3.0 out of 5 stars Temporary effect, 27 April 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I gave this rating because the effect is temporary. Immediately after using, my teeth looked much whiter and initially I was really impressed. This effect was unfortunately gone within about half an hour. Also, the whitening wasn't even, I had certain flecks on specific teeth. I used for about 2 weeks and then got bored due to no noticeable difference. It might be good for a special night out or interview, but hardly worth the money or hassle. I wouldn't use again.

I bought a couple of cheaper cables and they were both faulty - shame this isn't a couple of quid cheaper, but at least it works properly!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great!, 9 April 2014

Works like a dream once the dogs learn not to walk underneath each other. Peeing on each others' heads is also an occasional occurrence but if smart they learn to avoid it (one of mine has, one hasn't...)! Still, so much better than using 2 leads!

2.0 out of 5 stars This text book is too old for 2014!!, 9 April 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
So I bought this book (April 2014) as it seemed to be one of the latest books available for Cocos 2D - despite the fact it was published in 2011! Anyway, it is far too old, the code refers to Cocos 2D v. 0.9 - we are now on version 3.0, and there are MANY differences. The fact that this book uses manual reference counting shows how dated it is. There is little point in buying this book as a good proportion of the info is out of date and you will spend 75% of your time trying to convert what the book says to do into modern Cocos 2D.

Notably, the CCActions classes have changed a bit, there are no more CCLayers, the physics has changed drastically since the book was released (it spends 2 chapters on Box2D which has now been dropped from Cocos2D entirely), and the fact that ARC is not used in the book means all the code needs further tweaking! All of this together means it's probably best not to use this book.
The parts that ARE still useful - general game design, basic AI, and possibly GameCenter implementation (I didn't bother trying it, it may have changed drastically too!). It *is* a well written book that covers a lot of ground, but is more likely to hinder than to help in many areas.

Instead I recommend doing some online tutorials as there seem to be very few text books on Cocos 2D, and none on V3 which is relatively recent at the time of writing, and quite different to previous versions in some key areas. Actually it is all quite simple with V3 - especially if you use SpriteBuilder, which can do half of the work for you!

5.0 out of 5 stars It does actually work, 3 April 2014

My dog will not let me brush his teeth. This stuff has kept his teeth looking great and I never brush them, make sure to give him a bone or dry food (or something hard to chew on) as this softens up the plaque meaning it will easily come off when the dog is chewing on something - it still requires checking to actually remove the plaque though! Also, don't expect it to work overnight - give it a couple of months!

2.0 out of 5 stars Didn't do much, 3 April 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Gave a slight improvement to signal, but nothing much, and probably only because of the cable length allowing me to put the adapter 1/2 a meter closer to router. If you're computer's wifi receiver is rubbish than this may be a good investment, but if it already has a decent one then don't expect this to make a great deal of difference. Also, it although it worked OK with my PC, it doesn't work with my Mac - no driver available.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great device, works really well, 3 April 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I love this device - 3 USB 3.0 ports and a 10/100/1000 Gigabit ethernet port all from 1 USB 3.0 socket. Perfect for Macbook Air users. Shame it is a little expensive, but I guess if you can afford a MacBook air, what's another £30 ha. Good build quality, solid cable (if a little inflexible, I'd rather that than flimsy), OK spacing between the USB sockets (you may struggle to use all of the ports if plugging something really fat into one of them). Works well. No driver installation required on Mac (I'd assume the same on Windows!).

Solid, comfortable, just works, scroll wheel is quite loud, but not a huge problem! I'd recommend it rather than the uber-cheap options as it is a bit nicer to use!

5.0 out of 5 stars A well written book, 3 April 2014

This review is from: IOS Games by Tutorials (Paperback)
Really well written, as you would expect from these guys. The bonus chapters available for free online are a nice extension - giving a crash course in texture design, texture atlases, and performance tips and tricks - although they were clearly supposed to be in the book from the beginning as they are referenced from the printed chapters (oops!).
Still, doesn't bother me, SpriteKit is a really powerful and intuitive set of APIs and making games really is very simple with it. Shame it currently can't be ported to Android....ha.

The ease of doing basic stuff in SpriteKit means you very quickly get onto doing stuff like particle effects and physics - so you can really make a flashy game!

It shows you how to do various more advanced things like working with Airplay and getting games displayed on your TV. Shame you need all the kit to actually see if it works, but still - nice to have the info! Note that if you get more than a few chapters in, you might want to get the Apple developer license (and an iPhone!) so that you can run the apps on a real device - but it is not essential unless you're doing the AirPlay stuff as you can use the emulator for all the games made in this book.

My one gripe with this book is that all the games you make are for iPhone only - they could have shown you how to manage resources etc when making a universal game for iPhone and iPad (i know a lot of it is automatic, but even more reason why they could have made all of these examples for both platforms). It's a small gripe - I'd guess that there are free tutorials for it on the author's website (raywenderlich.com)

Now I wish this team would do a more up to date text book on Cocos2D for a multi-platform framework...

The Book of GIMP: A Complete Guide to Nearly Everything
The Book of GIMP: A Complete Guide to Nearly Everything
by Olivier Lecarme

3.0 out of 5 stars A thorough book, but could be written... differently, 3 April 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This covers (as it says in the title) nearly everything Gimp has to offer. However, for me, the examples are not very well written. The structure of the book is to run through tutorials that show you how to do various things. This usually involves multiple steps, using numerous different tools. However, the tools that you use are frequently left unexplained as to what they actually do - you're just told to 'apply this filter' or 'set this value to x' without any explanation of what that achieves (& it is not that obvious from Gimp's awful naming of tools!). I also found that you sometimes are asked to do steps that have not been covered yet - I don't mind flicking about the book a bit, but most text books these days guide you through a little better.
All in all, it does contain a lot of great info, but you are too often left in the dark about what you are actually doing with a certain step, and need to flick around the book too much.
It would be more useful if it was EITHER a pure reference book (i.e. i want to know what this tool does- so look it up in the index and read about it) OR a cover-to-cover tutorial style book where you work through doing various examples in order to gain a good understanding of how to do common tasks. This book is trying to be both and is a little muddled as a result. Still, as I say, it does contain most of the info you'll need to use the VAST depths of Gimp's functionality.
