear, yet highly literate storyline, he has drawn a picture starting from the point where Paul Dini had left the family of the demon intertwined with Batman. But where, and how will this mind-bogglingly complex picture end? The saga continues in this volume and its collected stories, depicting colourful protagonists & antagonists, interspersed with grimly relentless violence set us up for the big finale. Watch out for the next volumes. And I should also add: this is one GORGEOUS volume befitting the stories. Highly Recommended.

3.0 out of 5 stars Just OK!, 5 Nov. 2013

This film could have been a truly hilarious and smart one, with sharp wisecracks, comic situations, and substantial amount of eye-candy. Unfortunately, all it manages to be is just another attempted spoof film (trying to make fun of fantasy, esp. the sword & sorcery genre) full of homosexual innuendos, gags involving crotch, penis, posterior, and other sundry items. The only redeeming aspect of this film is Natalie Portman. She makes those scenes worthy of viewing (one scene showing her physique in rather liberal dosage is DEFINITELY worth repeat-viewing) which bear her presence. The rest is rather abysmally juvenile. If you like your humour to be of Meet The Spartans [DVD] [2008] variety, you might enjoy this one. On the other hand, if you enjoy Shaun of the Dead [DVD] [2004], then this film is definitely NOT your cup of tea.

The description of the film, as available everywhere, doesn't tell you how grim, ultra-violent, pessimistic and demoralising the story of this film is. Yes, it has a panache & style that can make anybody think that they are in the middle of a classically irreverent fantasy (the way genres and models are handled in this film can stun as well as earn expletives). But, when the truth (or its semblance, as imagined by our principal protagonist) intrudes in the interludes, we are brought down crashing. Prior to watching this film, I actually used to think that the moniker "Dark Fantasy" is oxymoronic, but now I comprehend its scale or depth. Watch art your own risk, esp. now that the nights are becoming longer & colder.

I am not sure if Isaac Asimov would have warmed to this film, and I can sympathise with Asimov-fans who felt betrayed with the typical paranoia and OCD-fuelled plot of the film. However, all said & done, this film is visually arresting, quite suspenseful at stages, good in terms of acting-performances, and top-notch in terms of action & pace. The film also throws up quite a few intriguing questions that one has to mull over. Overall, I would highly recommend this film to any lover of intelligent-yet-fast science-fiction movies.
