Easy to install this pole. Very good quality for the price although you may need to order extra curtain rings. Using dome WD-40 on the pole helped the curtains rings glide more smoothly. WD-40 also cleans and protects brushed metal surfaces. Very pleased with this curtain pole.

5.0 out of 5 stars Small, versatile, light weight, high quality feel and results., 21 Sept. 2015

I have owned my 1s for just over a week and have used it on a trip to France. Having downsized (again) from a Panasonic G6 with two lenses, I was preparing myself for greater convenience at the expense of a drop in quality. In short, I am astounded by the quality of this Olympus and its bigger than compact size chip.

First the lens. 28mm-300mm f2.8 constant is perfect for just about all situations and the fast 2.8 at 300mm is excellent for portraits with just enough background blur. The ring around the lens can be used to override auto setting to give you f2.8 when you need it. The built-in ND filter is hugely useful to open up the lens and create less depth of field. The zoom is smooth to operate and can be set at fast or slow. The built in lens cap is a nice convenience feature.

The view through the EVF is excellent and every bit as large and sharp as my old G6. The huge rear LCD is sharp and contrasty and it is treated with an anti-fingerprint coating making cleaning unnecessary. I thought I might miss my old G6's swivelling LCD screen but have not missed it all as the Olympus rear screen pivots out far enough for overhead shots or, more importantly, low level shots when you do not feel like crawling on the floor or wet ground.

Menus are easy to navigate and I found myself right at home with no need to play the CD for the 980 page instruction manual! There is quick menu access from the FN2 button. You can adjust exposure + or - with the right side top dial (all these adjustment facilities can be re-assigned but I do not bother). This is an important feature if you need to override the auto exposure positions for back lit subjects or shooting through a tunnel and want the exposure for the centre part of the shot. There is also a spot-meter feature if you want it.

The left hand dial allows access to all kinds of creative setting which are easy to navigate and there is an information button to give you further explanation as to what the feature does.

Battery life seems to be very good. With my G6 the battery seemed to go after a few dozen shots and a bit of playing around. The Olympus 1s goes for a few days and reminds me of my old Canon 450d which seemed to go on and on without needing a recharge. I have decided no need to buy a spare battery.

Another positive for me is the touch sensitive rear screen. It is limited to a few features such as the ability to move the focus point but the features it does cover are important ones for me.

The build quality is excellent. It feels high quality and matches its performance. Much better feel than the somewhat plastic G6 although I would recommend one of these for someone who needs interchangeable lenses as it makes an excellent downsize from a bulky and heavy DSLR. The stainless steel buttons on the back feel substantial and the dials all click in place nicely. This is not a shirt pocket camera but if you have a coat it will fit inside most pockets. If you do don't want to be weighed down or have a stiff neck from dangling an DSLR all day long, this is the way to go.

Results are stunning. Loads of contrast and accurate colours. Even on a large laptop screen there is no noticeable softening in the corners or edges. There is a X2 feature that extends the lens out to 600mm but at the cost of halving the pixels. Still not bad though if you need that kind of reach. For me, 300mm is enough for most telephoto requirements. If there is a negative it is the 28mm at the wide end. I would like to have 24mm although have become used to shooting 28mm as my G6 lens was similarly restricted at the wide end. 28mm is wide enough for most situations and too wide can begin to look unnatural. Olympus make an expensive adaptor lens to take it to 22.5mm but at almost £160 no thanks.

I have taken a few shots inside darkened Cathedrals and they are no problem for the Olympus. Auto-ISO cranks up but the results are still good with acceptable levels of graininess.

HD Movies are excellent too. No HD4 but who cares? I don't as it will be a few years before 4 is cheap enough to buy and the amount of memory taken by this system is massive. Overkill IMO.

I am extremely pleased with this little camera and if you are looking for a single unit to cover almost everything and do not want a tiny chip you find in nearly all lesser bridge cameras, the 1s is a very good choice indeed. I considered a do-it-all bridge like the Panasonic FZ1000 and the Sony RX10 but these are both monsters compared with the Olympus, twice the price and you gain very little except wider at the wide end but right in the middle at the tele end (the Sony RX10 reaches to 200mm and the Panny to 400mm). The Panasonic FZ200 was not considered due to its tiny chip and the view through the EVF is too tunnel-like.

If you want small, versatile, high quality feel and results and want to spend well under £400 this Olympus is the best there is, IMHO, of course.

My wife and I have been using this product for just over a week and notice that our teeth are considerably whiter. The taste is good and when rinsing you are not left with a fake tasting aftertaste. The SLS scare in the press caused me to check this product out and I am pleased that I took the plunge.
