5.0 out of 5 stars Great Recording, but ..., 14 Jan. 2011
Wonderful performance, but for God's sake don't buy it (or many other Naxos CDs - and many other labels come to that) from Amazon, as you can get it at the correct price ([...]) from EVERYWHERE else. [...] for a Naxos disk is criminal. I joined Amazon Prime last year where postage is supposedly free; clearly it isn't ... I'm paying through ridiculous prices. It's a great service Amazon offer, but they're starting to take the 'Mick'.

1.0 out of 5 stars Overrated, 13 Dec. 2010
This review is from: La Voce (Audio CD)
His voice is 'okay', but there are DOZENS of much, much better tenors out there. I'm afraid Russell Watson's success is just the result of a very good marketing department. This CD is very ordinary.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Refreshing Approach, 23 Mar. 2010
This review is from: Mahler - Symphony No 2 (Audio CD)
I have to disagree strongly with Mr Fortune, who gives a rather scathing review and a measly one star. Okay, Norrington is not going to replace Klemperer or Rattle, but at least he's doing something different. So often nowadays Mahler 2 performances are incredibly bland; in fact, today's orchestras remind me of international five-star hotels, once you're inside of one you could be anywhere in the world. And so it is with orchestras from Berlin to Dallas and conductors from Haitink to Gergiev ... technically brilliant ... but sometimes kind of dull. Norrington, by choosing a different approach, allows the listener to hear things afresh. I only wish others would follow his lead.

2.0 out of 5 stars Second Rate Mahler, 23 Mar. 2010
This review is from: Mahler: Symphony No.2 (Audio CD)
A rather bland interpretation of a wonderful work. It never really takes off - I have seen Kaplan live on two occasions performing Mahler 2, and each time I've felt bitterly disappointed. This disc has the same affect on me.

1.0 out of 5 stars Lots of Hype, No Substance, 23 Mar. 2010
Awful, just awful. Very weak voice. Of course, he's not an opera singer (as he's marketed), has never appeared in an opera, and is nowhere near good enough to appear in an opera. Another case of the marketing people fooling a public who, by and large, know no better. Very sad. Glad he's got over his illness though; no-one deserves that.

1.0 out of 5 stars Awful is too weak a word, 18 Feb. 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
If you're shocked by this film, as one reviewer suggests, you must have led a very, very sheltered life. Aside from that small point, there is no story and the actors are amateurs (bad ones at that). It is very possibly the worst film I have ever seen ... absolutely dire. And, if that wasn't enough, there are two young lads in it who even Save the Children wouldn't want to save. TERRIBLE!

1.0 out of 5 stars Atheism as religion, 28 Sept. 2009
Wooly thinking, very flawed arguments. In fact, he comes across as a fundamentalist ... a religious fanatic in as much as his religion is atheism. I have no ask to grind (I'm an open-minded sceptic), but this is nonsense. Atheism really has turned into a religion - it's become a belief structure with no proof just like Christianity, Islam etc.

3.0 out of 5 stars The Whole is Better than the Individual Parts, 21 Aug. 2009
This review is from: Monday Morning [2002] [DVD] (DVD)
A fascinating film, although not a lot of dialogue ... or plotline. Yet it achieves what it set out to do; shining a light on the 'hamster wheel' of everyday life. To me, It doesn't so much feel as if I've watched a film with a beginning, middle and end; more like stared at a really good painting. It's slow, the characters aren't great, but somehow it's worth seeing.

1.0 out of 5 stars Pretty but Weak, 17 July 2009
The reviewer who said that 'he's right up there with his musical mentors: Shostakovich, Mahler and Rachmaninov,' was obviously drunk, sniffing something he shouldn't, or was Tony Banks' mum in disguise! For only a mother could love this!! This is 'pretty' music, but has very little depth and, even amongst 21st century composers (forget Mahler etc.), this is still third tier stuff. Shame really; he's a great song writer ... but not in this idiom.

1.0 out of 5 stars Awful!, 14 July 2009
This is just terrible! Ms Jenkins is NOT an opera singer, has never appeared in an opera, and never will. If you want decent singing buy a CD or DVD featuring just about any other soprano ... it's got to be better than this.
